maybe the companies pay the magazine to put in a good review i am not sure though

thats the only thing i was thinking, i dont know its just gay they waste all that space with their huge annual review and they dont even give you a review you can use. At least skiing magazine has the little pluses and minuses about the skis. Freeskier just sucks

Ski Fast and Stay Away From the Trees

Exactly what the one dude said the reviews seemed to be a joke, i mean come on every ski they review cant be awesome. Doesnt anyone else feel this way?? I read the reviews on all the skis and i cant tell you one thing about all the skis other than they all kick ass and are awesome at park if thats what they are designed for but lack at big mtn or vice versa.

pretty much, all the major ski companies have making skis down by now, its not like 20-30 years ago when you could end up with a total piece of shit. Now if you buy from a major company, your skis are pretty much going to rip... if you can

but still certain skis suck at certain aspects and freeskier doesnt mention that. Pretty much every review is the same. If the ski is a park ski then they say 'this ski does well in park but not so well all mtn.' And if its a big mtn ski they say 'awesome all over the mountain but a little big to use in the park.' Its just gay, and so is freeskier.

it's also cheaper to print a review issue if you dont actually test the ski and just print whatever the manufacturer has on their website.

I thought the Oct. SKIING had a good comparison style review (well as far as mag ski reviews come) No flippy spinny sticks though.

Example for Volant Machete Sin 'Thanks to the skirt cap construction which eliminates a lot of sidewall steel, the Sin still busts crud without the heft of Volants of days past. An 81-mm platform is the narrowest in the category, which means you'll be powering through not floating on, the real deep stuff. GRIPES: Despite its thin waist, it's not quick edge to edge. PROPS: A predictable, powerful tool for someone venturing off-piste for the first time. TESTER'S Take: 'There's not a scary bone in this ski.' -scotty ewing.

I also like how they post the bios of all the testers so you can compare to someone somewhat like you. I dont think you can expect much more than that seeing how many skis there are to review.

I An interesting add to a magazine would be a more in-depth gear review on say two or three skis every issue. An approach more in the likes of a car mag as opposed to a consumer reports style brief list of every single product out there.

^ that would be a good idea, but the testers would probably not have enough time to thoroughly (sp?) test all the skis being released. Think about how many skis are on the market every year, then picture giving them 3 days on snow, and a couple days to write a review for each ski, it just isn't really plausible. People (general Consumer market) need as much info on skis as quickly as possible, since they often base their purchases on these reviews, which kinda leads to the reviews that are typically published.

The other thing to consider is that everyone skis differently, and feels different things, so more general input about a ski will give you a better overall picture (kinda like the law of averages - throw out the top and bottom and most likely you answer is in the middle).

And another thing to consider is that most people buying skis will read these reviews, and have very little other knowledge when they go to buy their new equiptment, they often base their purchases solely on the recomendations of a shop (which often times can be biased).

So look at it from a business perspective, why would a ski company pay a magazine more money to thoroughly review a ski if this thorough review is not really going to improve/boost sales. The sad truth is that the educated, knowledgable skiers kinda get the shaft in terms of rewiews.

never forget that mags make money by selling advertising, so not many are going to say too many bad things about a ski, and burn the as revenue bridge,, especially the big guys, K2 ect

ski canada has great reviews but they don't review the kinds of skis i'd buy.

ski press had some decent reviews including super fats and fat twins

What we really need to help us decide on skis is more accessible demo programs. Maybe its easy to demo a ski in some other places but where I ski there is nothing available. So most of the time all I have to go by is other's opinions. skiing mag used to review twin tips the same as they do the normal skis a coupla years ago. To be helpful the reviews need to be more specific. They generally say what a ski is good at but don't compare them at all or go into specific types of terrain. I think that's what they need to do. But then taht brings in the issues of a a person's skiing style and what they like in a ski.

anyone notice in ski magazine, atomic, elan, and dynastar were almost always top 3 in every category? i cant personally comment on elan, cause i havent skied em, but atomic's stuff, to me, feels kinda cheaply made, at least what i have skied on, but dynastar is definately at the top of the game, so yeah, anyone think there is a little bit of payin off the magazine goin on here?
