Airlines charging $100 for ski bags

U.S. Airways and I am pretty sure United are charging $100 for ski bags each way now. I am sure others are too.

So all you overprivileged cocksmokers going to summer camp better not be complaining in a month about the charge when you fly out west. It's only a 8% increase on your $2500 tab, so I know you can afford it.
Also if you booked your ticket before they instituted the changes then you shouldn't have to pay the charge.

If you work rentals at a destination resort next year it will be even busier and shittier for you. Have fun.

Costs are only going to keep going up as the price for oil goes up. So instead of charging more for your ticket the airlines are charging more for your bags and stuff like that.

delta? jet blue? and I'm sure people that can afford to fly places to ski won't mind the extra charge. When  I flew to utah in march there was no charge with delta.

I don't care because my mommy love me and will pay 100 dollars to ship my ski bag. I think if I were going somewhere for a long time I would get UPS or fedex to ship all my stuff.

I am all about doing your own thing. If that's snowblading, great. Go out and have fun.

We are all aware that your snowblades don't require a large bag. And I'm glad you don't have to pay these charges.

However, I would much rather pay the money and be on larger skis when the powder comes. Plain and simple. If you don't like hate on you for snowblading, which I admit is prejudiced and pointless, then the most hypocritical thing you could do is turn around and send it back.

i flew northwest and continental to France and continental and delta back to salt lake in january and they didn't charge extra for my skiiii bag.

How am I hating by calling people going to camp overprivileged? That is factual. I went to COC back in 1999 when it was less than 1/3 of the current price and the exchange rate was at 0.68 and I was overprivileged then. It just seems retarded to spend that much for 6 days of skiing when you could live at any mountain in the US for 2 months living comfortably or 3 months living like a dirt bag.

when i went to camp i worked for every cent of the trip. first time out west from the east coast. i would call that determined not overpriveledged.

it's not all the price of oil. southwest posted profits while oil prices shot up. i think they're still doing pretty well. major airline operations are piss poor and hemorrhage cash.

They would charge for some oversized luggage like surfboards. But I don't think they charged for things like skis and golfbags because those are associated with constant tourism and the people who bring those heavily patronize the airlines.

its not like ur poor anyway im sure ur mommy pays for your lift ticket, skis, boots, clothes, etc. etc. If u work hard to buy that 4 urself, props. But otherwise, dont hate because u have money 2 and im sure 100 would not ruin your "ghetto" lifestyle

while i commend you for your working for every cent of your trip (most kids do not), i'm guessing that you still had the luxury of putting away your entire paycheck to ski camp, and weren't concerned with paying for a place to live and things to eat.

skiing is an expensive sport, very, very few of us skiers can claim that we are not 'over-privileged'.

typically you get 2 free bags to check, that must be under 50 lbs, or you can substitute one of those bags for a ski bag & boot bag free -- with no weight restrictions.

Almost any adult person working for his money would not spend it on a North American summer camp. It just doesnt make sense. If you are responsible enough to handle a job, you can also handle traveling to NZ, South America or Europe and get far more and better summer skiing in for your money.

some airlines, like jetblue, charge you more if your bag is over a certain size. jet blue charges you the same fee for any bag over 50 lbs or 65 inches.

I just received a letter from _____ airline letting me know that my flight to Denver from london heathrow in October will be increased by £140 ($280ish) due to the increase in cost of Aviation fuel.

They will let me know if there are any further changes to my fare...

Seriously, what the fuck is that about? Is that even legal?

It was my understanding that they couldnt charge you extra after youve already booked the flight.  Oh and United is now only allowing 1 bag to be checked and then you pay extra for the others. Gotta love it.

first off....if you want to go to camp, get a job and stop complaining. not everyone who goes to camp get mommy and daddy to pay for it. i pay for camp myself, all of it and my plane ticket and all my spending money and my car and my credit card and my cell phone and anything else i want in life.

secondly, this is like the 10th thread on this...i know...i made one a week ago. some airlines are only charging $25 for an extra bag, which would be your ski bag, but they make you register and tell them you are bringing skis when you book your ticket...if you dont then you have to pay excess baggage fees. and for this year if you already booked your ticket, depending on the airline, it shouldn't matter, you should get to use old baggage rules. but everyone should def check it out.

there is no reason to be so negitive....you could have said...

hey for all you kids out there going to camp a heads up i heard that some airlines are starting to charge $100 to bring ski bags you might wanna check into it before you head to camp.

but no you had to be all negative....karma comes back to everyone.....real karma not ns/internet karma....try putting some good vibes out there instead of negative ones...you might be surprised at what you get back

anyone else might consider that the people on the plane add weight (and not just the luggage).

each passenger, plus their luggage , should get on a scale at the airport ; a 165-pound person who brings 90 pounds of checked or carry-on baggage would pay the same as 200-pound person who brings abroad 55 pounds worth. 

under their new system a 300+ pound person costs more fuel money but pays less ticket money than me and my ski bag.  genius.

Im sorry you guys need to stop complaining about your ticket prices because they will only go up. The price of oil is getting out of control and the airlines are doing everything they can to make money. They have cut employees pay like crazy. Most delta pilots had to return their whole 401k. So stop bitching about a flight from London to Denver costing a lot. Yes it is legal.

no, that is not legal.  that is like buying a tank of gas for your car and then the next week, you get a letter from the gas station saying, hello your purchase last week of of 10 gallons of gas, 35 dollars has been changed to 45 dollars. if you buy something, they can't change the price.

Fuel price increases have created billions of dollars worth of costs for all airlines - they are obviously going to cut costs somewhere, and they will be avoiding direct fare-based savings, So it makes sense to cut costs internally (staffing) and transfer costs to consumers in non-fare-based pricing through things such as addons and excesses

Would you prefer fares to increase by 15% or to cop a $25 fee for having a second bag (Which if everyone took an extra bag would limit aircraft capacity therefore increasing the cost per passenger to the airline anyway)

there are rumors, that several airlines dont charge anything for a bag considered a "golf set". i dont know how you do it with a ski bag, but i definitely know a guy that got his snowboard transported for free due to that.

australian airlines arent charging the transport of surfboards as well.

all this might only work if youre a nice guy that can talk to the right people in a right way.

so they won't charge for a 100 pound "surf bag" or "golf set" which adds lots of weight

but will charge for a 10 pound "second bag" which barely adds any weight

thats simply a stupid loophole that just fucks over the customer and really doesn't help the company, just gives special "breaks" to their friends.  reminds me of the US tax code for some reason.

im convinced everyone who wears a suit and tie everyday to work lacks common sense.

Are you serious?  I work 65hours a week, while studying for two qualifications in photgraphy and business, I only just survive over here and don't have that sort money to just throw away. i sold my Car because I couldn't afford to run it anymore... It isn't easy.

A single airfare to Denver for me was £629, that is $1260ish before adding $240 to the cost, that to me seems a little unreasonable.
I paid one price, then got told to pay a little more for my flight. the kid below you explains this well, apart from the fact that i have not flown yet, so in theory they can do this and if i don't pay, i don't fly!
How can you expect me not to complain?

I don't believe that the company in my example have cut any employees or are in any financial issues. Is Delta not a low budget airline? they thereofre rely on just meeting their expenses, making little profit on flight fares but making the bulk of their profit on excess baggage?
Over here (UK) 70% of the cost of fuel to the public is tax, so i think that the goverment are making more than enough out of me already.
They haven't increased wage rates to subsidise the increase in cost of everything in this country barr electricity and water...

Why should I stop complaining?

in order for you to really be able to say anything, you would have to be living on your own or paying for all your own food and utilities at your parents house. that being said, ever since i dont live at home anymore i havent gone to camp. haha. but i did move to utah so i get my fill of skiing in the winter, which conviently lasts from october to june :)
