Obama, anti-war? Not so much

I just need to quickly set the record straight on this. I see a lot of people (especially on NS) saying they like Obama because he's going to "get us out of the war." This is just not the case.
In regards to Iraq, Obama wants a timeline for withdrawal, but he's said that we won't pull out if it's not stable and the country's not ready - for practical purposes, that's basically the same as what McCain is saying: we'll leave when we can without the country collapsing.
In regards to Afghanistan, Obama wants to send MORE forces there (which is probably necessary at this point, but again, not a very anti-war position). You can see for yourself in this article: http://www.france24.com/en/20080720-obama-meets-karzai-afghanistan-usa
In regards to Pakistan, Obama has said on a number of occasions that unilateral military action in the country is something he would consider. In his own words, he has said that, "if the United States had 'actionable intelligence against
high-value Al Qaeda targets, and the Pakistani government was unwilling
to go after those targets,' the United States should strike" (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/22/world/asia/22tribal.html).
Now personally, I don't particularly like either candidate. But I just want to point out that Obama isn't really as "anti-war" as most people seem to think.

Maybe something similar somewhere, I don't know. But I just typed it up quick because of the blatant, unquestioning Obama fellatio going on here and elsewhere.

I'm not saying that, I'm saying don't go and vote for Obama because you think he's going to bring all US troops home right away and end all conflict on earth.

its pretty much common knowledge that osama bin laden is hiding out in pakistan, so Obama would actually be accomplishing the origional goal of the war on terror, which was to find Osama, which we have 8 years later still not been able to do

Again, I'm not saying that any of these ideas are necessarily bad or unnecessary. I agree that we should find Osama bin Laden, and obviously he's most likely in Pakistan. So maybe more military action there is the right call. I'm just saying that there's this misconception that Obama is the peace candidate and, while he's less blatantly hawkish than McCain, that's still not entirely accurate.

i tend not to get involved in these political threads, but this one has been much more intelligently worded and hasn't been raped by 15 year olds, yet... so i'll toss in my two cents.
so yea, there are alot of people on this site riding obama lately as the anti-war candidate. this may also be the viewpoint of many american voters (key word, voters...) half the kids on here cant vote anyway, but i digress and that's a completely different story. really i don't have much of a point here, more just an observation. our country is at war, and not only that, but our country is in so deep, that no matter what candidate (even if it were 2 completely different people running) takes office, they are going to have so much to deal with over there that they wouldn't just be able to "get us out of the war". the situation is FAR more complicated than that and obama is no idiot, he isn't going to come out saying as soon as im president we'll leave Iraq. saying that would be a blatant lie and would be utterly impossible. so yea, for what's its worth, just a little comment on the topic at hand...

This is true and a good point. I just wanted to point out that Obama's position isn't really any more anti-war than McCain's. Obama is basically saying, "We're gonna leave as soon as we can without Iraq completely falling apart." McCain is saying, "We're gonna stay until the job is done." Well, at this point, the "job" is getting Iraq to the point that the indigenous government can control the country - in other words, the point where we can leave without the country completely falling apart.
So basically...McCain's war stance = "We're not leaving until the job is done." Obama's war stance = "We're leaving as soon as the job is done." And some how people are looking at that and taking away from it, "Oh, Obama is anti-war. I'm gonna vote for him because he'll end the war right away." And I don't understand.

Yeah for sure. That wasn't meant to be a counter-point or anything, just thought I'd add a little more to the perspective. I guess another thing I was getting at is a lot of the "anti-war" obama talk that you're hearing is undoubtedly from young kids who may or may not (most likely may not) be very informed on the subject. So that's certainly one answer to your question...

Actually, from the extent of what I've read, Obama WAS anti war ... then he realized that his positions were stupid AND dangerous.
Just like when he and michelle said they woudl never use their children to advertise .... until they did it ...
flip flop flip flop
