Why do ski movie trailers try to be so epic?

just curious... hope someone can answer my question because every ski trailer aside from rage's and joystick's tried to be extremely epic while almost every snowboard trailer makes me want to have fun

Because it's more fun to see epic scenery and filming than some handycam video of kids playing around on a little rail.

jesus christ.. let me retry this. i feel like as a whole, the ski movie industry tries to push its movies in a generally more epic direction (i.e. slow motion, slow rock song, time lapses, etc.) while snowboarding movies (which tend to be better) use a variety of songs that fit the style of the riders and movie, and more than often don't use slow motion shots or at least a lot less. i guess it could just be how i feel about the lack of variety in skiing, but i was just hoping someone could explain the motivation behind epic ski trailers.

You must not watch many ski movies. Not every movie does slowmo and slow rock songs like msp.

That's one of the things I don't like about snowboard movies. there will be ONE song that I like and the rest I don't, and as a result, I don't like the movie.

I love when people think that ski movies suck so much when they could never make one even close to as good as any pro movie. Make a better movie than a ski movie then you can "start about your feelings on most ski movie" Fuckin kids.

Making a good movie is 80% planning and paperwork, and 20% creativity.

The question is: Does the process of funding in itself count as part of the production?

Anybody can find money to make a big-budget shitty movie. Likewise, anybody can have tons of creativity but a shitty movie due to lack of funding.

woah chill the fuck out. first, i'm no little kid. second, i've definitely dwelled on my thoughts about ski movies and such for a while. i don't think the movies suck, and i really enjoyed realtime and rage's flick last year, my problem is more with the lack of diversity in skiing, not so much the movie. that last fact is the reason i liked idea so much more than anything else put out. so to respond to your statement no, i can't make a better movie, i just think some more originality and creativity is needed. my other problem is the direction that I feel skiing is moving towards. i think there needs to be less of a focus on spinning extremely fast and doing ridiculous flips and more of a focus on creativity and diversity. just my opinion on that though.

Oh man, this thread is getting out of control. I think theres a standard for ski movies these days that most production companies have to try to reach. But their is a lot of diversity in most ski media these days, there are a lot of companies serving up ski footy shot and chopped in uniquely different ways. (These following assumptions are based on my opinions after seeing there movies) Traditional editing styles like Warren Miller, Clean and smooth style like Level 1, and original and mellow like the movie Idea. Skiing right now has a very extensive list of production companies all out doing the same thing...Toting around a 3 chip or HD cam along side skier's , friends or pro's. Some with helicopters, cable cams, and others with tripod and follow cams. Its all up to the viewer to decide wether or not it was worth there time. Basically some people like epic trailers, when something is epic aren't you intrigued to find out why?
And better yet is it really any less epic than any other trailer. I think a trailer needs to be epic so the viewer remember it. What is a ski movie made for? To remember how huge someone went, or how badly someone got broken off, or even just a token for memories of a killer pow day. Of course overly "epic" trailers happen, but nowadays there are so many trailers you can basically pick out what you want to watch about skiing.

What do you like better, honestly. An EPIC season or a fun season? Trailers somewhat capture the essence of the film crew's season, and if they're epic, everyone is way more stoked than just fun.

yup fuck ski movie's im getting so sick of how serious and gay they are. skiing is a silly fun sport we do for fun, so why does it have to be filmed and edited like a epic battle scene? only ski movie this year thats gonna be good is hot lunch and turbo will be ok cause level 1's usually pretty upbeat.

The Meathead Films trailer for "Head for the Hills" should be up in a week or two and hopefully it changes your mind. Also there are plenty of epic snowboard trailers out there(that's it that's all, Standard Films, etc.) I do agree that the skiing attitude in general can get a little too serious sometimes compared to the general snowboarding attitude.

I honestly don't see why people care about styles of filmmaking so much. When I'm watching a ski movie I want to see stuff that's epic, and if it's epic, there's a 100% chance that what I'm seeing is fun. When I'm watching a movie I'm not going "that's an interesting camera angle", or "well, I don't know how much fun they're having, so I don't know whether I like this or not." I'm going "HOLY FUCK THAT WAS GNARLY!" or " that was just straight steeze." I care about the quality of skiing.
