i've got to say, it sounds like a really wierd idea to cut the amount of terrain features knowing full well that just 2 hours south of you, Mt Snow has 150% increased its dedication in just one off season. I know the cliantle (spelling) up there is different in big ways, but its a proven fact that teenagers drive vacation destinations in families and teenagers want to hit well built and maintained terrain parks. It's just fact. (transworld business, SAM Magazine...)
Not building 80 foot jumps... they (you're management) may have something there. Not building 50 -60 foot jumps, as Stowe, does not make sense to me. Stowe see's more expert skiers than most on the east coast, and should be looking for ways to challenge those skiers and riders, WHILE maintaining a fun and enjoyable experience for its novice customer base (that's where you're job and expertise comes in) It is 100% possible to build ANY feature that is both entertaining to experts and safe for novices. I promise. If you're management wants another opinion have them call me.
I was a pass holder there from 99-03. I saw the evolution through those years... You guys have come a long way since then and are entirely capable of managing impressive parks. You gotta convince them to have a little faith in your experience, talents, and drive.
With less and less natural snow being the likely case for the future, terrain parks seem like a fairly obvious choice to offer expert skiers who aren't recieving enough powder days on the hour glass, down hell brook or hiking out of the bruce. The added advantage? Novice skiers can now witness expert skiing on the very same trails they are skiing down and will aspire to learn how to be like the experts they see. It's addictive. it's how we all got better.
