IPod questions

My current mp3 player is an iRiver H340. It was playing up so I sent it back for a service and received it back with a new HD, battery and main board today so pretty much as-new/refurb condition. Anti-iPod fanboys are all over these still and they're going for £180+ used on eBay over here. So I could sell it and get a new 80Gb iPod Classic and make £40. The advantage of the iPod is a much slimmer design and I won't have to teach my friends how to pick a track every time they ride in my car.

But, what's the score with iPods these days? I avoided it 4-5 years ago because I didn't know a single person who hadn't had problems with theirs. Are they robust (physically and electronicly) now? And importantly, is iTunes a pain in the ass to use for transferring stuff (the iRiver was just drag and drop like an external HD)? And can you make playlists on the iPod itself? Any other comments? All I'm using it for is listening to music, I don't give a crap about anything else.

Well I've never had a durability problem with my 2.5 year old 30 gb ipod video. But I'm just careful with it and don't toss it on hard concrete. Although it has had a few drops over the years.

But I hear the new ones are pretty much bombproof. They all have reinforced metal casings now I think. Especially if you get a flash ipod I would never expect it to break.

As to the transfer issue. I don't have a problem with it. It's not just drag and drop with your other player but all you have to do is

File
Add folder to library
Choose any folder (any size) and the songs will go into your library

^This all depends if its in the right format but itunes will convert most uncompatible formats to a compatible one. I've never had any problems with it.

The new classics suck.

I dont know why they would make them slightly shittier, but they did.

The click wheel isnt as responsive as the last generation video, and well... they skip. Seriously.

If you want to get an iPOD get a touch. Flash memory, 36 gigs or whatever, light, tough enough.

Itunes is not so bad. You can make an on the go playlist on your ipod, then change it in itunes.

The only problem I realy have with itunes is the volume leveling. As albums get older they seem to get quieter, and purchased songs etc seem to have worse quality than ones Ive torrented. Its kinda wierd. does anyone else have this issue?

Huh I've never noticed this problem. Maybe its an issue with your speakers or something. But that wouldn't explain why only the old songs became quieter. Just get some speakers and headphones that bump, that should solve the problem.

16gb touch should suit you fine, so many things can be done with it, great screen for watching vids....just so much opportunity. you can get them for about 250 on craigslist as well

32Gb won't cut it. 64 would be manageable if they bring one of those out but that would cost a lot no doubt. Apple is pretty lame not bringing out a 64Gb Nano, they have the capability but they're always going to just update things really slowly so that everyone buys each update.
