Movie Effect in lots of ski movies

You know that effect where it kind of fades in and out a redish-orange tint? Its in lots of ski and wakeboard movies. I've seen it in happy dayz and many others. Can you make this kind of effect from premiere or after effects? Is there a plugin for it? Does anyone know what i'm talking about?

It's called a film burn. It only occurs on 16mm cameras. It happens just before the camera runs out of film - to let the cinematographer know he needs to change roles.

its called tape roll on my bonus cd with effects on it, i use it as a transition because i cant over lap it over video, ill try to post it in the vid sec.

if you want film burn then buy and shot 16mm. a film burn on digital footage just makes you look like an ass who doesnt know shit about film

As stated above it is a film burn, it naturally occurs on 16mm cameras but it is also possible to duplicate it dependign on what you use for a video editor. If you have somethign like premiere or final cut you could probably either find the effect online or playing with some of the settings could work too. Maybe try this site http://www.tutorialfind.com/tutorials/adobe/ they have a decent amount of tutorials for premiere if that is what you use.

if your movie is all digi, def do not try to replicate film burn.. like clausen said it just looks stupid... do some other transitional shit... get more creative then just what youve seen.

Thats a weird thing to say? Its a video-effect? Why can't I use it if it looks good, just because I dont own a 16mm camera?

The effect looks cool, so i would like to know how to do it. I know it can be done as a digital effect, but I don't know how.

im not saying you cant use it... infact go for it, but im just saying it looks like shit if you try to create a film burn effect and put it over digital footage... Its just ironic, and it will look like shit... Defintly do try it out tho...maybe somehow you can make it look good over digi footie, ive never been able too...

Im pretty much just trying to help you out here and also saving your time with these comments...

you can animate tho... what you need is after effects.. and basically what you do it line up 2 tracks... then 5-10 frames before the first clip ends make a red orange or yellowish pattern that slowly fades into white then it hits the 2nd clip... from there do the first clip thing in reverse, maybe flippin around the frames you created... this would probly be the best way to do it... the faster it happens the better, when its fake... so people dont notice that its fake.

anothe rnot you would probly have to create these frames in photoshop.. This would probly be the best way, although im sure theres one click drag filters out there that do a more shitty version of it.

What the shit does he know? Well let's see, first off he seems to display a pretty proficient knowledge of editing and what aesthetically appealing. Additionally, if he is the guy I am thinking of, he edited the teaser for wicked and will be editing part of the PBP Film this season.

transitions are gay. don't ever use a dislove or fade. effects are also retarded. It'll just junk up your movie. Anyone who has Imovie can drag over an effect. If you want to use effects spend time learn how to make your own. But really custom effects won't make a bad movie good. You should really join the movie makers cult. There's alot of good help in there.

film burn is pretty played out, dont replicate that shit it is already everywhere. i think the most underdeveloped area of sports editing is audio. most people dont give the audio the attention it deserves.

I think the music in a lot of skimovies is great. There aren't a lot of emotions or feelings being shown in the movies though, so it's hard to accentuate that with the music. Not a lot of dialog going on that you can improve on. No live music that you can mix to a good quality.

Ofcourse there are things, but I don't see a world of opportunities, just saying.

Well to start just about every urban or jibbing shot should be shot with DV or 16mm with recorded audio. When filmers captilize on the noise of skiers boosting out of the halfpipe or charging a rail they bring a completly differnt feel to the shot than simply a silent picture, it makes you feel like you are actually there watching.

Also some of the people in this thread are complaing about overused transitions, a unique and rare transition option is fading in leading audio from a shot into the previous clip. when the video cuts to the new shot you already have heard a truck go by on an urban rail or whatever and then get to see the actual trick.

Exact Science killed it in editing last year and have great examples of the shit you can do with developed audio. Phil Belangers still photo intro with camera shutter and other noises as the picture flashed was totally gnarly and their segment transitions worked with other sick noises to bring a differnt feel than any other film last year.

Its all about tapping into as many senses as possible to emulate skiing through your TV. All we are missing is the last 3. Any of you video producers should seriously consider putting pine tree smell, hot chocolate and fake snow in your dvd boxes to help bring the entire skiing experience to your viewers.

what we do is film your tv close up with happy dayz when it comes right after the pbp thing and there is a huge film burn right there with a black background. then screw around with luminencence settings and motion to make it transparent and on the edges. dont over use it though and make it really transparent then it doesnt look gay.

BK > Good answer! I guess you're right :-) I must admit that I have seen some movies with very good audio use, but filmmakers tend to overlook it since they're all caught up in the video.

And to the last post, thanks man, sounds bizzare, but Ill try that to see what I can turn it into.

If you listen closely on Belan's segment in RFA there's quite a bit of contrived audio as well...the sound of the skis..birds chirping..it's pretty dope.

i have gotten a film burn like 2 or 3 times with super 8. i think its harder to get it on 8mm because the film comes in pre sealed plastic cartridges instead of rolls

BK - the problem with shooting urban in 16 is that it is very expensive as urban rails have a lower success rate than other aspects of skiing...plus you need an alternate method of recording sound. dv is the best bet there for sure...

If you want the best sound on digi for urban rails, get a camera with xlr inputs and hook up a dat to it, get a boom mic and a fishpole and your set.

my camera shoots full 24p at 48 frames per second and gets an image as close to 16mm film without actually USING 16mm film or a HIGH-DEF 24p digi camera...i dont use film burn, but ive put it over clips and it looks NOT AT ALL outve place...i just like a photo flash effect better then a film burn

anyway...i shoot audio straight off my camera with an xlr shotgun mic, works fine for all rails and everything else
