The difference between "im a skier" and "ive been skiing"

ive been thinking and im pretty sure that this is one of my biggest pet peeves about skiing. its not actually the sport though. its the people. when is someone defined as a "skier"? it drives me crazy when skiing comes up when im talking to people somewhere off the mountain and they say "oh yeahhh im a skier i love it!" and then i get all excited and go skiing with them and it turns out theyve skied once when the class went for a field trip like 9 years ago in the fifth grade. i think that there is such a huge difference between "im a skier" and "ive been skiing". but where is the line between the two? is it a number of days a year? is it a certain skill level? i just cannot figure it out. anyone have an answer?

I am a skier. I get probably under 20 days a season due to:
No car
No job -> no money
Last season my home resorts (a shitty hill) park opened in february
A knee surgery, came from skiing
but
I own skis and ski gear
Im on NS probably 2-3 hours a day
I think about skiing every day
my lists are all fucked up now but let me list some more
Last season we didnt even have snow for christmas
Im not even that skilled
I do know what im talking about most of the time when i talk about skiing
I love skiing
Im trying to move somewhere else after HS because of better skiing

I am a skier

thinking about it hourly

well ya i think this speaks to the idea that number of times going up doesn't say a lot about how much of a skier you are. I think in this case you have to look a lot more at effort spent getting up to the mountain than anything else. If you grow up 5 minutes from an epic mountain you're basically a skier from the time you can stand until you choose to do something else. With someone thats got to drive 2 hours to a shitty mountain, thats a lot of dedication for a comparatively less amount of reward. The one bright side of that situation is, though, that you'll never take a day of skiing for granted in your life. Thats a skier in my book.
