Vista and such

so im sure a bunch of kids who just graduated got laptops or whatever and they came with shit ass vista. i know i did. i know how to get xp on it and everything but i dont really know what the deal with drivers is, where i can get them and what i need? i dont want to get xp all installed and not have anything work.



and yeah sure i should have got a mac, wasnt my choice. thanks.

i just got a new comp and it had xp. nice.
but i have no idea how to put xp on it, i would think you have to get a crack to get a copy of xp, or pay like $100 and buy it

install XP and find out what drivers you need. If certain hardware isn't working then you will need a driver for it. You can get them off the disks that came with your comp or you can find them online.

Yep, you'll need new drivers. Install XP, go the website of the company that made your laptop, find their Drivers page, and punch in your serial number or whatever it is they ask for to figure out which computer you own. It SHOULD bring you to a page with all the drivers you need for your laptop, and then just select XP instead of Vista. Drivers worked across operating systems for awhile but for some gay ass reason the Vista and XP ones are different. Honestly though, try Vista out, I thought I'd hate it and I've grown to love it.

You'll also be able to tell if something is working or not by right clicking the my computer icon and click properties. Click hardware and then go to device manager. You can then go through that list. Anything that has a yellow question mark, or an x through it, or a red circle and a line through it means that it isn't working properly and chances are it will need an updated driver.

Who in their right mind would buy a computer right after school?  If it is a graduation present, it would most likely be used for college, which is 3 months away, and its best to wait because...

-Back to school sales are good for laptops, if you are getting a desktop, build it

-Technology is advancing every day

Personally, im sitting on the egg that is the Nvidia 200 series, as well other new things to come out. Right before school starts, I will either be able to buy the latest and greatest, or be able to buy todays greatest at a later time for a much cheaper price.

Dude..just get some more ram. Vista is good and all but is a lot for a pc to manage. More ram is like $90. If your really cheap you can just buy like a 2Gb thumb drive and use it as extra ram.

hahahahah omg no way. im in the same boat nick. yea vista is a shit boat and to get xp working is going to be a big pain in your ass. let us all know what model computer u got. im gonna guess that u got a dell laptop cuz there the cheapest to buy and no parents liek spoling their kids cuz then they wont have any cash for booz. so anways iv been working on getting all the drivers togeather so i can change my comp to xp too.

i got a dell inspiron 1525. apparently its a super pain in the ass getting it to work with xp or it just seems that way unless u have soemone showing u how to do it. i googled the problem and obviously it tells me the answer cuz google knows all but basicly the computer is made to work with vista and soem of the drivers have problmes and even with all the recomended drivers you are gona need to do some more work. with my computer there is somethign about installing some webcam driver befor i install xp because if the home button next tot he power is pressed it will fuck up your computer.... who knows.

but tell us your computer model and google the model and changing it to xp it should bring u to a geek forum..... if u have the same comp as me wich may be possiable check this shit out

If your laptop has enough power, Vista will run fine.

If not, XP is a much better choice and the driver situation is explained above.

theres no need to switch really, is there? cuz when i got my laptop for a grad present, i got so frustrated with vista, i was like fuck it, i want xp, all you need to do is find your way around vista, its different, but managable

my hp laptop came with vista and i downgraded to xp. most people will reccomended having a dual boot setup, where you can boot into either vista or windows, problem is it takes up an extra 5 gigs on your hd. so i just did only xp, i downloaded all the drivers from HP's website before i did it, and everything went smoothly until i installed xp and the cd key i had didnt work, so i had no OS on my laptop for a bout a week until i got a legit copy of xp, and now it works fine. it was definitely a smart choice, my laptop runs soooo much smoother with xp. theres a shit ton of guides on the net to walk you through it, thats what i used.

Good thing you don't need to upgrade shit. I've owned my laptop for two years and aside from an obnoxious red line that runs down the middle of my screen it still tears ass. The only thing you need a good computer for is h-core gamin' and movie editing, if all you're doing is watching ski edits, jacking it to some pr0n, browsing NS and doing school shit it doesn't make a damn bit of difference.

dude wtf? thumb drive and ram have nothing to do with eachother. 2gb thumb drive is actaully harddrive space. RAM actually speeds up your computer performance and has no space.

a few years ago there were huge changes, but now it is slight minor changes to a desktop or laptop. not big enough to buy brand new

wow all the people saying vista is fine if your comp can handle don't know shit about computers...n00bs. if you can, use xp. if you have no choice but to run vista, here are some tips:
1. sideline your sidebar - useless junk that looks flashy but taxes your processor, even if you are running a intel quad-core extreme 2
2. disable the spastic piece of shit known as User Account Control. it will save you countless hours of verifying, reverifying, and assuring vista that yes, you really do want to install that program
3. try disabling superfetch via the services console
4. desktop search: vista's indexing service will hog your system at the most inopportune time possible. riight-click on your hard drive in windows explorer and uncheck "index this drive for faster searching."
5. update to service pack 1, this should cure a slew of security and reliability issues
vista is great for people who like ford mustangs: sure it looks flashy, but under the hood it's really just a pile of shit

If you buy a computer from Dell or some shit, and use the default copy of Vista, then yes. You're right. Same with XP and every other Windows OS before it. Only difference is Vista comes with even more shit. If you know how to disable all the shit and streamline your copy (which isn't even that hard, a lot of programs will do it with only a few clicks) then it's great. I used to be a Vista hater like yourself and now that I have it, I realize that just like all the old OS's, it's fine once you strip it down. Everything runs faster now that I have Vista.

XP can't run DX10, so I'm never going to use it.  And, like said before, after you disable the useless shit it gets the job done very well.  I like how it handles errors too, something about bringing even more processes away from the kernel, so it doesn't lock up and crash like on XP.

I use Vista when I have to, which is only when i'm playing Games for Windows, which don't work on XP. I have stripped mine down as much as possible, had to hack some stuff to do it too. The problem is that I'm a gamer, and when it comes to gaming there are absolutely no improvements with Vista. So far no games that take advantage of DX10 have come out, and none are expected to for at least 5 years. Also, games run at about half the frames per second they do on XP, and when I benchmark using 3DMark06, Vista is always slower than XP. Vista's okay for people who are only doing desktop work in their internet browser or something like that. But most of the gaming community hasn't switched over to Vista yet due to the insurmountable drawbacks (ex. Crysis running at a disgusting rate of 17 fps).
Vista was released 3 years earlier than it should have been.
