Karma for posting?

Lately I've been looking at the karma ratings more on NS. before, i just dismissed them and ignored them. So I started thinking about whether or not they are a good or bad feature. I'm still up in the air with my opinion as I think it can hurt people who simply don't post as much, but still have good opinions and give good advice. Anyways, i went into my profile and held my mouse over the "what is karam" (or whatever the wording is), and it said that you can get karma for adding content and posting. Heres where my confusion starts:

Wasn't karma introduced so that instead of people being judged solely on their post count, they could be judge by the quality of their posts? Wasn't this an attempt to prevent post whoring? Well if posting helps up your karma... how does this solve anything? Not trying to hate on anything... just pointing something out.

The number of posts you have is a small metric in the karma system but if you post more often, more people see your posts and can further assign you karma.

Fuck, I forgot to include my idea in the first post, my bad. But I was also thinking.. it might be nice to have some sort of a "karma graph" thats basically a line graph showing your karma trends. I'm interested to know if I've gone up, down, or stayed the same. This also might be helpful to see if a person used to be nice, but turned into a dick or what. Just a thought that might be nice.

enlightening, but rapid posts makes you a post whore, is there a guard to reduce karma if post whoring occurs?

Exactly. post count does not do much for karma. The main karma indicator is actually user ratings, which come from positive posts so that people will feel the need to give you a positive rating.

i have a question too. if people actually need to vote for your karma. what about the people that rarely post or havent logged on in a long time. look at the top 100 karma users. theres a few that never post so how can they be top 100?
also, what does the Xchange number mean?

i seem to remember something about skier stock exchange...but reading this:Members may also directly rate other memberes through the Karma XChange. You may add or remove Karma points for each member through their profile, and directly in the Forums beneath each poster's name. The Karma XChange value takes effect immediately.
-it  doesnt make much sense

I think the xchange number that you see is the average of what other users have voted for that person

The computer doesn't know a good post from a bad post, so it could really be taking away from a user who's actually being helpful, although they're posting at a fast rate.
