Homemade tattoos

i know a guy who gave himself tattoos when he was younger. and he wont tell me how. anybody know how to give yourself a homemade tattoo job?

One of my parents friends has a smiley face on his left forearm.He did it with a heated/sterilised sewing needle and some ink he bought from the tattoo place.

I'll be honest, it looks grimey as fuck. It could work if it was done properly, but this one has run and blurred.
