Not a fan of pipe skiing

No offence meant to anybody at all but i really am not a fan of pipe skiing.  given i live in the midwest and i dont get to ride pipe much but i dont like watching it on the xgames that much.  I think that slopestyle is alot more fun and much more interesting to watch because it gives the riders a chance to be more creative and technical.  What do you guys think?

I hope my mountain makes the pipe this year, they were too damn lazy so instead we got a 10ft. down box. really gay. pipe is so fun, I would do it all day given the chance.

Our smaller mountain in town had like 2ft of the whole the thing done, i had to do with that....

^ agreed, slopestyle offers a lot more opportunity to be creative, but it's not necessarily more technical. I've never skied pipe either, maybe that's why I don't like it that much. I enjoy watching slopestyle much more. You get to see much more variety of tricks.

it's cool but i don't get nearly as much entertainment from it as i do slopestyle. but at the same time, if skiing has any chance of getting into the olympics (freestyle i mean) it will be in half pipe so we gotta keep pulling for it.

yeah i really dont like pipe at all, i can get out like maybe 6 feet or so and 5 in the pipe, but i just hate it, its icy shitty and no fun, like if i could magically have the ability to ride pipe really good, i wouldnt take it because i just dislike it so much. plus pipe is all about tech stuff which is not too cool.

This thread could be never ending. I disagree though. I think that pipe skiing is a lot more entertaining to watch: for both skiers, and spectators alike. It attracts a much higher fan base of people, and it is important that our kind of skiing is showcased to an audience bigger than us. Halfpipe has the amplitude, and the more recognizable athletes. Personally I would rather watch slopestyle, because that is the even that I participate in more. It's anyones game rather than a showdown between Tanner vs. Dumont (which does make for good TV). Slopestyle could be argued that it's more creative, because you have so much more to work with, rails, jumps, etc..., but something new is getting brought to the piple every time there is a comp, so I think halfpipe is just as innovative. You may not like halfpipe skiing, but it is much more widely recognizable.

  It's funny, I've never really enjoyed vert/half pipe comps.  From in-line, to skb, to bmx, to snowsports, I just find street and slopestyle events more visually appealing. 

  Don't misunderstand me, pipe skiers absolutely slay and I respect the shit out of the technical difficulty, amplitude, progression, etc.  For me, pipe runs are visually redundant.  I am suprised that the general public likes pipe more...I struggle to differentiate tricks sometimes...people who are clueless must just see spinning.

  I'd like to see slopestyle events get more coverage.  Also, I'd like to see host mountains construct parks that suit the best in the world.  The x-games slopestyle was a disgrace.  The rail/jib section was non-existent (cannon box was cool) and the jumps, particularly the money booter, were undersized.  I think slope could attract a bigger audience if there was a wider array of features, more of a tech/jib section, and larger hits.  It seems like a lot of courses are skewed towards jumps...never was this more true than at x.  Favoring the scandinavians perhaps?

^this years X-Games course was probably the best so far and why should a course with less rails and boxes favore scandinavians more than any other rider?

I love watching it but i dont like doingit because i suck at it haha. You have like one-two feet of breathing room between hitting the deck or landing in the flats. Shit takes skill.

  It was the best so far...and yet I don't think that it's anywhere approaching the level that the top pros are capable of destroying.  The jumps were far too close together and the landings were too short...riders consistently struggled with speed.  I just don't think it was up to par for an event that garners a few million viewers.

  I was half kidding about that last bit, not trying to be a dick.  I think 4 or 5 of the riders who qualified for the final were scandinavian (are norwegians considered scandinavian?  if not then extrapolate my half joke to encompass all europeans).  Other than Andreas, it seems like those riders are responsible for a huge share of the progression in the air at the expense of technical jibbing.  I think you may have seen an entirely different line-up in the final if rails/boxes would have been more heavily a factor.  Come on, two boxes?  I know 14 year olds who would have slayed that first feature.  I'd like to see somethting a bit more tech.

  No hate to the Europeans, you guys kill it, and I know there are plenty of tech/jib Euros.

i agree with u that slopestyle is a lot more fun to watch and i dnt understand y pipe events r so much bigger. but the real main reason why im not a fan of pipe skiing is because i suck at it and i dont get to do much pipe wherei live haha.

you said you were from the midwest and there are no pipes there.  For the longest time, I thought pipe was lame, until  i skied in a good one and practiced.  So I can see why you would not like it but. But if you ever get a chance to ski in a nice one, just spend some time with it and see what happens.

Slopestyle runs have been so predictable the last 4 years. Spin a shit load on the rail features, sw right, sw left, finish with sw 10/12(w/ mute grab) 
 Pipe had a few years when everyone did the same run (5/ 9/10 run) but now with switch on both walls and right side, there are so many more tricks to keep everyone’s run a little different.  So, I would say pipe is more interesting to watch at the moment.

you get alot more adrenaline dropping into a pipe then slopestyle...dropping in is such a sick feelin....but halfpipe is soooooo much sicker to watch...after your first time skiin pipe you appreciate really good pipe skiers more....fuckin 20 ft out is redic!!!! 3 ft. out seems like a lot when your skiin...imagine 20 or whatever simon's doin...i think it was 23

I've only ever gotten air out of the mini pipe at telluride. When I tried the pipe at sugarbush i didn't even make it up the wall before I ate shit, but that might have been because I was trying to edge up the icy wall.

I like watching some pipe, but I don't think progression in the pipe is where our sport should be going.

Yea slope is def more fun to watch cause it shows more of the skiers' bags of tricks and skills on different features, not just in the air.
Still, pipe takes soooo much skill and i have so much respect for any good pipe skiiers, I can't ski it for shit

living on the EC, the pipes are rarely made solid, thus not having proper resources i have mostly kept to the park

I love slopestyle, and I love pipe. It's nice diversity, and they are very different both for spectators and riding.

If you were to drop into a full fledged superpipe sometime, you will quickly realize just how fucking crazy it really is when you put it in perspective. Then again, you dont have to like it. But really, the level of riding for pipe is INSANE.

i haven't really thought about it untill it was mentioned in this thread, but scandinavians might be better at jumps then you people living in the states (talking pros here now), and you guys are way better on rails. Might have something to do with the parks we have over here, consisting of close to no rails, but stuffed with jumps in all sizes. At my mountain(s) i rarely see more than 5 rails in the parks, but you guys have like 20 different ones to slay.

I don't think the x-games guys are cutting down on rails and boxes to make scandinavians win. I'm guessing they're mostly americans, and why wouldn't they want an american to win?

personally i hope next year's x-games slopestyle will have more rails and boxes. Hopwfully this might make scandinavian parks realize their need of boxes and rails.

pipe is harder, thats why more people dont ski it.  you progress much slowerin the pipe because its an event where you really have to know how to ski well.

pipe is soo much harder to progress in than slope. so many unknowns killing it on jumps and rails. not so much for pipe. that might be why you dont relate to pipe, i mean, most people cant really do much in the pipe.

i dont dislike either slopestyle or pipe but I find pipe a little more enjoyable to watch because of how little time there is between each hit. In slopestyle the skier does a trick and you have to watch them ski flat for a while, while in pipe each trick is one after another

ya i dont like watching pipe, it always seems a little bit acrobatish and unsteezy (besides tanner hall) it reminds me of freestyle moguls. actually i dont like watching any comps at all. a really dope sw 7 could lose to a technically "perfect" sw 7, theres no room for creativity

I agree with you about the midwest part, The pipes out here are pretty much death traps. They are cut horribly and arent maintained at all, eventually turning into walls of ice. So its hard to learn to ride pipe or progress without injuring yourself. I'm not sure if your saying you don't like to ride it or watch it. I love watching halfpipe, but i could care less riding it since I have a less than sub par pipe to ride.

i like watching pipe and slopestyle. personally slopestyle is more fun for me to watch and more creative with features ( well obviously) but pipe, is deffinatly a fun thing to ride personally, so i mean its really a toss up

if i lived in PC, i would ski pipe all day.  when i was there, me and my friends were the only ones skiing it....and its by far the best pipe ive ever skied.

I think pipe skiing is pretty awesome and it seems more technical. But slopestyle is also really sick and i also live in the midwest so i never really see much pipe action.

pipe is cool i guess but people make waaaaay to much of a big deal out of it personally id rather make a huge deal out of slope i also personally slope is waaay cooler they just need to make it bigger with some rails/boxes in there

i agree 100% slopstyle is a completly better way of showing ur creative side and its a lot more steezy than pipe    but props to all the guys and gals that can rip pipe its a tough one to get good at
