this will probably create some ridiculous unseen controversy, or just turn into another afterbang thread, but what the hell... does style matter that much anymore? when i started free skiing, i was heavily influenced by tanner, pep, liam, vanular, crichton, rainville... skiers whose 5's were their sickest trick, and every trick they threw was oozing with style. now it seems like up coming kids are forgetting about how dope the trick is and just trying to spin and flip the most, and kids on here are going bonkers over it. henitiuk is the one shining exception to this, and its sad he isnt more popular because everything he does is dirty. wallisch is smooth as hell too. dont get me wrong, i dont hate doubles, 12s or 10s, i love 10s...that look good, my point is just that the old mentality of "it doesnt matter what trick you do, as long as it looks dope" is gone and now its only about how many ungrabbed flips you can get off the rail. that is kinda sad because skiing is no where near as pretty anymore, and when all the original skiers are gone, all thats left will be a bunch of hucking.

man i totaly agree with sum of that but i still think style is a big part of skiing. i hope people dont hack u up on this thread cause theres no point but ya like u said sum skiers now just huck shit like cork 10's with no style and think there super good. id rather see a 540 with a ton of style then a 1260 just hucked anyday.

hell man i agree i love the direction hunting yeti is taking things but i cant complain about what level 1 is doing with turbo this year. but yeh i would like to see more styleed out tricks and comps based on style rather than spin to win.

ya totally agree. and it sucks cause comps are completely based on the number of rotations now, which progresses the sport, but doesn't at all show the best skiers and those who have the most style. ^ya all those guys, pollard, pep, andy, benchets, they're taking style back to skiing, and that movie is looking sooo sick

I think as long as the person doing has style it doesn't matter. How 'bout style and technicality? I would just as much like to see a huge steezy cork 5, as a grabbed and stomped switch 12. as long as good style is involved its fun to watch.

true and i agree with most of that and correct me if im wrong, but i see more style today then i did several years ago. sure more people are hucking 10s and 12s now but the majority of them i feel look better now than they did 5 years ago. either way id rather see style than technicality any day

ya good call. i think style is always better than technicality, but some guys can do 10s and 12s that look really steezy. as long as skiing doesn't forget style, its fine to progress the rotations. i just dont ever wanna see the sport have racer spins without grabs.

Charles Gagnier sw octo 1080 is steezy as fuck.
to me it doesnt matter if it's a 180 or a 14 if it's not hucked it dope.

If you can only spin up to 9's but make them look good, good for you.
If you can spin to 14's and make them look good, good for you.

I agree it should be style and technicality winning comps, if you are throwing switch 5 it better have a sick grab/

i havent seen anything recently that beats rainvilles 5 blunts... and to this day, tanners d 10 over the hip is one of the sickest 10s ever... and it was in happy dayz like 5 years ago. there are steezy tricks still being thrown today, but there are more kids only caring about double flips and big spins. thankfully there are also kids like henrik harlut who are throwing steezy ass cab 12s too...

thats why i love style like charley's and the surface boys. its not an automatic zero if you move, flail around a bit. its better than the fucking robot steeze everyone seems to be so down with.

i think its really about how someone views skiing, sport or art, that simple.  there are tons of inspirations in both aspects that i couldn't give enough credit to.

pollard and pep's creativity with everything from skiing to features
schiller reppin the largest shit ever, grabs, amp, spin

now i see tons of kids giving credit to these dudes, but none to the kids who are puttin out the style of skiing. instead its givin to the kids that show a technical, but real bland style.

what would you rather see a fat bitch good in bed, or a hot broad thats smooth in the sack?

I'm all about looking at stylie tricks. I actually don't like to watch doubles really. I appreciate them but I'd much rather watch some stylie corked small spins. Nimbus is definitely leading this right now, and Tanner's company.

I dont think style has left skiing at all. if anything i think its alot more/better than past years. and the part on the spinning and hucking, well pro's dont huck anything really. the jumps they hitting are big enough to where they can do a sw 12 and it still looks sick as hell. i see style in every trick done by pro's.

The thing is... style isnt just spinning slow. Someone above mentioned people working on style rather than hucking stuff. You can't really practice steeze. Style is the way you ski and you shouldnt try hard to make it look a certain way, it should just look good. You can't force style. So yes it would be sick if more skiers threw slower tricks, but thats a little bit different than style. correct me if im wrong

think about if people never progressed and threw bigger spins. for one you would get really sick of doing the same tricks and people would also get really sick of the sport not going anywhere. if it werent for bigger spins/flips this sport wouldnt have gone anywhere

btw, henitiuk is a mogul skier also as am I and I do a lot of comps with him and his two tricks are usually 7 mute and cork 10, so its a little differnet than watchin him in the PBP movies. haha

I agree with you 100%

I have been coaching up at the water ramps this summer and it seems like all the kids care about learning is some hucked double.  How about learning 5,7,9, and even 10 both ways with multiple grabs?  People need to get away from this hucking mentality and get back to the style side of things.  Master your smaller tricks before trying to huck your new roo flip...

mmmm.. talking about throwing in different grabs with bigger spins. how about some switch truck 10's nxt season or true nose 10's. holding it the whole time.
im not surpised about the water ramp scene though. its kinda scary cause more and more kids are gonna be throwing doubles nxt season. meaning more and more hucking. and a more probable cause of serious injuruy.. no goood.

This was a much needed thread. someone should probably sticky it, not to the forums but to every skiers forehead. but in all seriousness I say we just keep pushing for more dubs and trips and when skiing gets into the olympics by merging with aerials we can all laugh together.

Its the same it has always been, just progressing.... There are ppl who used to do sw 10s and everyone was saying there hucked and no style.... and there were ppl who did sw 5s with good style.......

Now... ppl do kangaroo flips and sw duble cork 10s and ppl say there sketch, but there are ppl now that can do sw 10s oozing with style....

so basically were in the same place we were, but advanced the sport more, and its just going to keep on going the direction it is in... maybee with rails, park, or pow, who knows, i was just talking about park btw

pretty soon, ppl will be doing kangaroos and sw dub cork 10s oozing with style and i have no idea what will  be termed "sketchy" then, but something will come along......

pretty valid point but i dont think the tricks we have now have been dialed in enough to move on in the way you are stating.  I know its an argument of opinion but I would personally rather see people dialing in spinning all four direction spinning with tons of grabs before we get into doubles.

i am so happy to see this in this thread coming not only from walker, cuz obviously he knows/has amazing style, but from others too. rainville's blunt 5's a la yearbook/wicked are still my favorite trick to this day. i agree with what most are saying in that we need to recognize that more. don't get me wrong, i'd be stoked if i pulled a dub flip outta my ass but i'd still rather see/do bomb ass fives or switch sevens all day.

I think the area of style has switched. Back when skiing first really started taking off it was all about steezy slowed down 5's and 7s off of hugh booters. Now kids are just hucking as fast as they can, which can be nice. However, the main focus in movies and shoots are now on the style side of urban. Have you ever seen some one huck as hard as they can off a wall or urban kink? (other than tanner, cause he's a crazy bitch.)

To me, a skier with more style is better than a skier who can do huge tricks. Skiing to me is an art form, not a sport. So I look for creativity and style, not amplitude and craziness.
