the d40x is one of the lower dsl's you can get but its decent for a new photographer. All the other stuff in the package is crap though, flash, filter, tripod is really cheap and is commonly done through ebay so it looks like your getting a lot of stuff, i got a smaller deal with my dslr camera off of ebay and the tripod broke really easily...so i would say you can probably get the body somewhere around $500, and then buy things seperatly, that way you won't sacrifice you time on cheaply made technology.
To be honest the d40x isn't a load better than the d40. Don't be put off by the 6 megapixels, the sensor more than compensates for it and unless you plan on blowing the pictures up huge (A3 size) then the d40 is a lot better value for money and the 10.2 megapixels that the d40x has really doesn't make a huge difference. The d40x is nikons 'beginner dslr', if your just starting out it'd probably be great for you.
The ebay page doesnt look very legit though, and like the guy above says the stuff that it comes with looks cheap and not very well made. However, the camera should be fine
Not a great deal at all really. If you check deal sites like slickdeals.net and fatwallet.com for a while you can find some good stuff. I tried to buy a canon xt (just to sell on ebay) with kit lens for $300 but it was sold out when I tried. It was refurbished but still a good deal no the less. I bought an xti with kit lens and 70-300 lens and a free photo printer (after rebate and I dont even use) for 700 off of ritz camera last november. You should also check craigslist too, some great deals to be found on there.
