I really think you should be asking other people about this. I realize NS is a great source for random info, but you should really talk to your guidance counselor or something. They can provide much more information dedicated to just you.

yeah its definitely a possibility if you have decent test scores as well. A lot of people don't realize how easy it is to transfer colleges. Say you didn't do that well in highschool, or maybe you dont have the money to go to a big university yet, so take classes at a local community college or public school, where i live university of cincinnati is super easy to get into and its still a good school. But anyway if you take classes at one of these local schools, its pretty easy to get decent grades, and then you can apply to transfer to different bigger universities. you're not gonna get the same crazy freshman experience that all your friends are gonna get, but when you transfer you'll get to experience it.

A good prep school will look better anyone can get a's at public school. Plus public schools suck so much you don't learn as much so if you stay at private school you'll probably do better when you actually get to college.

haha, i'd say with straight c's you should've maybe worked a little harder if you care about college. if you've made that decision there's no turning back so you'll get in somewhere just maybe not a great school, but i doubt you'll get rejected everywhere unless you apply to solid ivy's. take the SAT's until you get as high a score as possible, maybe invest in a tutor, and do out of school activities, they love community service

fuck that dude you're full of shit, if you live in a nice area the public schools hsould be better than any private school. I grew up in nice suburbs of cincinnati and my school district had AMAZING facilities, we had a better weight room than most colleges, so many resources, we had a fucking studio i could record shit at after school when the band wasnt using it. public schools get insane amounts of funding, it depends where you live so don't knock public schools.

anyone can get a's at public school? thats fucking ridiculous dude you think because we dont shell out 30 grand a year to go to school that our curriculum is a joke? you sound like a little preppy bitch you'd get knocked the fuck out in public school, because its just gangsters and hoodlums at public schools right?

you know what feels good? getting into the same universities as my friends that went to prep schools, see they had to pay around a hundred grand and have their daddy write a check to the dean to get accepted to their schools, i actually worked for my grades and got in where i wanted on my own.

Stay at the private school, and work hard not necessarily to get straight a's but just to improve on your current grades.  Honestly, the grade inflation that goes on at so many public schools and private schools is fucking ridiculous.   Plus, at a private school you will likely have a much better college counselor with more connections, which would likely pay off.

C average is pretty bad to be quite frank. Even with some luck on your side, a "good" college is a stretch. Even with a year to turn it around (and what a turnaround it would need to be), most universities are going to be reluctant to accept ya, unless you have some wicked outside credentials and/or test scores to fill the void; there's just a shitton of competition these days for decent schools.
And the private school thing probably doesn't have much to do with anything. If you're pulling C's (even if some feel grades are inflated, then you would probably be earning the same at a public school. Even at private school (brief first hand experience) work is relative and not that bad. Public schools can be quite rigorous. But that, of course, varies between what public/private school you're at. Either way, you'll be needed to step up your game at whatever school you're at, otherwise you'll need to explore other options, such as transferring in from community colleges or some shit.

thats completely false. i go to one of the best prep schools and sure i get a good education but you have to be at the top or really good at sports in order to get into sick colleges. so there're asians who have 96 averages and who are going to harvard but there're like 5 of them and everyone else has to compete with that. i'm hoping to get recruited for racing, it's not that i'm sick its just the program at my school sucks and if you can get to the top you have a lot of options. so it's the same, if you're the best you can go wherever you want but at a prep school it's harder to be the best. it's all about making the best of your education in terms of learning shit, and you have to do more than get good grades to be noticed by good schools.
perfect example, a kid from the local public school got into dartmouth because he's on top, he's got sick grades and does tons of extra curricular stuff, but a girl at my school with a 95 average, graduated cum laude (haha, cum loudly rofl) got flat out rejected from dartmouth and she had family connections. so it just shows that it's not the school but what you make of it, and maybe the overall rate of colleges people go to out of prep school is higher and better but you have just as much of a chance in public school also if you commit to it

You just sound like a complete asshole. I'm surrounded by multi million dollar houses and my school is in the top 25 for Cali public school and yes it is still not that good. I have plenty of friend that go to private not even really good ones and their teachers are all better they have older books and their classes aren't as nice but the education is so much better. My school has like 2 great weight rooms so the fuck what who cares are you their to get buff or learn.
Hey I don't know what its like in Cincinnati but I live in Long Beach and kids will get bused in from Compton and shiter areas so yeah I've been around gang banger every day. Hell last year I saw a guy get stab in the back with a screw driver in the middle of the quad. I've had one guy from one of my freshman classes years ago get shot to death in a driveby and he was just trying to stay out of trouble. So you'd probably shit your pants the first time a big black guy came up to you just to mess with you.
So what if you get into the same schools its likely that they will do better in college. Also I don't know what its like where you live so maybe your in a bad ass place for all I know but you fucking assumed way to much about me.

i assumed way to much about you???? you are the one making the generalization that public schools are worthless compared to paying ridiculous amounts of money for a private school, which is untrue, and since you were making generalizations i felt obliged to inform you of my generalizations of kids that go to private schools, so fuck yourself if you think you're going to say something like that and have no one respond to it. there is nothing wrong with paying for private school and if my parents had the extra cash to pay for it i probably would have went to one, but along with that there is nothing wrong with taking advantage of a free public education, if you're an intelligent enough person it shouldn't matter what kind of high school you go to, because no one gives a fuck where you went to high school once you start college.

and i wasn't bragging about our fucking weight room man, i was making the point that public schools receive mass GOVERNMENT FUNDING (depending on where you live obviously) and if your school has millions of dollars of resources you're going to do better in school. I say this because our rival private school like right down the street was a shitty building, they had no where near the course offerings that my school had, and they were paying 20 grand a year to attend it and it just seems stupid to me when you can go to the local district where we had more sports, more courses, more electives, more teachers, and crazy technology for free.

You have it straight about public vs. private. I went to a private school for my freshman and sophmore years and now its the summer of my sophmore year and I'm going back to public school. I went to an upper mid range prep school (Holderness School) and was an honors student. But to tell you the truth it was hardly any harder than public school. All prep school does is provide better athletics in some cases. Sure the best of the best public schools are great schools (example: St. Pauls, Phillips Exeter) but on average a prep school is a public with dorms. Alot of people are fed alot of bullshit about "the prep school experience" being so much better.

But dorms are fucking fun to live in, I'll give it that much.

Whatever from my expirence public school sucks compared to all the other private schools my friends went to. Where you are maybe public schools aren't as bad. But I was just giving my opinion on the situation and I still stick to it but its personal choice. I love the freedom of being in public school and the fact that I do no work and still get A's and B's for all my honors and AP but I if I went to any of the Private schools around me they have way better English, History and Math departments and I would ave had more of a challange.

Thats because your school gets all your funding from the taxes of the people in county. Private schools depend on donations to fund projects or funding from money of the school not tax payers.

As far as colleges looking at prep schools more, it is true. Just because you have better facilities that doesn't mean you curriculum is better also. Public schools or college prep schools teach you things you need to know or are going to learn in college, so they are already at an advantage. You also have to consider the classes you are taking whether it be honors, AP, or regular.

I would say that you have a better chance getting b's and c's at a private prep school rather than a's at a public school.

ya college's really do take into account the school you are coming from a lot. C's in a well standing private is definitely still advantageous...its sometimes sad too say but the school you're coming from really does make a large difference.

Straight C's will get you somewhere, maybe not the best school, but honestly if your not going to an ivy league school, people don't care where you went. Except a few of the higher up normal colleges, but don't sweat it, throw some B's on there and you'll be gold

hmm.  Out here it's pretty much 3.0 or higher to get into a state school.  Anything less means community college til you shape up.

So if wherever you are is as competitive as California, then no.  You won't be getting in anywhere.  You should try putting in some effort.  Then you'll be able to pick the schools instead of having them pick you.  (i.e. you can pick the super competitive party schools rather than settling for 2nd rate commuters)

i went to a private school and got straight a's. then after a year, i transfered to a public school and it was way harder. i ended up getting mostly b's  with a few a's and c's. maybe you should just switch to lower level classes if you are taking honors classes.

i go to boarding school. i live in dorms. so its like a college more than a regular highschool. there are no classes below honors at my school. and next year i am forced to take ap calc because they dont have regs or honors.

oh yay the public vs private school debate.  For all you who say that public school is so easy, how come you arent going to Harvard or MIT or something like that.  Yes, you can get A's in public school pretty easily, IF you are smart.  I have gone to public school my whole life, and i think i go to a very good public school.  I value my education, tried to make the most of it, and it got me into a decent school.  I challenged myself with classes, took honors and AP, and i dont think that your private school classes would have been any harder for me.  As for the person who said that private schools have better teachers, where do you think those teachers come from?  A lot of them (in my knowledge at least) come from public schools.

but yeah i think that having decent grades at private school would get you into college easier, not necessarily that it should, but i think it will

I think the biggest questions is what do you expect to get out of college, and what programs are you interested in?

I'm in the arts, where grades aren't quite as important, however if you want to go into something like Science or something else "smart" then, yeah you're gonna be in for some trouble.



If you're not doing the best in high school, your best bet is to go to a community college, bust your ass getting your liberal arts credits done and get your grades up, THEN apply as a transfer student to colleges. Once you get a college GPA rolling, your H.S./SAT's/ACT's really pretty much don't matter. a 3.0 or 3.5 @ a comm. college will pretty much negate shitty grades in high school, at least in my personal experience.

But like others have said, you're gonna want to talk to a guidance counselor. Coming to NS for real academic advice is kind of like checking babies diapers....... sometimes you get lucky, but most of the time you end up covered in crap.

I got Cs and Bs in high school, mainly Cs.  I got into college, chico state.  I know a lot of people that are the  same.  I had high test scores, so that might have helped me, but I don't think it helped a whole lot cause I know a lot people who didnt get either that got in.

no dude you sound like an asshole, i see that you realized below, but public schools can be perfectly fine most of the time, and on some occasions there are bad ones as well. I went to public school my entire life, and now I go to a very good college. I must admit, there are like infinity kids here from exeter and andover, some of whom I can say for sure would not have gotten in out of public school. The education is probably slightly better, but you get out what you put in. The main thing is the ivy league schools and other top schools take in way more kids from private schools. One of my best freinds here at school went to public school in florida, was valedictorian of his class, had straight As, 14 ap classes, yes 14 with almost all 4s and 5s, yet still got rejected from most ivy league schools. This kid is smarter than 90% of all the private school kids here, yet because he went to public school hes unlucky. I think its a little bit of a scam, because the kids who can afford to go to the top of the line private schools are rich, so their money definitely helps them get into school
