just about to post this same thing
yes im not the only one
he ski's like a freaking spaz.
Hey buddy how's it going?
It's going pretty good I'm up here at Camp of Champs, came up here first session as a camper to shred and now I'm here as the NS bitch. Pretty much doing the Newschoolers dirty work.
What's your plan for next year? Would you want to be a coach?
I asked Ken and Matt about it, but they didn't seem too into the idea. Matt said I could probably get some kinda job in the lane, but...
*Penis shaped baloon he was holding exploded in his hands*
..Holy shit! I think it'll be a good idea, so I'll definitely pick up an application and fill it out.
If not do you think you'll be back here next year?
Yeah for sure, Camp of Champions is the best camp I've ever skied, it's a winter quality park during the summer. Not to mention they have the best coaches and staff.
What do you like the most about it?
The park and the coaches. Cody Barnhill is super cool and a really nice guy. Wiley was my coach for while and his style is super smooth and was a great coach. The park is amazing, the jump line is 55', 65', 80' and flows really well so I've just been having so much fun on it.
What's your plan for next week?
I'm heading to France for a CoreUPT exhibition, where they'll be demoing their skis and introducing their team to everyone.
Nice is that your first time going up to France?
No I went up about a month ago to meet everyone and finalize my contract. It was just sort of an introduction, got to test the skis and meet the people behind the scenes.
How was your season this year?
This season was definitely the best year I've had, I feel like I did the most this year. I did a couple of comps, I finished 11th at the North American Open slopestyle and got 13th in pipe. Nothing too great but I was still happy. I also got a ton of filming done.
With who?
Rage Films for about a month and half or so, then Stept Productions in Breck for a while and then some filming at COC this summer.
Are you stoked on the footage? Should we be expecting two full segments?
I'm not too sure about Stept, but I got a lot of shots with Rage that I'm really stoked on and I think I will be able to put together a pretty decent segment.
Can you give us a sneak peak at what to expect?
Doubles and stuff, switch dub cork 10, some kangs, I think Rage really helped out with everything this year, especially with getting some much needed recognition. I got some flips off of rails that I'm stoked on too. Such is Life, check it out. Rage Films baby.
So where did you come from? Who's Gus Kenworthy?
Well I'm 16 years old, I'm from Telluride Colorado. Started with moguls competitively, loved them for the jumps and I remember being super stoked on learning 360 iron crosses. Then I just grew away from the mogul side of things and realized I liked jumps more. So I moved into the terrain park and here I am now.
Well looks like it worked out for you, how'd the CoreUPT deal come together?
I think I'd have to give 100% credit to NS. From uploading edits, getting comments and feedback, kids sending me messages and so on. I put my promo video on Zapiks first, and I guess Zapiks is a pretty big sports site in France. It ended up being the number one rated video which I had no idea about. Turns out they found the video, got my contact info and got in touch with me. Pretty stoked on how it all worked out.
I've noticed you spend a lot of time on NS, is this true?
Yeah I'm kind of a Newschoolers whore. I'm pretty much logged on every day. I check out all the threads in Ski Gabber and sometimes browse Non Ski Gabber, check out all the top rated pictures and videos and make sure I leave a useful comment. I love the community and feedback feel of the site, there definitely isn't a website that compares.
Do you get a lot of feedback from the members?
Yeah for sure, my "A Day in the Park" edit had a lot of comments and the same thing with my JOSS video. I had a lot of comments on the fact that I did not have a lot of rightside spinning, so I defintely took that into consideration and the next time I went out and just worked on rightside. I'm really excited to hear what members have to say, but there is a difference between criticism and blatant hating.
That being said, do you have a least favorite member?
Evan Heath (eheath, pussyfooter, buttsecks).
Yeah I agree, that guy is a tool. A lot of people have been saying you might be the next Tom Wallisch, what do you have to say about that?
He aint got shit on me! Haha, nah I'm fully kidding. I think he's got the most positive feedback on NS, and he's probably the most loved skier on Newschoolers. I think he's definitely the best rail skier in the industry today since he has every trick dialed super smooth with great style. I'd be honored to take his place but I don't really see that happening anytime soon.
Tell me about your JOSS video.
I found my first edit got me some good exposure so I decided to just send it in not knowing what kind of response I'd get. Jon made a thread on NS saying he was deciding between Matt Margetts, Bobby Brown and I, but I think it was hard for Jon to invite someone on such short notice so he chose Henrik Harlaut and Oscar Sherlin since they live there. Oh and not to mention they slay.
Do you plan on entering next year?
I'm gonna try if I get an invite, it's defintely one of my biggest goals. I really want to compete in the X-Games also.
Other plans?
I want to get a lot more urban footage. There's not much in Telluride and we've pretty much done them all already. Next year I plan on doing a few trips with Rage and Stept and maybe even go over to Europe with Field Productions, I'm really hoping that trip works out. I also plan on doing more comps next year like Nippon, Icer, King of Style, Freestyle.ch and then obviously the big North American comps like Big Bear, Aspen, US Open, North American Open and a few others.
You're 16, how's traveling and competing conflict with academics?
Well I think I had the worst attendance in the whole class so next year I'll be finishing grade 11 and 12 online so it doesn't interfere with skiing.
Is your main focus on skiing or school at this point?
Skiing, I want to make things happen so that I can survive in the ski industry. If not then i'll probably just go to CU.
Do you have a favorite ski movie or segment?
1242 was one of my favorites for a while, Jon and Pep's sections...X=10 is definitely my favorite of all time. Everyone just kills it in that movie, TJ, Peter, Anthony, and Dumont had such banger sections.
Who are you stoked on these days?
TJ Schiller is my favorite skier, I love what he's doing with the sport. He's just super smooth and sick, it's unfortunate he didn't get to ski much last year.
Have you met him before?
No I haven't, well I met him at Sushi Village but I don't think he actually knows who I am. Ian Cosco is pretty fucking ridiculous also with his doubles in the bc, pretzels on urbans, just straight gnarly shit. He's gonna have one of the sickest, dopest segments of the year, and I think it will be really well received.
What trip did you enjoy the most?
Fun times were had at the Rage shoots, we had one at Stevens Pass with a couple transfer rails which we sessioned for a few hours or so. I got a lot of shots and had a great time so it was definitely enjoyable.
What's your favorite trick?
Pretzels, they're just super fun to do.
Any new baller tricks you plan on trying?
Well I just got switch double corks which I want to improve with some more unique grabs. Switch right 10 is another I want to learn, I have landed them before but they were super sketched out. Maybe a rightside double like a kang or something.
No one is really doing those yet.
Haha, yeah I'm not either, just a future goal.
Shout outs?
All my friends back home in the ghetto, Mom and Dad, George, all my sponsor's: CoreUPT, Smith Optics, Telluride Sports, Skullcandy, DVLP Clothing, Switch Gloves.
Peace out and stay tuned for a new edit any day now...
No pictures in there, but it has the whole interview.
