New deraileur or not?

i just bought a bike from a guy on craigslist--sick bike but it doesn't exactly have the components listed on craigslist (it's a specialized stumpjumper comp im guessing 05 or 06, whichever the m4 frame is from)  it said it would have juicy 5s and sram x9s with x7 shifters-- it has some avids that aren't hydros but are still pretty nice for me, and the drivetrain is mostly shimano lx deores with the xtr rear deraileur.  anyway, my first upgrade would be to get a new rear deraileur but its only problem is that it shifts back and forth between 3 and 4 or 4 and 5 area so im wondering if i need a new one.  I was thinking about just getting a tuneup and going with it becaues its still a sweet bike and I only paid 830 for it and i think i got a deal on it still.  what would you do?

pretty sure xtr is top of the line for shimano... and they may work differently than other derailleurs, ask at a local bike shop about it and definitely try to upgrade all the deore to xt or xtr. xtr is not cheap though so unless you have the money and the need, dont bother

It's probably just from a dry chain or cables.  Try that before you fork over the money for a new one.

XTR deraileur with LX shifters?? could u mean XT? Id believe that.
meanwhile...bring it to a local shop and pay 20$ or whatever to have them tune up ur bike, its really worth it. And if its either XT or XTR, its a legit deraileur, pretty dam bulletproof, so id keep it, just adjust it, but check out the wear on the chain or the cassette as well, because if the guy just put on a new deraileur to sell it but left on the old chain, cassette, and chainrings, u might have gotten fucked.
BTW the mechanical Avid disc brakes are legit too, theyre alot easier to maintain than the Juicy 5s or 7s, and u can manually adjust the pads with the dials.
