Omg parents bumming me out!

so my parents registered me a momentum and now their getting second thoughts.  they say they keep hearing things about skiers dying and getting paralyzed and stuff as if it happens all the time.  My mom keeps telling me that she doesnt want to spend so much money and risk me "coming back in a wheel chair"  Anyways im super bummed i need help convinceing them that im not gonna die.  im so stoked on this camp...any input would be sick!

major bummer right there. tell her that the people who get hurt are genearlly not experianced, or are hitting features that are very poorly made. you will be in the hands of professional coaches and professional park staff, ensuring that everything is safe, and that you will not do something that you shouldnt be trying.

what session are you going to? im gonna go to the june 25-july 3 one and im stoked

well, it's true there's serious risk involved and your parents care about you.. but you can't live in a padded box forever. I've told my parents it's not worth living for me if I can't take risks in skiing and surfing. If I can't do what I love on the chances I have to do so, then why even be alive at all? Maybe they'll respond to that.. or maybe they'll think you wanna kill yourself. Hopefully not, cause I don't.. just saying skiing is important to me.

Tell her its the people that ar uneducated on the jumping ways that get hurt and if you go to the camp they teach you how to fall and how to avoid injuries off of jumps its safer to go their and learn then to throw down wherever you feel

my parents used to be like that then they saw me get hurt this season and get back on skis as fast as i could and stuff like that and then they gave up on the nagging

When I started getting into sports and racing bikes and such, it took a fair bit of convincing, but the only that worked for me was showing them that I was a responsible person.  Yes, skiing is dangerous, but you wear a helmet, ride with buddies who will look out for you, keep a phone in your pocket... etc.  Show them you know what the risks are and you're taking precautions.

Refuse to drive because it is WAY more likely to get killed in an accident then skiing. You may get a broken bone skiing, but you have to fuck up bad to die.

Tell them you can do the same thing skiing every day? Kind of stupid they let you ski all winter but not in the summer, its the same risk.

OR if you want something really sobering:


  • The lifetime odds of dying from an injury for a person born in 2004 were 1 in 23.

    • Face it, you are going to die, just not on the slopes. Highly unlikely comparitively to all the other risks out there.

    ive been going to momentum the past 3 summers and barely anyone gets hurt, i mean your obviously going to fall if you try stuff and theres always the chance of an injury at any time that your skiing. They require helmets which alot of other camps do not. Trennon yelled at a kid last year for hitting one of the small jumps without a helmet.

    If they want you to be safe, going to camp is the smartest thing they can do. Not only will you get to practice, but you'll have a coach there too to help you be safe. Soft summer slush is the safest snow condition to learn things into, save powder. You can also use water ramps there too, which are the safest way to get comfortable with new tricks.

    Additionally, you'll meet lots of friends, get to ski during the summer, and have a blast.

    If you drop this on them, they have no case for their worries.

    gah!!! my dad is just like that and it is such abummer. it can be a real downer when your parents arent very supportive of something you love so much. ...and honestly...people die every day of otehr things.

    you should tell your parents that you "know your limits, doont go off the big big jumps, and are conservative" haha thatll work haha...and tell them you wear buttpads and kneepads and a helmet. seriously...that usually works for me haha...convince them how much it means to you and go about it with a good argument and dont wine. k good luck! :)

    my parents are being kinda like that too.
    i have my exams right now (which im actually studying a shitload for), and they say if i dont get good marks, which to them is like above 90, then i cant go to mhssc. like they wont even let me pay for myslef entirely and go. gahh

    My Dad used to be britains best big moutain slalom skiier( I agree that hardly any ritish people ski so he wasnt exactly on par with the pros) and knows the risks of skiing, so he lets me do whatever th hell i want on snow because hes had some big wipeouts at like 80 kph on skis before.
