On the real, this bag can hold enough gear for you to wander around for 2-3 weeks, it is mad inexpensive when purchased at the proper site, and baller as hell.

damn those are pretty raw. do they fit in the overhead with major squeezing? i hate checking my shit in.

i feel you on wheeling is the way to go, but im gonna be lugging it around on busses and shit for a portion of our trip and i would rather have a pack, but for now that bag is at the top of my list. ive been looking at these oakley bags also

1300 cubic inches isn't that much. if youre going on an extended trip you should probably look into some legit backcountry sort of packs. something 4000cu+. try backcountryoutlet.com and look at their larger weekend or weeklong packs. that is unless you pack really really lightly.

yeah i pack overpack alot, but for this trip im gonna see how light i can pack. and i mean its no big deal if i need clothes ill just buy some there and when they get dirty ill give them away or throw them away, because its cheap as hell there.

go to REI and get a real backpack like Deuter, Kelty, North Face

arcteryx, osprey, and maybe mcgreggor make the most durable packs. I'd definitely warn against buying a pack by asolo, after 7 months in nz the zip off bag at the bottom broke off twice and had to be repaired, and at the very end the main zipper crapped out and I had to safety pin it closed for the last three days. i'd definitely recomend going for a larger bag, especially if you're bringing along your laptop. I had all my camera equipment with me in my 70l pack for a 3 1/2 month trip all around se asia, and it was definitely enough. luckily over there all the clothes you'll need are summer stuff with one good rain jacket and a lightweight umbrella so you can pack really light and still be ok.

I have a Mountainsmith backpack and it's gone through hell with me. It's really lightweight and really comfortable. I've had it for about 3 years and taken it to 9 states, 3 or 4 really big backpacking trips (hiking in the Andes for 10 days, a month in Greece so far, a week in Switzerland and a 2 week jaunt around Montana), countless weekend adventures, and across, oh, 15 countries. It's held up SO well. Plus, it comes with a little pack on the front so you can take that on day trips and stick your camelback in it. I highly recommend you look into one.

for backpack traveling, and not straight backpacking, id recommend packs that are large, like a backpacking backpack, but also have the advantage of a smaller satellite pack that can be easily stowed with the main pack and easily detached,, and the option to hide the straps.
Sounds super touristy perhaps, but its legit. Travel snug with both on, then hop off train/boat/whatever, throw the big pack into a locker or hotel, then just use the small one for shit. Removes the need to carry two separate packs. My girlfriend and i use them for traveling and its wicked easy. Big enough for all your shit, but small enough (airline dependent) for carry on.

Id stay away from wheeled shit. It gets really nasty in those not-so-smooth places, which you can encounter anywhere, be it asia, europe, whatever.

having backpacked from canada to argentina AND having a backpack that had a detachable day pack proved a pure lifesaver...

when i bought mine i didnt care if it had one or not, but im sure as hell glad that it did...

i ended up getting a 'black wolf- grand teton' but they only sell them in aus...

anything from a 60 L to a 90 L one is sweet and fitting your life into one of those is as easy as it is steezy...

and dont get anything with wheels unless you plan to go airport to airport and hilton to hilton... because generally those bags suck something chronic and are impossible to move around...

sounds like a sick trip. unless you are bringing camping equipment or other bulky stuff, i would definately say smaller is better. ive "backpacked" (traveled around, by bus, staying in hostels, no camping) around mexico and guatemala, with a 3000 cubic inch pack, and that was honestly too big. next trip i will take a 2000 ci pack, for sure. i have a nice marmot rucksack style pack, meaning no frame at all, and i think it would work great. eagle creek makes alot of travel packs. i think if you go to backcountry.com or sierratradingpost.com, you can probably look at specific travel packs.
