RAILS ARENT SKIING! too many people only care about sliding a little plastic box instead of ripping pow and actually skiing. rail skiing is todays ballet skiing, its a fad that will wear off. unless you ski at a shitty mountain where the only good thing u have to hit is rails. ive seen too many people hiking rails on powder days and its gayyyy. rant rant rant. Dont get me wrong i like hitting rails in the park too, its just they are one little part of skiing and people make them the most important thing

Ya, and another thing... there is more fresh pow in a park than anywhere else around noon anyways.
at least here thats the way it is... Go screaming off a jump hump and pop over the knuckle and its like dropping cliffs, sorta... mini golf i suppose.
Food for thought.

nice try haha but there's no comparison to pow in a park to pow in the backcountry
thread creator:
I somewhat agree that rails aren't really sliding on snow, but they're still relatively fun. Urbans are a way for people to jib around the city when they're not on the mountain. It takes skill to be able to ski rails well, just like it does to hit jumps and ski backcountry. It is kind of annoying when all people do are rails and they say they're a good skier but hey, it's their deal and I won't be able to change the people so why try.

No, not even close... but not everyone can or should go out to the BC and just start skiing.
EVERYONE could hit up some lunch, then go get the last of the foofy shit thats just sitting in the park.

if its a powder, i completely agree that hitting park should be the last thing on your mind, but rails and rail jams are not ruining skiing at all. If you are bitching about rails i really don't think you can ski rails. why would you not want to progress and show that you can do other things then just go down a hill on show. I also think that ballet skiing, or skiing areobics is kinda cool, if you saw a video of somebody doing a flip over their poles onto a box or rail you wouldnt be able to say it was cool, anyway i think rails are here to stay,

I dont think that rails are a fad, i think there a good part of park skiing. But i dont think that they are all that special because theres not a lot more that we can do on them.. i mean rails on a snowboard are WAAAYY cooler than skis

i dont really get ur argument for a couple of reasons:
a.) isnt skiing about having fun, whatever that means (powder, park, racing, RAILS, etc.)
b.) u probably live non-east coast where the snow is alot more plentiful and therefore dont realize how important rails are some of these mountains
c.) what else are we suppose to do in the late spring, summer and fall
u my friend are killing skiing with your hate

im from the east coast, where these so called "powder days" and "jumps that are over 50 feet and not icy," are urban legends. so yeah when its a powder day in colorado i will be hitting up rails all day in pennslyvania

Why the fuck do you care if all someone wants to do is slide rails? Let them if they enjoy doing it.

skiers are killing skiing.
the reason that watching rail jams, people skiing park boxes, and even (and especially) urban parts in movies is boring as fuck is because skiers make them boring. for the sake of enjoyment and fulfilment in skiing please stop looking at park boxes and urban rails as though they are train tracks on which you can only do one thing on. if you see kids in the park or watch any recent movie and think that rails are boring because all you see is kids doing front switch ups to pretzel 270s and more of the same (at best) in pro urban segments, then you are right in doing so.
rails are the biggest untapped resource in skiing today. think about the potential that having to pieces of wood stuck to your feet on snow affords you, instead of looking upon rails with skier tunnel vision and saying that they are boring. you can change that yourself by skiing differently, it's really not that hard.

i didn't read anything in this at all, just the title..but i'd just like to say there aren't enough rail jams in skiing at all. look at how many ridiculously sick rail jams there are in snowboarding, where first gets like 10 grand, hell that's what you get for winning us open big air. ridiculous i say..

this man (or woman i am sorry for calling you this if you are woman) is very correct in his saying! skiers are not very good of making the rails nice to look at in the videos. it is always same thing with more spin and more do you say "pretzel" and is very fuck boring to see i will kill.

rails are no fad but i think but the whole pretzel dance is definatly getting played out. dont get me wrong, pretzels are great in moderation. but too many will give you salty gas and some nasty kidney stones. its like when doing as many switchups as humanly possible was the most badass thing to do.

we are freestyle skiers afterall, and rails have become a big part of the sport just like powder. But i do agree, on powder days you gotta get outta the park and go shred the untracked

its not a fad like acro ski kuz the mountains are all investing big money into these rails theyre not gonna leave, people arnt gonna stop hitting them and they wont be taken down so it cant be just a fad. you ski rails to accomplish a trick you have been trying for super long and your comited to, its the feeling of accomplishment like no other that you can get from skiing which is why people do it. they also said skateboarding was just a fad and look at it now:P

exactly what i was gonna say. then i saw your comment while reading the thread.
but yea i think people stated the correct shit on the first couple of posts. if you want to go ski pow as much as yuo can sweet. whats wrong with rail jams, especially on the east coast. on pow days here i go ride pow the whole day almost. but thats the thing, we dont have many pow days, otherwise I take it to the park.
there are more than just one category of skiing man. do what you want. have fun. you can quote me on this, there will always be people who ski powder, always people who ski park. thats not going to change. so stop worrying about who is doing what. skiing is skiing. the point of it is to enoy what ever aspect of it you want, not change everyone to do only one aspect of the sport. there arent threads on here saying, "powder skiing is killing the sport" and saying rail jams are the only real skiing these days so stop skiing powder and get ur ass in the park.
yea.

rails are sweet for sure but these crazy summer rail jams are just depressing. There always a let down mostly because I like to ride away from thing I land, its half the fun. Other than that they just dont fulfill your skiing needs at all, there just a tease for actual snow.
I love watching them tho!

skiing is doing what ever you want to do when you have skis on your feet. you can ski down concrete stairs, you can ski off a roof, you can ski on rails, you can ski through pow. as long as you are having fun and doing something you want to do on skis, it doesn't matter. everyone gets to do what they want to do when they want to do it, and that is what makes this sport so unique. there are no regulations, so you get something that by its own self-expressive nature is extremely diverse and well rounded, and because that, grows more overall as a unified sport despite there being individual, specialized facets within the sport.

i think rail jams are mighty fun but i would ski pow any day over a nice rail but that doesnt mean rails are worthless they are still fun for some people and if someone would rather jib a rail then so be it they can do whatever they want its not gunna ruin skiing just because someone would rather hike a rail than ski pow so stop drinking the haterade

yes yes yes that is what they all say "who cares if you are having fun!"
i do care because i do not like to see gay shit happens in skating. and when every person here does something that i think is gay shit they spit out these words of "hello! this was fun! it does not matter that it looked the fuck stupid gay shit because it was lots of fun!"
i would like to see cool things that is new and exciting, and that i can not mock, in my opinion, because it is really excellent.
so the next time one of you thinks the words "who cares guys he was fun!" think about what you do for my heart in saying these.

rail jams are in no way ruining skiing. not this winter, but the one before that (06-07) i watched rails to riches at killington. it was absolutely insane. the setup was nothing out of the ordinary, high down rail, dub kink box, and down box. but there were such a variety tricks being thrown both ways at all times. to holson's blind up pretzles, to kish's sw 2 disaster, to some other kid doing all for 2's (rt, left, rt lip, left lip). i think that railjam's that turn into disaster fests are not as cool, and you could make an argument for that. but a skiing needs more railjams like rails to riches. if for no other reason than to appeal to the public and make the sport the grow.

every little thing adds to skiing my friend, if people have more fun on groomers hitting plastic, im sure by concentrating on these little things theyre actually progressing the sport: tricks learned on flat boxes can be brought to bigger shits etc... BASICALLY its way easier to get a sense of accomlishment on something that takes 5 seconds to hike opposed to 5 hours.
BUt you know whats really dope?? slashing the fuck out of the mountains and still being able to destroy a flat box with the best of them... its all skiing brah. do what you want.
