Premiere problem with HD footy?

Hi,
Sorry if this has been covered in another thread!

I want to import 2 pieces of footage that were shot on an HD camera, into my current project. The clips are .avi (according to the properties), but say Video Clip when you hover the mouse over them. When I import them to premiere, it says "unsupported format or damaged file." This i dont understand as the clips play in Media Player just fine.

Can anyone help me with what i should do to make it possible to import these files. I heard someone mention 'downgrading' the footage??

the only thing i can think of is when you first create a project, make sure you select the option for hd or hdv

maybe it has a weird codec, but is still an avi, and premier cant read it? im not sure. if its your cam then try capturing it with premier, or you could just try to convert the video file into something premier will take (just try to not loose any quality when converting)

sorry for the not massively specific info. the camera is a jvc hd handycam that belongs to my mate, i have never used it. i have premiere pro cs3, and have tried all the hd settings and it still says unsupported format or damaged file. is there any way of converting it to standard def.? thanks for all the help, keep the suggestions coming.

i managed to get 1 clip to work by putting it into moviemaker then publishing it. the new file is worse quality, but at least it works. the other 2 r stiil givin me problems.

sounds like you transferred to the computer then tried to import into Premier. Try capturing directly from the camera into Premier.

sorry, i guess i should be clearer, the camera belongs to a friend of mine who is in no way reachable as he is another country!
