No Snow Oh No!!! Go Green

Ok so the chair lifts this season in most of Colorado had these like blurb's of info on how in less than a hundred years snow is going to be extinct because of global warming and that this generation of skiers might be the last to have a true epic season of skiing and such. So even though we will all be dead in a hundred years we should all go green so that future generations can ski.

Wow.  What an incredibly uninformative, redundant, and entirely unsupported statement.  I don't think anyone has ever said this before!  "OMGZ, I just saw on CU's school paper that the global temperature rises 10 degrees a day!!!!!!!!!!  OMGZ!!!!!!"

If anything in 100 years there will be more snow because global warming will create larger storms and more extreme lower or higher tempratures in different places. So maybe that resort wont have snow but somewhere else wil.

i do believe in global warming.......but in 100 years ill bet the snowfalll stays about the same.  The amount of snow out west obviously isnt declining each year since Hood broke its annual snowfall record this year

You realize that when there is speak of 'global warming', if it's to be intelligent, it speaks of the average temperature at earths poles?

No one gives a fuck if you say the average global temp has stayed the same-- it's to large a sample to notice any change. Pay attention to the poles and you'll find global warming.

I'd rather 'go green' and be wrong about global warming being true than do nothing and be wrong about global warming being false.  'Worst case scenario' going green is the smartest choice -- What does skepticism get you?

well when i hear, and read about "global warming"      "global refers to just that "GLOBAL" not one little area, but the whole fucking thing"


that being said, if you want to save the planet, go for it!  im not stopping you.  but dont you ever tell me i am killing mother earth by driving my gas guzzler, and keeping the heat in my house at 80 if i want to...


and "going green" (that phrase makes me want to puke)  is fine by me  as long as  it is industry leading the way, and not the government mandating it on me..   

but dont forget, we cant get fuel efficient cars because those bastards in the oil industry block them..

just because you find the significant increase of temperature at the poles dosn't mean it's not a global phenomenon, it's just that you wont' find significant figures pulling from the equator. it's like looking at the mean distribution, and ignoring the outliers.

It's the outliers you pay attention to, because they have the most impact on the whole. you could say no big deal the middle isn't changing that much, not significant -- but you'd be deceiving yourself.

say you put a meatball in the microwave, but you take it out too early, the outside is pretty warm, but if you were to bite into it, you'd get cold meatball center.  Looking at the average increase of temperature of the meatball as a whole might not indicate any significant warming, but you know that it is getting cooked.   Our situation is a little different -- the temperatures are backwards, we're dealing with the poles to the equator, not outside to a core, a meat ball is delicious and dirt isn't.... whatever, the example is still useful.

If the poles are heating up, the whole planet is heating up, you just don't know it if you're in the middle.


---  now on to  'you can save the planet, i'm all for that, but i don't have to change if i don't want to'  again give me your justification for this?  Say we prove beyond a doubt that gas guzzling and keeping your house at an excessive temperature difference (Heat or AC) are the sole contributors to global warming. How are you justified in continuing your actions? (it's obviously not the case but it is your logic)

If we find particular practices are damaging, you should no longer be free to practice this. DDT and CFC's are good examples of things people wanted to be able to do but were not allowed because of the damages it did to the rest of the environment.

You're not able to contain the damage you do to only yourself. You don't have the right to harm others in pursuit of your freedom. 


the biggest problem i see is your argument comes from maintaining luxuries, while the argument for 'going green' (yes i agree pretty shitty name -- give me another i'll use it) is based on maintaining basic needs.    Needs > Luxuries

The nice thing is, corporate america is realizing there is mad money to be made in green, so at least companies are getting the idea.

Even if they are in it for the skrilla, it still makes a difference. Even if all they do is change over to solar power, its a step in the right direction.

The biggest concern for the environment is the disposal of hazardous materials, we will get over Co2 emissions not even concerned about that. It's the removal of these insane man made substances that worries me.

Good thing is mad research is being done into proteins and bacterias that actually eat shit like nuclear waste and have perfectly natural bi products. Yes its real, look it up.

Even though I'm not sure global warming will have this crazy impact, I still help. I try to be as green as I can, anything can help the earth, and even if you don't think things will happen like the world will set on fire, it'll still make the air cleaner at least, or the oceans cleaner

even you if there are still skeptics abouth the truth over global warming what is the harm in helping the planet .......... plus being eco -friendly actually works out to be cheaper in the end ...... this is a point for the cheap ski bums that exist in immense numbers on this site

Like the town I live in and grew up in. It'll be underwater in 50 years or so if current trends keep up.

And did anyone read the article in Powder beginning of last year? It mentioned weather patterns ending snowfall in North America, but it said that in europe they will likely have colder, wetter winters, which obviously means crazy amounts of snow. They said that it would be a result of changing arctic currents.

And to clarify to the people ignorant enough to not acknowlege Climate Change/Global Warming, the term "Global Warming" was created over 20 years ago when we didn't really fully understand the situation. Like everyone is saying, climate change isn't just the world heating up, it is the global climate going haywire as a result of our abusive nature to the Earth.

There is really too much detail to get into for a duplicate thread, but there is enough info to convince people to respect the environment around, it's just laziness and procrastination that lets people think that "going green" is a bad thing.

Global climate change is a natural event brought on by the end of the ice age HOWEVER weve definitly sped it up.  going green hasnt killed anyone.  (except ethenol its retarded) but seriously it could have a huge impact on skiing, shorter seasons, less snow.  hell no. not cool.

the sun is going to have a 50% decrease in sunspots which NASA has reported, and they are directly related to the earth's tempearature and temperature cycles. The earth will most likely go into a cooling state, possibly another ice age or mini ice age. Theres tons of evidence for it. The sun plays a very large role in the climatic cycles of the earth.

well, it would be epic, but considering the mass famines and global temperature decreases and crop failures, I'd rather eat. Global warming would prob not kill as many people as an ice age(Unless it gets to be a hothouse earth, but on the other hand, go to snowball earth and were totally fucked too).

But, changes are expected very soon, some smart NASA person said this april, but im not sure. But it;s very soon, like within 10 years or so that we would start seeing cooler temperatures(not drastic) and in 50 years or so things could get real cold.

yes i do believe in global warming and think we should "Go Green". However i do not think that the blurb's on the chairlift were actually factual and was only using it as an example of what could possibly happen even though it is to far fetched for me to believe that snow could become extinct and i am sorry if there was any confusion about that. In fact Global warming may mess with different climate's of different area's that may cause it to snow more or not at all. Even though the theory of "Global Warming" is the politically correct term of what is happening because of human impact on the earth. Warming is not all that is happening and i have researched that in fact we may go into another ice age!

The car you drive, the heat you use, the food you eat, the skis you play on, and the life you live are all taking from an atmosphere through the use of fossil fuels, that is shared by the whole Earth.

Would you suggest that it is justified that you should have these things and abilities when you are polluting  a common resource? I am as guilty as any other, but the truth must be faced.

you really think in one hundred years all the snowfall will stay exactly the same? Dude are you kidding me? Hood broke a record because it was an exceptional year with la nina. There are years that have high snow fall and low snowfall. but if you look at the overall picture, it doesnt even out. the average snowfall is gradually going down.

you are a dumbass . the bigger the snow flakes equals the higher the temps. if you were smart in your little persuasive statement you wouldnt have said that. but that doesnt matter. maybe aspen/snowmass could actually be trying to help the environment? maybe a healthier environment means more snow, which means more business? If other ski resorts started this also a big difference could be made in the environment

I don't buy into this who "humans are causing global warming" panic going around.  The earth has been gradually warming since the daya the ice age ended.  But now we blame it on greenhouse gases and human's "carbon footprint".  I just find it hard to believe that humans can have such a drastic impact on earth climate.  There's a really good book that illustrates a lot of these points called "Climate Confusion: How Global Warming Hysteria Leads to Bad Science, Pandering Politicians and Misguided Policies that Hurt the Poor" by Roy Spencer.  Global Warming is a huge marketing gimic, think about all the "Green" products out there and hybrid cars.  Cow farts produce more CO2 then anything, show should we get rid of them.  And did you know walking to work would produce more CO2 then driving, the food production that would be required to replace the calories you burn off is 3 times what your vehicle would produce.  I laughed at Schwarzenegger saying we're gona reduce California's greenhouse gases by 10%, well, California produces 1/10 of 1 percent of the worlds greenhouse gases and would have little or no impact.........again, a political gimic designed to get votes.  Now I'm not saying go out an pollute all you want.  The smog has a bad effect on the air quality.  I'm just saying, don't believe all this global warming be caused by humans hype that's being shoved down our throat.
