Marijuana does not kill brain cells

Much to the contrary of everyones beliefs, marijuana does NOT kill brain cells. 

Here is what marijuana does do to the brain.



Recently found within the last 6 years of so were cannaboid receptors in the brain.  Cannaboid receptors are similar to opiate receptors and so on, they allow cannaboid cells to naturally fuse into the brain and help with the process of breaking down thc cells and other cannaboid cells.  Essentially this means that our brains over thousands of years of evolution have developed a natural process to help with the intake of cannaboids.  Because there are natural receptors for these cells, they do not have to resort to finding other places within the brain to store themselves which results in damaged or lost brain cells. 

So why have people always though pot kills brain cells and is bad for your brain?  Because although it may not directly kill brain cells, it does have a significant effect on a very key part of your brain; the hippocampus.  The hippocampus plays a major role in our short term memory and also with spatial navigation.  Located within the hippocampus are the cannaboid receptors that over time, can become damaged due to to much intake of cannaboids, mainly thc, and become damaged.  Once these receptors are damaged they then affect the hippocampus. 


So wtf does all this shit mean?   It means that if you smoked every day for 10+ years straight, the ONLY noticeable affects would be your short term memory. 


Weed is fucking harmless.  The affects from one joint compared to the affects of 5-6 beers dont even compare.  Alcohol is so much worse for your body than pot is.  So smoke on smokers.

Ya meth may make holes in your brain, but those parts you don't need anyway. Essentially, meth just gets rid of the parts of the brain that you don't need so you can use the calories that you save for other great activities, like having sex, or smoking more meth.

not really, my friend has been smoking for 10 years and now he smokes everyday, he is not stupid at all, he talks about very educated stuff and makes some good points and shit.  He does have a short term memory and is usually never on time because of it and other shit haha but he's awesome.

marijuana and alcohol are different though. people for some reason always compare marijuana to drinking. thery are two different feelings.... its completley different. WHY DO PEOPLE COMPARE THEM? yes weed is safer far safer, BUT STOP COMPARING THEM. i love sitting back smoking a joint, but when youre at a party get wasted, its much more fun, just trust me, it is.

bahaha i dont care what studies have been done i know so many pot heads that are soooo fucking stupid(that were 100% different a few years ago mentally) that it puts this idea to shame...

ever heard of the term perma-fried? i know like 4 people that are so perma-fried the look and act like they are stoned when they arent.

Long term:   I've noticed people's peronalities changing over several years of usage, for the worst.

More than that...

there are receptors in your brain that translate chemical signals into emotions such as happiness, pleasure, etc. Alcohol and other chemicals that enter your brain can be translated into chemical signals too, but since they aren't natural, they can re-shape the receptors so other chemical signals (natural ones) don't register anymore. It is then harder for you to be happy without chemical inhibition.

I read that in a scientific paper, so don't try to call me out, unless you have updated info. It was an old paper, there's a chance more is known now.

Yeah but if you stopped for a few months you'd be good to go. Maybe not good as new, but massively better. As others have said, THC clogs not kills.

I smoked multiple times daily for two years, and by "multiple times" I mean 5+. My short term memory was pretty bad, and my general brain function was definitely reduced (hard to explain without specific examples) but... I've smoked like four times in the past two months, and after the first two weeks of being clean I had no more problems. Most of the damage is very temporary and dependent on continued use.

word i was smoking everyday 3 or 4 times a day, and a lot too for a good year or year and a half. i couldn't remember shit, but somehow still did really good in school. but like if someone asked me to do something, i would forget they even asked. plus i was pretty fucking dumb as well. then i quit cold turkey for 6 months and was good as new within a month i'd say. lately i've been smoking like a couple times a month, and it's a lot better.

Dude, do you know how to read? I said it makes your short term memory down a peg and generally makes you think a little slower, but that it's all TEMPORARY. As in if you quit, you're FINE. My GPA from pre-smoking to smoking regularly changed from a 3.8 to a 3.65 and it's only because I got lazier about homework... I got a 2190 on my SATs, I got a 3.5 my first year at college, a 3.9 taking three courses at a community college last year... all during my prime smoking years. Don't preach like you know when you don't.

can we stop making threads trying to prove that marijuana is harmless? 

Can we please all come to the conclusion that smoking marijuana in any fashion is worse for you that not doing so?  Yes, marijuana may not kill your brain cells (who knows if it actually does) and it may not have very many long term effects, but not smoking marijuana is definitely more healthy than smoking marijuana.  It may be fun and the negative effects may not be the best reason to not do it, but stop trying to prove to people that it is perfectly healthy.

this is all pretty dumb i can find articles all over that say it doesnt do shit, "it's proven!" but then i can find ones that say if you smoke weed you'll kill your family, this is also "proven". yay! this proves nothing. and for you to say that having no short term memory is ok, you must be a retard. if you cant remember what happened or what was told to you you cant store it to your perment memory. thus you will remember nothing. this is a bad argument. if it effects your short term it effects your long term. they're hand and hand. and any studies that have been done are basicly usless because of the amount of THC that is in weed now adays, it's much much higher than when your parents smoked it. so studies on peoples brain after "long time use" are basicly usless unless you're smoking mexi packed, detergent soaked, roach infested shit weed.

basicly if you want to smoke do it, if you want to drink do it, shit if you want to shoot up heroin and run around naked in uggboots it's your life. do it. but dont argue that somthing is not bad for you when obviously it is not good. you dont see people eating vitimans and feeling all messed up.

i really dont want to spend all the time it would take to detangle this ball of illogical batshit but im just gonna say a few things.  firstly i want you to know that your point is well taken, people do what they want.  however, i dont think there is anything published in a peer reviewed, credible source that says if you smoke youll kill your family.  also, it is possible to go without any short term memory at all.

now i know youre thinking that this guy has a shit life and its true but he is functional to some extent and seems very happy to me.  also remember that stoners still have a short term memory, it just doesnt function perfectly.  lastly, quality of weed doesnt really matter for two reasons. first those studies that show the weed potency increasing are bullshit.  secondly, if your smoking schwag youll smoke maybe 2 bowls of the shit to get high. if your smoking bomb as headies then your probably not gonna need more than a few hits.  if you chug 40 oz of beer youll be drunk, if you chug 40 oz of vodka youll be dead. for more info click http://stash.norml.org/2008/05/27/not-your-fathers-pot-the-myth-of-cannabis-potency/

ok so the kill your family line was taken a bit to the extreme but i was just trying to convey a point. and i know people's short term memory isn't going to be compleatly disolved. but the weed today has a way higher potency than in the past, saying otherwise is like heart surgery was just as good 20 years ago as it is today. strains have changed, growing techs., fertilizers, lighting availibility, it's just going to be better. it's like a science now. crazy shiz, i've known a few growers and its outa hand.
