I was taking to my future roomate and found out he skis and I asked him what type of skiing he did he only responded back with "i ski everything".

Decipher it for me, he's not a very good talker and he doesnt seem to be technology savvy.

He sounds like a gaper claimer to me.

from experience, unless they specify, they tend to be a gaper/weekend warrior (there's a lot of grey area between the two).  ask how often they go and if they like the park... that ought to give you some idea, too.

um, sometimes it's worse to have a gaper roommate than a roommate who doesn't ski at all.  just because they don't ski doesn't mean they'll rat out your parties or whatever... that was a fucking retarded statement.

ask him what is fav ski movie is....that should give you some insight....he is either gonna say, i didnt know there are ski movies, anything by warren miller, or some sweet newschool movie.

who cares if he is a gaper, or weekend warrior or anything like that, you dont even know him yet, just be happy you have someone to ski with and maybe split gas to the slopes with.... my room mate from the dorms last year was a pretty OK snowborder (on a good day) and i always had fun... some people take being a "newschooler" so seriously

i care because i want someone to progress with.  I just dont want to stick to the diamond runs over and over without ever hitting up the park or backcountry.  How am i supposed to progress if I'm stuck with a boring gaper who does nothing but groomers.  I've done so many groomed runs with my friends around me, im like the only one in my group of "gaper" friends that actually want to progress more than just hitting up the groomers constantly.  I get sooo bored of it so fast, its not funny.

Dude, if your roomate skis, that's rad as hell. Don't worry about progressing with him or whatever, you can meet other skiers at schooly. If he's a cool guy, you'll wanna shred with him. If he's lame, you won't anyway, even if he's a dope as hell rider. You're going to uni for the first time, you're going to have a great time if you go in with a good attitude.

i think he prolly just meant about having common ground. cuz i like to ski everything too. doesnt mean im a gaper, just means i hit the slopes it full force hollerrrr. but fersure having a gaper could be worst case scenario, getting stuck skiing with weakass roommates in college is the worst shit ever man, u will not find a bigger waste of time in college, unless it's like.... COMMUNICATIONS, i had to endure tough winters of skiing with my roommates in montana that sucked nuts. u must get to the bottom of this gaper suspicion. and if he is, houssssinggg swiitttchhhh lol. nah thats too mean. either means he's pretty good and can keep up, or he's so laxidazical that he doesnt even know what hes doing and he prolly crosses tips and faceplants a lot

do u know where he's from? that says a lot about the chances hes a decent skier. or his name, I PROBABLY KNOW HIM.

worrying about progressing is dumb unless you plan to get sponsored and go pro or if you are going to a comp you really want to win

if you are just doing it because its fun, then focus on having fun and progression WILL COME

i'll be moving across country knowing nobody at all.


And I worry about progressing because I ike to push myself to be better, I don't settle by being ok or good.  I want to be better and I have more fun progressing myself than just being a constant ok skier.  Besides groomers are no fun.

shits definitely not as challanging when you're the best skier in the group and no one will follow u where u wanna go. it's not that simple to just be able to tell your roommate that sucks at skiing that you don't care to ski with him, but other people instead, when you live together in bascally what is 120 square feet. best case is to just not worry about it, go there and get a feel for what he's like. cuz even if he sucks, but is a chill kid, likes the sport hella, and doesn't talk himself up about shit he can't do (THAT SHITS FUCKIN ANNOYING) before the snow falls, then shit, having someone that doesnt mind looking at ski posters ,thats awesome, and u don't even know NOW how well that'll help the living situation to be able to look at your ski posters and be like oh my roommate also likes this shit too, so im not invading his space.  be glad you at least got a skier lol, that more common ground than most universities are capable of giving to people that get assigned together.

Yea, don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna be all like "ew, I don't want to ski with your lame ass".  It's just more of frustration because I've never got to be around with good skiers/boarders who actualy want to push themselves more and their love for their sport.   I was always the odd man out.

My roommate for next year is an awesome snowboarder, we almost always go to the hill together. You could be in for some luck.

trust me bro, if you're going to college in anywhere thats even remotely a skier friendly area, theres gonna be a shit ton of people in your same position probably that are better than you (just how the world works) that are gonna be looking for kids to ski with, i did it for months last year. i bet you know how to spot a skier. WHERE ARE U SCHOOLING

i moved from NY to utah and found friends to ski with, i suggest bring a lot of weed and smoke up with everyone within the first month, thats what i did and know most of the kids in my school

dude...if your roommate is a gaper...then you have the job or converting him into a newschooler...my neighbor in res was a skier...i sold him some of my old lines, got him hooked up with some legit clothing, and now he's better than me in the park

1. stop saying "progress"
2. join the ski team, thats what i did at wsu and everyone is super cool and fun and almost everyone on the team has twins and likes to ski park
3. walk around your floor, you will meet tons of people in colorado of all places that ski, trust me it wont be hard
4. just have fun man college will be the most fun time of your life and you will never want to leave.

You never know, even if he isn't into the whole park scene, maybe you can get him into it like someone else above said.  I did that with someone I met at school.  He was just stoked to lap the park and go off jumps.    There are a lot of claimers that say they "ski a lot" or can go down a "double black diamond", but few are actually dedicated as a lot of people on this site. 

Good luck, I didn't know anyone when I went to college either.  It sucked for about the first 10 minutes, then it's pretty much the best thing for the next 4 years as long as you are somewhat social which it seems like you are.

yea im just kind of nervous because I come from an area where skiing/snowboarding is not that hot and I never really realized that skiing/boarding culture out there is huge.  All you guys kind of calmed me down because I was starting to get worried that I wouldnt know anyone that hits up the mountains but that's not the case anymore.   Im just not used to it yet.

use it to your advantage. if you're fuckin hot shit and he's not, he'll want to follow you around in the park and suck up to you, so your gnarly park friends will think he's cool. then, give him a camera, tell him how to work it, and you got yourself a private cameraman who will go everywhere with you to remain cool. it'll help you pick up the chicks too, cos they'll think youre famous. of course, you have to be hot shit like me to pull this aproach off...
