OK this is just a little Survey that I'd like to conduct.
Who thinks that Kicking Horse should have a park?
and if it had a good park (Competitive with Whistler and Mammoth) would that make you want to either visit more often or perhaps move there.
Let me know your thoughts.

If it had a park competitive with Whistler and Mammoth that would be absolutely sick. I've drooled over trail maps for a long time, but since I live an hour and a half from whistler, its been easier to go there in the past. However, with the promise of Big Mountains, Big Snow and a sick park I'd be there in a second.

Kicking Horse with a park could be nice, but from all the stories I've heard, it doesn't need one, as you can apparently build a sick booter anywhere and everywhere. Would I move there? That's too hard to answer.

I love KH the way it is, but obviously if you give people more options, it makes KH that much better.... I would be all for a park, although the whole place is one big natural park!

Kicking horse was sweet last year othere then the fact that the runs below the bowls were sheer ice. U can jump the road that winds to the top in different places and U could build a nice kicker on any of the 3 surrounding open bowls.

Hey rex;
I would hit kicking horse if it had a sick park like whistler. however there are two major problems with kicking horse!
1) opens december 19th waaayyyy to late. they have the snow to open 2-3 weeks earlier!
2) if the winds get super super high and fast the gondola gets shut down which means that there is no way to get to the peak. kicking horse needs a chairlift to go from the bottom lift, to the upper lift. if that were possible then the mountain would not be shut down for any type of wind (cept a tornado). then i would hit kicking horse for sure. but its just not a place I would go to at present.
just fix the lifts, opening day, and park and I'm there

^ part of what we're trying to do is to get the park put under the lower Quad chair (so if it's windy up top you can still ride the park) as well as snowmaking on the lower part of the mtn. (specificly the park runs) that would encourage an earlier opening date for the whole mtn. as well as the ability to build a better park earlier in the season and that would stay open later.

If it had a park like Whistler, then I would go there for sure! I'd go there rather than Whistler to avoid all the crowds

Kicking Horse is such a sweet moutain. Went there for 2 days last year and so much pow and good terrain. With a park at the bottom to round off the run it owuld be sooooooo sick!

With the big mtn terrain Kickcing Horse has and an innovative park on the lower mtn you couldn't go wrong. Inexspensive and uncrowded. It would be cool to fill the lower portion of the hill with slopestyle lines as now they're just a means to get to the chair.

So Golden is close to kicking horse right? If golden can offer something comparable to Whistler town-wise, but not at all the same, perhaps something that seems more 'real' somehow, whatever that means, then KH will see more tourists/people moving there. A park is only a small part of the solution. Whistler isn't whistler only because of the mountains and the parks, it's Whistler because of the town, the people and everything else that goes along with it, both good and bad. Kicking Horse needs what Whistler has, A 'SCENE'. Why not start selling cheap/relatively large condos and 2-3 bedroom homes to people that couldn't afford housing in whistler? Home ownership might be the key to getting KH to go off.

Oh, I forgot...Moving KH to within 2 hours of Vancouver would help. Why you ask? Vancouver='huge' city, international airport, easy access for tourists/vacationing skiers, and tons of shit to do other than skiing. Part of what makes Whistler so good is its proximity to Vancouver.

Hey Rex its Simon from that Calgary rail.
My thoughts on it after living there for the 01-02 season:
Kicking Horse is soooo so good already. I would really like to move back there now. Seeing a park there would be really good too, it would make that place even better. However, part of its allure is almost that it doesnt have a park, it is not so crowded, and the people there, for the most part, know what they are doing on snow. Plus the Lakes park is an hour away, and it WILL be good this year.
If it did have a park, though. I think Kicking Horse could be then compared to Whistler, and this is good. For a good park though, I think they would have to have snowmaking. In a slow circle of events, the town would benefit more and the hill would benefit more. And Golden, as a town, sure could use some benifiting. I actually hope that it would never get as crazy as Whistler either.
A part of me would like KH to stay the way it is, and another part of wants to see the full extent of what the developers have planned, cause I remember it getting crazy.
So what Im trying to say is that im for a park, but If it doesnt happen I wouldnt think any less of KH.
Also, about cheap condos and such. Im pretty sure that they are already fairly expensive there. Like a quarter mil or so for starters, and housing is also going up. The two towns (Golden and Whistler) arent really comparable either. Whistler village was more or less built from the ground up knowing it would be a resort town, while Golden is a logging/industrial town. It is slowly changing though.
Oh yeah. KH/Golden is the best place!

/\ totally agree with u. its a double edged sword. on one hand u want it to stay not to famous becasue it is so good and the fact u can ski a pow day ALL day long becasue of the lack of people.. but on the other hand a part would be so nice to have, hit pow in the morning, try some park later. i would go with a small one, few tables, rails...that way they have a park and u keep it a 'small mountain' feel

i would think that the problem associated with keeping kicking horse so 'private' and secluded would be that not enough people would go there and it would go under. more people going there would obviously be much better for kicking horse.

REX if KH does go thru with your idea I will be there opening day next season! as it stands right now I wont cause when KH opens I'll be heading home. Am I fair in assuming that you;re going to be the head parck tech and the top pro rider for the mountain?
if so congrats, they couldn't have got a more dedicated guy.

i went to kicking horse the year it opened. a park would be nice i guess but its got such a big mountain feel its almost nice not to have it. I'm saying that as a visitor. A lovcal who skis there all the time would probably want a park

I don't think it would take away from the Big Mtn feel of KH (that's the biggest reason I love that mtn). I think it would make use of some of the terrain that gets overlooked. The lower Quad chair seldom gets used and that whole area under it and around it right now are just used as a means to get to the bottom of the Gondola. Whenever I go there and I ski through that area it looks to me like it's just begging for jumps and rails. I think it would give everyone something to do if and when the snow isn't amazing or if visibility is shit. As well as possibly spark some more interest from other people.

I agree, the last 1/3 or 1/4 of that mountain I just bomb.... It's like a massive downhill course.... But it really is a waste! I'd love to be able to hit up a park before getting back on the gondola.... Definetly!

The whole mountain including the un-opened bowls has so much potential that would be awesome if I lived near that Mountain.

its too bad the mountain can expand its terrain base and acerage! apparently oinly red mountain has that ability now. so KH definitely needs to diversify

ye but I was watching 'pontiac world of skiing' and apparently only red mountain has the rights to buy more terraina nd acreage for expansion. while KH may still have some land left to develop its not much, and they're running out of it

old thread i know...
but canmore is getting outta hand...all the fucking housing going up and its so bloody expensive...grrr to that all.
Kicking Horse is by far the best mountian i have ever been to though and if they had any sort of park under that quad it would be soooo sick....like they said above, slash some pow in the bowls, bomb a bit then hit up some park. sounds like the best fucking run ever

I spent a few days there last season, and KH soon became one of my favourite mountains. and that says a lot, considering I've skied almost every single mtn in bc and alberta. so yeah if it had a park, I would def. consider moving there. if not, i would be there as often as possible, since right now i'm in calgary for winters. it would be good for golden if kh got more developed, so I say go for it and I'll be there!

kiking horse is amazing, i almost think they dont need a park cause the terrain is so amazing that u can build some mad back country shit there, plus u get to be a better all around skier hitting all the drops and powder instead of just doing laps in the park, kh is so amazing the way it is right now, i think a park would almost ruin it with a park

I love KH. While I live close to Whis. (Vancouver) I always look forward to going to Kicking Horse wayyy more. If it had a park it would be a big plus. But if they didn't it wouldn't take away from the mountain for me. The things is that they have a TON of room on the lower area of the mountain, and they could use the quad, I think it's called 'catamount' to access the park. It would definately be cool. The pow there is so sick though I don't know how much I would use the park.

ya kh is the shit already for big mountain terrain, but if they got a great park it would really balance the hill out and it would be a great all around package mountain. also the only thing to do on the bottom half of the mountain is ski groomers so it would give you something to do on the bottom. and you could take the gonadola and do an amayzing run up top, then an amayzing park sesh. or just sesh the park from the quad. i think its a great idea!!

skiing the whole mtn top to bottom on the gondola is good now, but with a park it would be absolutely amazing. some of the best big mtn in the world, then a park? who could ask for more that that. plus they have great snow with not many people. and its cool to take the gondola and be able to have much longer runs.
