Question about ipod touch apps

I jst got a touch and it wont let me put apps on it. is it mandatory that I have to buy the 2.0 software to have them on it or is there something I can do that I can get apps on it without spending the 10$ on teh new software? thanks.

yeah i just did it
it takes awhile for it to downlaod and to restore the whole thing but its worth it there are some sweet free apps but all the good ones are like $9.95
