PM system

I think overall it works well but i had two thoughts to make it alot better.


For one rather than just having one massive inbox of messages i was thinking sort it kinda like facebook. (I know everyone doesnt like facebook but the system works well.) That way its sorted by conversations/topics so basically ever subject or even every message with a certain person can be viewed in a separate split really easily.
It would look sorta like this

Also it would be nice to have a separate place for "saved messages" ie messages that you want to look at later that had useful information (like the one i have in my inbox about jiberish sizing)


just my two cents other people throw their ideas in here too.

Now, before you read this, keep in mind that I am not bashing you or your idea.




With that said, I'm flat out sick and tired of all these "Let's make NS into Facebook/myspace!" ideas.

While all of these ideas are convenient, most of them are completely unnecessary. Like this one. People have gone almost 10 years without sorted PM boxes, and stuff like that.

Would I think that they would improve the site? No doubt. But I don't want Faceschoolers - Skiing's Online Social Networking Community.


Besides, I spend enough time on Facebook. I need a little variety.

^^^   think of these suggested improvements as an optional  feature.  Don't use it if you don't like it.


Like it or not, NS is a network of skiers, therefore it is also a social network.  Any enhancement that brings and keeps users online longer is good for the site.  It is good for the site because the more traffic, the longer a user stays on the site, the more valuable this site is to advertisers...   ewwwwww   advertisers right? 

These requests are coming in more and more frequently. I think myface stuff is a good idea that we ride the tide and try and do our own variation of it!

i agree and i dont want it to turn into ZOMGZ FACEBOOK PICTURES, but i think that some of the technical aspects of it could be used to make the site even smoother and easier to use. because right now it takes a loooong ass time for me to find old PM's and it would make things alot easier

I don't think we should straight up copy the idea but def like use the myface template as a spring board and then throw your own lil NS twist on things

yeah but say i have a message with a person from a month ago. i have to scroll past 3000 pms that i had with other ppl after that to get to the one i wanted. i want each person to be compressed down, rather than showing the whole convo

That's what I'm saying. Go to one of your online friends profiles, and next to where you would have clicked to "make friend" there's "View message exchange" and it shows only your two's conversation.

I don't think we'll ever go completely that direction. Its not in our best interest to rip off facebook too much, because we'd inevitably do it not as well as they do and then if the two sites are the same why not just stay on facebook.

You can see this with lots of sites that seek to rip off ideas from popular websites... if you aren't facebook, don't try to be it.

Stuff like PM sorting is awesome. I'd also really love to have image tagging, and a slew of other features that are just plain handy. It really all just comes down to available coding time, so we take all the best ideas and then do what we can.

I think an overhaul of the messaging system would be amazing, but its not in the cards for this winter... too many other cool things going on. :)

I like the delete/save message idea. I dont have an account at facebook and I dont want NS looking like facebook.

yeah that i would really appreciate and i dont think it would be THAT hard to code in. just a little saved messages box for important stuff you use multiple times

I like the message system the way it is. One feature I think should be added is a "Save Message" for the purpose of dealing with people who aren't your "friends". Maybe you're doing a sale, or have a question about their home mountain, a pair of skis, etc. If you forget their user name, finding that lost message is not so easy.
