I have noticed. when me and my skier friends get going all the girls are like "wow u guys are like girls."
  im sure not all skiers are like this, but its kinda scary how consumer-minded this sport can be, eh?

ha ha i think its funny when i were my dads paint stained, insulated coveralls and i stop at the top of an in-run next to a bunch of jersey kids who chuckle and sneer at me in their spyder coats, pants gloves and thongs. then i'm all like oh its backflip time and their all like oh time to text message and look the other way time

No, that's just scenesters. Real down to earth freeskiers aren't so anal about their ebonic fashion and focus more on skiing.

Pollard, Zakrisson, Poole (R.I.P), Pep, Benchetler, Mahre, Barnhill, Davison...those are just a few off the top of my head. There are thousands others. I know a kid named Josh Randisch and he's what I would define as a down-to-earth skier. He has never heard of afterbang, Wallisch, or JOSS, and he doesn't go around wearing the latest fashion trends. Basically he's not a scenester and just skis because it's fun (not that scenesters don't think it's fun either).

oh god, don't get me started on all the guitarists who use the guitars that look "cool" instead of one that sounds good. Their "cool" guitars are usually pretty ugly anyways (directed towards most but not all metal bands). And have the strap so loose that the guitar is by their knees.

its so true. except the difference is (atleast with my friends) is that we buy all our shit used or at a really good deal. I along with my ski friends get all our ski stuff almost exclusively used on ns or on steepandcheap.


its kinda funny though because none of us actually give a shit about our clothes outside of skiing when when it comes to skiing its a whole nother story

I dont think its an intentional thing i think that everyone on this websight is obsessed with the sport like myself.  So when the off season comes and or we are not on the mtn we cant stop thinking about skiing or somthing about it.  Checking out new gear and shit is just one way to cope with not actually being skiing.

It really is true. I don't thing of myself as materialistic really, but for some reason, I need to have the best gear possible (that I can afford) when it comes to skiing.

I think all skiers are like this, and anyone who "isn't" is doing so in a way to be "unstylish" in a way on purpose.

The "gapers" in the starter jackets and jeans are the only ones really out there who don't give a rats ass about the clothes they are wearing on the hill. They are just out having fun sliding around.

i'll admit that i'm fairly fashion oriented, and i think it's fairly obvious that it is due to my golfing background. i've grown up golfing, and looking nice on the golf course is just a part of the game (if you don't dress properly you usually won't be allowed to play). this awareness of my attire has certainly leaked into every other aspect of my life. i don't go around dressing like a golfer all the time, and i certainly don't dress like jon on the hill (thought i can't say i would mind it). i'll buy the gear that i NEED every now and then (nice pair of snow pants, maybe a nice jacket). but besides that i just scrounge together whatever I can find. not sure where i've gone with this, but yea i can definitely say that clothing is a fairly large part of my life, even if i do dress like a hobo sometimes haha

style is what makes everyone different, realize that its you that makes the decision on what you wear, its more of the fact if your style matches up with who your are and how you ski, and what you like to ski. some people are more eccentric than others and have just been born that way. just be true to your self and accept yourself for who you are...

why would someone wear something they feel uncomfortable in. i don't know what kinda freeskiers you chill with, but its not even close to chicks having shopping problems and go to the mall every week and shop till they drop because there all about the new trends. theres necessities in skiing that you have the freedom to choose, why can spoiled girls talk about what they want want want, but we cant talk about what we neeeeed!? tell me how thats compared?

exactly. its not that everyone loves the clothes that they wear that much, its that its associated to skiing and it makes you want to ski and it reminds you how awesome skiing is. this is usually when its summertime and you have nothing better to do.

i can't help... whenever i see the new gear guide i want everything i see... but its not like i can afford it.. i'll probably end up with duck taped pants and old gear.. but i'll have a season pass from my summer of work and thats all that matters

haha so true, and what's wrong about wanting to look good when you ski? I mean it's ok to want to not look like a tourist I like having some nice clothes when I ski, and I don't care much outisde of that, but because of skiing i am more aware of what matches and what doesn't match lol...
