Hey you can call me a dumbass or searchbar but whatever I tried, I was wondering what the format of the Red HD cameras was, as in does it go to a hard drive, film, some other kind of mini dv, whatever. I was just wondering this because i was thinking, once they got cheaper would they become the stock prosumer grade camera, or if it was film that had to be developed, so it wouldnt. anyways, im not gonna read through that before posting because i doubt it makes sense. any help would be nice. thanks.
I was looking at their site earlier today and they record in Redcode raw format (.C3D). It records on a hard drive or solid state drive. So no its not film. And a cheaper version is coming out soon just search red scarlet. I think its going to be about $3000
My school is trying to get 2 RED cameras for the Advanced Video class this coming year. I really hope they do so I get to use one when I take it in the spring. So sick.
yeah and its definitely not a camera that would be great for action sports. It comes with a fixed 8x lense :(. both fixed and 8x being the super bummer part of that. THen you have to buy the device what it records to, either the hard drive (which u dont really want if your carrying it around a lot) or the card (pretty much just like the p2), and then you also have to buy teh batteries and such. Even the scarlet will be around 8ish when its all said and done. And Red records a RAW format, which means you pretty much need a Mac Pro thats pretty loaded in order to handle it.
the scarlet probably wont be available to the public until late next spring. It's released in early 09 but that doesn't mean it's going to be readily available.
Also, the specs on the camera aren't set in stone and are almost guaranteed to change. Chances are that no one will know the final product specs until a month or two before the release date.
