How to capture live video

Theres a small chance some fuckers will break into my car tonight so I want to try to capture it on video.
Is there a way I can hook up my Powerbook G4 and a Sony Handycam to record live video onto an external hard drive? Preferably without having to pay for any soft or hard ware?

if you hook up your camera to your computer, set it into the record mode, open imovie (or any other editor that you may have), and click import. it should just take in whatever the camera is seeing, without going to tape

if your trying to post live video as a video stream and feed then your going to need a couple of hardware and software features. if not you can record straight to your computer. External might be pushing it cuz it might not be fast enough
