So I'm getting a laptop for college and don't know a lot about computers. I've been using a pc most of my life but I wanna try something different so I'm going to buy a macbook I think.
I heard the new macbooks come out soon and they have an aluminim case and some other upgrades, that seems pretty baller, can anyone confirm this for me?

Aight, I just don't wanna think ti will come out and not have a comp for like 3 months of school. I mean it wouldn't be a huge deal but it would be nice to have.

i have a feeling the new macbooks are gonna come out in mid September.
the student discount deal goes until september 15th, and i'm thinking they're trying to get rid of all their stock and make as much money as they can before releasing the new ones.
Just a thought.
and i bought a normal pro. no point in waiting.

Before you get a Mac, I would check and make sure that they are fine to use by your department.
I've had many a friend that bought a laptop only to discover they should have purchased a mac or should have purchased a PC.
If you are doing graphic design, film, or media, there is a good chance you would need a mac.
If you are doing computer science, engineering, or math, there is a good chance you would need a pc.
As far as the mac goes... I have a macbook pro. I got it in July of 2006. The only time I ever have issues with it is when I am trying to run illustrator, photoshop and flash at the same time. No problems with final cut or running photoshop, dreamweaver, flash, ichat, safari and mail.... It's only when illustrator gets opened that I have any issues. So as far as waiting on upgrades, you probably don't need them.
What I would do is go to the mac store and ask if they have any of the older releases of the 15 inch mac book pros available. If they have one or 2 in stock, they would probably be willing to give it to you at the cost of the macbook. I know when I went in to get mine, I asked what older ones they had and they had 3 17 inch ones that would have been about $50 cheaper than the one I ended up with, but $15 inches was just too much screen for a laptop to me.
Or even see if you can find a refurb 15 inch. If all you are waiting on is the aluminum, you can probably find it in a mac book pro.
Best luck!

Yo, I've seen 2 of your posts so far and god damn, your advice is all solid as fuck. so whoever's alias you are (if you are haha) you are way legit.
I'm studying economics and finance, so there will be some math. I just want a computer that is good and will last a fair amount of time. I don't really play games on it, but if it can run games that would be cool, not needed though. I'm not doing engineering or science, or film, media, or graphic design.
Shit, maybe I don't even need a laptop at all I dunno. Maybe I should reconsider that perhaps. I have a desktop for now that is fine. It was a graduation/christmas present from my parents but maybe I can just get cash or something else. but in any case thanks a lot.

Well, if you have a PC now, wait till next year to get a laptop. If this is your first year of college you wont feel tempted to bring it to class.
At my school no one used Laptops in GE's (which is what you will probably be in).
Besides, if you wait a year, you can probably get more bang for your buck. Technology costs keep dropping, and if you wait till summer and you still want the mac, they give you a free ipod and usually a printer two. I got the ipod and printer with mine, sold the printer for $80, and kept the Ipod and I got $300 off with the student discount. If you sold the Ipod too, you could probably get $200 for it and then you are pretty much getting $600 off. Think of the things you could do with $600.
Besides, if youre in a dorm, the desktop is a way better idea. It is way harder to steal a desktop than a shiny little macbook.
As far as who I am.... well I used to post on the Mt. High/Mammoth mountain forums constantly but since I had to move back to Minnesota, looking at their pictures just kind of depresses me so I shifted onto craigslist, realized they were all idiots, and decided to revive my account on here.

Word, I think that is what I will do. If I could give you more karma than 10 I certainly would. Welcome back to ns. I'm mostly in gur's (general university requirements) which I think are GE's probably? So far paper and pen has been fine. I've used the computers in the library more than mine anyway.
Now all I need to do is fix my desktop from viruses and spyware and all that shit GRR!!

most universities now allow both. if your going into engineering or computer science i would definitly go with a pc. I use windows for matlab and writing papers and stuff but for programming in c i virtual mount linux and run that. if your not doing engineering id say theres no problem with a macbook, except the fact that right clicking is so inconvenient on them...

word, for anything engineering a pc is a must. I'm a computer and systems major and practically every class has me running some kink of pc/linux based program.
For graphic design mac is probably better suited, and anything else is all preference. For econ you can probably get away with either as you won't be doing anything too crazy. Keep in mind that you can easily get the same performance from a pc as a mac for half the price.

If you are looking at Mac laptops, wait until October14th. Widely speculated that is when new MacBooks/MacBook Pros are being released. And even if you aren't impressed with the improvements then, the previous generation refurbished ones will likely be cheaper. It's only 2 and a half weeks, I'd wait.
Oh, and if you want you computer to last a long time, by a laptop. When you're done school you'll be happy you have something that can move around easily. Plus, after you realize how many other people in class have laptops, you'll probably be wishing you had one too. Seriously, unless you are doing huge financial projections or lots of graphics stuff you don't really need the massive screens on desktops, and the computing power is more than enough in laptops. I thought I'd be disappointed with my 13.3" screen, but I don't have any problems with it.

I'm not concerned much about the screen size at all, sure bigger is better but I don't want to pay a lot more for it. Those macbook air's look baller but I can't afford that shit.

id stay away from it, iver heard they don thave a cd drive but are realllly small adn light. id say just wait adn if you dont like the new ones, or its not worth paying extra for almost the same thing, go to an apple store adn pick up the previous gen macbook/pro for cheaper, or buy a refurb with a warentee from their online site.

http://www.macrumors.com/
That site has all the rumor speculation you can need. The next most probable time they will be announced is October 23rd where there is an apple event organized. There is also a buying guide where it will roughly give you an idea whether its worth buying apples product at that time or not.
http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
Most of the apple hardware is due for a renewal, and they have been low amounts of stock of current product for a while so im hoping that October 23rd will be the day there announced, also the new chipsets have been used in Windows based laptops so its most probable something will be released this year.
Hope that helps.
