the bikes are cool, but a lot of the people ive seen on them typically wear thick black plastic glasses, sweaters, what i like to call an "indie" beard, tight fitting pants, and depending on the season (every season except summer) scarves. and i know this has nothing to do with you, but that is who usally rides those bikes, thus earning them the stereotype of emo or some other kind of "look". /explanation
but really, ignore that. if you find a good one buy it up. they are pretty cool. free bump.

not trying to harp on the threadmaker, he can do what he wants, but i really dont understand the fixed gear craze, evryones apeshit for these bikes with 1 speed and no brakes in my city (vancouver) which is a very hilly city. i understand the point is to make the bike as light as possible, and having 1 gear just for simplicity kinda makes sense, but i dont understand why people wouldnt still want like a front brake at least and a ratchet on the back wheel, like a bmx.
from what ive seen/herd fixed gear riders shred their back tires stupid fast and get in more crashes. if you want efficientcy just get a roadbike.
oh and yeah most people who ride them are sceensters, its a fact.

Giving up you're ability to coast is like giving up your ability to reproduce.

fixed gear and single speed are different. single speed gears do coast (like bmx bikes) but fixed gears are just like they sound... fixed. With a fixed gear, your pedals are always moving so no coasting.

There are..
Single speed: Coast, pedal forwards and backwards
Freecoasters: Coast pedal forwards but NOT backwards
Fixie: NO coasting, When the wheel moves, the cranks move, forward or backwards

fair enough, id keep the ratchet though, then all you have to do is take all your gears and shifters off cept the ratio you feel like keeping and your set, no new wheel required, the ratchet mechanism prolly adds less weight than the poop in your large intestines.
oh and get pedal clips if you dont have em, pretty much doubles effecientcy.

i just bought a new pair of pink velocity wheels so i'd sell you my old set, but i stripped the threads on the fixed side of the hub, hence my purchase of a new wheelset. fixed gears are awesome. glad to see more people on this site are into them.
how much are you looking to spend? you can order a pretty sick set from this shop in phillly called Bell's for like $120 or so.

I dont have one that I could sell but what I would suggest is craigslist, ebay, or your local bike shop. You could just buy a flip flop hub and then use your old rim and buy some new spokes. Should be around $60 for hub and spokes but thats just a estimate so dont quote me on it
