Two Plank Productions and i movie

all summer i took some i movie lessons from my older brother and think i could do everything that two plank productions did in the trailer in the i movie program. not saying bad stuff about this company but i think with such a big productions and big pros, they probably should do some better editing. with so many sick trailers that came out before this one, you think they would take some lessons! here is the two plank trailer (average) showed with the get luck teaser (amazing!) what do you guys feel ?

you have to take a lot of things into account when comparing these 2 trailors dude. Two Plank Productions is more of an am production company and doesn't have a large budget. Field Productions has a little bit bigger budget as well as a little more equipment to work with. I think you're underestimating the costs and necessities that it tales to produce a film. It's very very difficult. So before you bash two plank (whose editing isn't bad at all.) consider what they have to work with.

Two Plank is a am company? they have sleds! they have sponsors! how does that make them am? i agree about it being very very hard to make a ski movie and i think two plank did a good job with the flim clips in the trailer, they all look really good and some are really sick! but like i said, the editing is a little wierd

did you actually look at their sponsors? i consider them am when compared to level1 and MSP. Hell, jacob wester has sponsors and he's an am. Sponsors don't make you what you are, you do.

i disagree.
i saw minimal differences in editing quality in those two trailers
filming yes, editing no.
i have also seen some superb editing in a two plank trailer that went above and beyond most (i dont have a link sorry)
thats just my opinion anyways.

agreed - i actually saw more stuff that couldn't be done in imovie in the two plank trailer than the field trailer, but Get Lucky still is the better trailer

just to be clear about this because i have been getting messages about the 'quality' on here- i have nothing to do with this movie. I did not make it and my name is nowhere near it. And yes, you can't expect big things from an am company with little budget. It takes lots of dollars to make a sick flick.

i hate to do this cause its gonna seem like im just arguing for the hell of it, but i still disagree

when i mentioned quality i was talking about the editing, and i don't see any truly noticeable difference
"get lucky" will be up with the pros this year because it has a lot of big name, if not certifiably pro skiers in it
Two Planks has (correct me if im wrong) i think no true pros in it.
it is about as pro/am as you could get with heli-time and tons of sled time and a decent amount of sponsors, but it is still am
still, im personally more excited for Two Planks.
this is because i am more of a backcountry enthusiast, and i believe it will show the nature and ejorment of skiing more than fields.
just my opinion.

bottom line, both have solid editing, in HD, with a decent budget, and good skiers
they will both be excellent movies.

i think the thread creator is confusing editing with graphics/animation. for just straight editing, as in how you place the shots and the music in the video, it doesn't matter what editing program you use. but with professional programs, ie not imovie, you can do whatever you want with text, graphics, filters, etc. plus the big details that you don't notice, can't really be done with imovie, like proper color correction and audio mixing.

as for those teasers the only thing that couldn't be done in imovie in either trailer was the get lucky motion graphic. i thought both teasers had their own style that worked. but the two plank teaser had that random shot of the airplane wing that was really out of place. it didn't match that part of the song or any of the other shots around it.

Um not really, although that trailer appears to be the most amateur one I've seen this season (skiing aside), they seem to have quite a few paying sponsors and have been around along enough at this point to at least (I hope) have some sort of budget.


Or at least a trust fund.  I guess technically that would be a type of sponsorship?

theres nothing hard about changing clips withthe beat. i didnt see anything AMAZING about the get lucky teasers editing, other than the titles.

Im with the thread creator. I thought that editing wise, this teaser was a fail.

the choice of music was good I think; but damn, the cuts made through the song were soo badly made, you could easily notice the song being cut apart. And the titles, those were kinda akward. the two plank logo at the beggening looked like the level 1 logo in their first movie.And the riders being listed; it looked like the credits in a youtube movie"our family trip skiing soooooooo extreme" And we'll spare talk about the title at the end....i'd rather see titles with less motion and a nice font than....I dunno how to call this.

I think its kind of sad because theyve got sick riders and those shots were amazing... the editing didnt fit the level of riding. And for those who talk about money; theyve got sleds and an heli, according to the teaser. If its true, and with the amount of sponsors they have, an etiting program is a minor cost if you go trhough what they own. ANd then you need someone whos gonna know how to use it properly....

My experience with Two Plank Productions:

This has nothing to do with their trailer, but in 2005, Two Plank was looking for an intern/filmer/editor. I sent in a resume and video resume. They were super stoked and basically welcomed me on board with a few phone calls and some talks with their investors. I told them I was going to be living in New Zealand for the summer of 05, so they said that would be perfect since they would have athletes out there. They also would have a camera sent out so I could have a decent camera to shoot with.

Well, after waiting and using up numerous calling cards and hours at the internet cafe, they never pulled through, they led me on for about 2-3 months saying they had athletes out there when they didn't, and that a camera was being sent, but it actually wasn't. Being the naive 18 year old that I was, they basically screwed me over. Until they give me some sort of apology, which by now I don't give a fuck about, they can go to hell.

I'll never buy their movies and everyone that has asked me about them has heard this story before.

Probably the most un-legit production company I've ever dealt with, do yourself a favor and buy a Level 1 film, that will actually be worth your 30$ you spend on it.

yeah! all im sayin is you see companies like 4bi9, stept and other "am" filmers that do sick stuff and i dont know if they have paying sponsors or not. but like you think if Two Plank was a pro company with paying sponsors they would have a sick teaser, but they dont.

Are you serious? If you pay attention to the trailers while there playing you can tell the difference. Field just has a very creative editor and crew, while the shots are more amazing purely because of quality they are also framed perfectly, with every shot you could tell the man behind the camera was making sure he got "The Shot". It was almost unfair to compair these two together and I'm sure many will agree. Two Plank is an AM film company. They take a hit because the budget doesn't allow them to get certain shots, heli cam for example, but that has nothing to do with the editing. In my opinion Two Plank took a very dry approach to there teaser. I felt like they just took a bunch of shots and mixed them in with time lapses then had the few seconds of sponsor logo's (unfully edited) rolling by. It didnt flow for me, but maybe some people like that style.
As long as the topic is in the air I'd like to bring attention to a comment that Slandis left on a photo. "filming talent not included", very true. Some people think that just getting an expensive HD cam will automatically make you a historic film maker. As a ski film enthusiast myself Its lame to see poorly edited HD footy. Especially when the shots are awfully composed. Any kid can go out and do this, its when its done well that it should be appreciated.

Its unfair to say two plank's editing can be done in imovie, you should have editing something in imovie better to show us. Because getting people together and doing shoots is just as hard as the actual filming and editing.

^yah...just get FCP. its around 800$. and those guys got 3 sleds I think? when starting a filming compagny you may think more about the editing program than the number of sleds youre gonne have. this being said, I highly doubt those guys doesnt have FCP or something like that, and you can clearly see the lack of creativity in the editing.

yeah, no offense to the skiing in two plank's trailer, cause that was rad, but the editing really wasn't very good at all. a lot of the logos were pixelated and cut off on the edges for one, and the trailer as a whole just wasn't very engaging and dragged on, i didn't want to watch it once all the way through and i've seen the get lucky teaser like ten times and i still wanted to watch it again...

ok, well while two plank  isn't the best, I don't see you out there busting your ass, and filming, or even putting up something relatively close.  Movies take alot of work.  Its not just jacking off in I movie and filming an average day in the park.  Until you put up a teaser with the same level of skiers, or anything similar to two planks teaser, then I'll say you can talk shit.  Otherwise....dont talk shit.  Having sleds doesn't mean you have money or a budget in some cases.  Having a sled means you have the motivation to be out there doing what you do.  So until I see you do something relitviely close and actully put your self on the same level you should shut your mouth, and don't compare another teaser, because your the one claiming you can do something similar.  So prove it.

stept and 4bi9 have sleds and sponsors, not "500 sleds" and "3 helis" though, haha
two plank definitely knows how to orgonize trips, get WAY out there in the backcountry, film a lot of people on a lot of stuff, and somehow get a bunch of sponsors, and thats pretty damn hard to do

dude. i just turned 12 on july 17th. you need to calm down sorry if this is your movie company but you guys really need to look around and get a good feel for the ski film companies already making stuff before you jump into making films. oh and i'm pretty good with i movie... but i dont have sleds, helis, and all that stuff here in maryland so i dont bother making a better one. and antoehr thing, how does "having motivation to be out there doing what you do"  mean you have a sled? i have lotsof motivation to ski but dont have a sled. that could be the dumbest things that you wrote, no wonder why your film company isnt doing good

all it takes to make me enjoy a trailer is good music that fits with equally good skiing. As long as the skier lands a trick when the beat hits I'm sold.Oh and yeah I definitely enjoyed the field productions teaser more. When did Tom Wallisch get a Norwegian citizenship? lulz

Its not my company, I actually don't work anywhere currently.  I was just making a point that if your going to sit there and bag on a company, why don't you spare your time, and do it yourself.  Yeah your 12, who cares.  You didn't post an edit of yours to compare to the 2plank teaser.  You put something from a completely different company.  Its like comparing Oranges to a doughnut.  How does a sled have to do with motivation? Well lets see, you save up money and spend it on something to give yourself the ability to be more successful.  Where is this not lacking motivation?  I mean hell I wasn't editing when I was 12 so props to you dude.  I sincerely hope your successful someday!

And your right...my non-existant film company is doing terrible haha.

i agree wth a lot of that, but one thing, "the shot" refers to the filming, not so much the editing, and i definitely hear what you're saying about the HD filming with awful composition.
i just dont agree that there is a super noticable difference purely in editing ability in the trailers for these movies. admittedly the title and sponsors in Two PLanks was poorly done
i was probably a little biased because i saw several Two Plank edits i really really enjoyed (at the beating as a matter of fact), but that was cleared up later in this thread, i dont know who? but apparently they changed editors.
my apologies.
fields was slightly better editing, much better filming and creativity, overall better composition
i still really liked Two Planks with minor exceptions

and the imovie kid was just plain wrong.

I think all these edits come down to one thing: the footage. If the footage isn't as good as another edit with more quality shots, the overall product is always going to be a lot worse than someone who puts out an edit with nicer footage. I think people commonly distinguish better editing, as something that is put together with more epic shots.

At the same time though, there are a ton of AM edits that are being put up with lesser quality footage, but it is edited in a cool interesting way. For one, music has a lot to do with it. If you pick a song in which a lot of people would like, and at least edit it in a way that fits, then your edit has a lot more going for it than someone who picks a lesser liked song. Imovie can go a long way, and I don't think it has a ton to do with how the shots are put together. You can be pretty damn precise in imovie to the point that you can match match shots to music with ease. The only thing it truly lacks is the titles/keyframing/effects/color correction etc. that do increase the overall value, but at the same time, if you have the right footage set to the right music, that stuff matters a hell of a lot less. I think the editing in twoplanks teaser is fine, they did a good job of putting what they had together. That goes the same for Field Productions, they did a good job of putting together what they had too.

I don't think it's fair when people say "I could have done that better". As I said earlier, if you don't have the footage to edit with, then you can't edit. I'm sure a lot of people on this site could edit teasers just as well as some of the big companies, if they had the access to the footage the companies went out and busted there ass to film all winter.
