Charles Bouileau, Phil (a.k.a. “Not Another Phil,”) Benjamin and the Pléhouse crew wanted White Shine to have a similar feel to their Iceland segment in last year’s Red Tape, and they were largely successful. The eclectic soundtrack is refreshing, with no underground hip-hop or pop-punk. Best of all, you’ll finally get a chance to watch J.F. Houle own every jump, rail, and line he picks. Pléhouse also relays the electric moments leading up to and after Charles Gagnier’s surprising X Games Slopestyle win. Plehouse returned to their Canadian roots with a lengthy segment featuring the rails and parks in Quebec. JP Auclair, Iannick B, Josh Bibby, Phils Belanger and Larose, and D-Structure ams lay down solid and consistent performances. Thomas Rinfret gets creative with junk yard cars and steel for some junk jibbing, an idea that probably sounded better than it turned out on film. White Shine really scores big for their production quality. Consistent 16mm film use provides a high quality matched by very artistic cinematography and production. (Bonus: Shining the White Shine DVD featuring behind-closed-doors at SIA and the trials of producing a ski film.
Don't forget Lolo's seggy in Skimatic. Plehouse's departure is definitely sad, but there's more to life than just making ski movies for some people - hard to imagine eh?
