during yet another boring class at school i suddenly realised how much music affects society, so i used the rest of the time to figure out how it actaully does
you see back in the times when we had bands such as led zepplin and pink floyd their lyrics actually meant something if you listened to them. they could make you a more intelluctual and smarter person if you thought about what they were saying and how its true.
but now we have all these prebubescant little kids otherwise known as pop stars writting songs about the same bs, whinning how they cant have a girl or their fucking 'liquid dreams' wtf is that all about. then we have rap, such as eminem, telling kids its cool to do drugs and to beat women, now that is fucking horrible music(to me). now im not saying that all music today is horrible and meaningless and all rap speaks about kiling people and doing drugs, just compared to music from earlier dates, IT SUCKS!!!
now back to my rant, music is part of our everyday lives we hear songs and we know the lyrics so we sing along and the ideas and thoughts get stuck in our head, all these rhymes that are syncronised to annoying beats from some fag on a keyboard.
Most of these artists are broadcasting a message on how we should look or act. So next time you hear a song on the radio really try to listen to the lyrics and make sense of them youll realise what crap is being put out....
hopefully at least some of this made sense to you, please let me know your thoughts so i know that im not alone in this boat....

you could always be like me and just disconnect the radio in your car to force people to listen to good music. despite that you're right, most of the pop crap put out now is written by someone else and not the actual manufactured band.
The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs.

Yeah I dont think he thinks too much. Like who listens in school anyway. Our new music is crap, people write it for money and fame. I dont really care if the lyrics dont really make sense if its a fun song but you dont see any of that anymore. I say we go to a britney and n'sync concert get on the stage and beat the fucking band off the stage.

I totally agree about Zep and Floyd, they are completely unique and will never be matched. U2, Pearl Jam and DMB are the only ones that could possibly make it on the same plane as them.

Most of the bands today, especially pop, do suck and their lyrics are horrible. Maybe it is because music has been around so long. I think a lot about when music will get to the point where everything has been done. No new sounds, no new lyrics. Probably wont happen but.

Where did you find it?

About... you do have a point. a lot of the music nowadays has no voice. Pink Floyd's lyrics are really deep and meaningful if you are intellectual enough to understand them. However, such bands still exist. Look at the punk scene. I'm not talking about your emo, or pop-punk. I'm talking about your dorepunk. This is music with heart and meaning. Their songs tend to be deep, and have meaning. One CD with tons of meaning is Anti-Flag's, 'A New Kind of Army'. Each song ha it's own meaning, and is very deep in it's values. So not ALL music is void of thought and meaning. There still is a lot of meaning in music, you just have to know which music to listen to, in oreder to get that feeling.

But i do agree that more of the mainstream music is void of true feelings. I have nothing against singing about love and what not, but Britney Spears can't tell us that she has those feelings, when she has her songs written by a professional lyricist. If you're gonna sing about love, and whatnot, have it from the heart. Make sure that you wrote the song, cause otherwise you're just being a fraud.

never did like pop music. it's all bad. that song 'pop' by n'sync is terrible. I mean, how could they degrade so low to sing that and still look at themselves in the mirror?

oh i'm sure they have no problem looking in the mirror :-) i think the band that has the most meaning right now is system of a down. its so hard to get meanings out of some of them tho because they use realy deep metaphors

the only thing wrong with SOAD now is that since they are more mainstream than before people like them because they hear them on the radio but have no idea what he's singing about. because of the radio people don't give a shit about meaning anymore because there usually is none.. but when there is they don't even notice (talkin about teeny bopper ppl)i say fuck radio .. i never listen to that shit.. it ruins music

you listen to music that is not on the radio and it kicks ass, except EMO, sorry to all you EMO fans out there but im sick about people whining about shit, and that is what is starting to piss me off about punk, to many whining, and another thing about punk, it is all starting to suck, according to most people you have to act a certian way and look different to be a punk, which is totally dumb, because most punk promotes pacifism and stuff but there is no rule saying you have to have a mohawk or shit like that, spikes everywhere, that is the supposed 'rebellion' but then you have a 'uniform' and that is totally contradicting what you are trying to become, so i figure that if you wore comfortable cloths all the time it would be more of a rebellion beacuse then you are nto dressing yourself up to fit in with everything... and another thing too many bands preach now, it kind of gets annoying

we were kinda talking about that a little bit in english class the other day. not directly people dessing like a punk... but teenagers in general. They dress and act different just so they can be an individual and act against your parents, but if you look around school a hell of a lot of people dress and look the same... So where is the individuality if everyone looks the same?

This whole 'I hate pop' splurge brings the question, what is pop?
Is it 'popular' music, or is a pop culture? I've heard people claim that pop is ANY music that confines itself to a simple or common beat.
Anecdote: I was looking on ticketmaster today, and I noticed that Nelly Furtado was classed under Alternative while Big Wreck was classed under pop.

It kind of humors me how the common aura here is that punk is cool because it's rebelious, and pop sucks. It just brings to my mind the Monkey's. A pop band who did not write their own music, but are the epidemy of rebelious music.

Good point Rebs. Also... it's not just modern music. There was plenty of music with no meaning in the 60's, 70's, and 80's, and it'll always be that way.

As for conformity... it's impossible to not conform. So you want to not conform by wearing someting different... the only way to do that, is to not wear ANYTHING to school. In the end, punk music is about your mind, not your clothes. But it is distinguished by that style of dress. THO you don't need to dress a certain way to be a part of that group.

Yeah, there's definitely a certain degree of 'I want to be different just like all of my friends' Dressing punk doesn't mean you have to be an individual, it just gives you some seperation from the mainstream. You're never going to dress completely individual.

I am willing to admit I like a lot of music... some of it being mainstream. Because... i like the sound. Like music for yourself... not others...

Yea I completely agree. There is tons of music that still has meaing and stuff but just isnt played on the radio and doesnt get much media attention. So there are bands that are equal with pink floyd but they just arent popular. I personly think DMB gets way to much respect and ok but not that great.

SkierX, you're right when you say music isn't much different now. I wanted to say that, but I thought that if my post got any longer, nobody would read it.

And yes, like music for yourself. I agree that there should be a little more respect for bands that started in a garage and played any trashy booking they could get, but you can still appreciate music written by someone other than the performer. Just think of it as a piece of art that had contributions from many people.

I think that you need to listen to some rap music again, they don't rap about killing people. They rap about their people gettin killed, but that was mostly back in the days with NWA. And a lot of these new rock groups yell in the songs about using drugs. rock sucks, no beat and all they do is yell into the damn microphone.

what bothers me is when record labels sell the image of the artist instead of the music. britney spears is the best example of this. her music is written by 40 year old men, and the record label is trying to make her a role model for younger girls.

slip knot and all that other heavy metal rock is definetly crap, kill your parents burn them and shoot yourself in the face music is all it is, though some korn songs do reflect problems kids are having, like freak on a leash, that song has some really awesome lyrics if you listen to it

Ok this needs to come back to the top. I would also like to ad on to what SkierX was saying by pretty much reminding us that in the end the reason that older music always seems better is becuase you rember all the GOOD music with good lyrics etc. you don't rember the bad shallow lyric stuff. Just try and think of a pop star that was popular 3 years ago, 99% of you won't be able to name one. But almost everyone knows about Zepplin and Floyd simply becuase they were better, they have more staying power, also the songs send the same messages now as they did now, most of the ideals and meaning in the good music is universal to people anytime, anywhere.

true. but the people that we look back on were good/ the best at their time. how many of us are gonna look back and say that the 'good' musicians (or even 'good musicians') of our time were even comparable to the musical greats.

most people will, the population that does enjoy 'pop' music might look back in 20 years saying it was great, but some might have matured enough to realise that most of it wasnt, music is heading in all different directions hell maybe in the future all great musicians like floyd and zep will be forgotten eniterly

dont jump on rap, ill agree that a lot of it is crap about drugs,murder or cars/money. but there is a small part that actually has message's that are worth saying. one of my favorite is a song about how the pop world works. its deception by blackalicious
