143 million pounds? Now that’s a lot of beef! US citizens were astonished when they found out the US department of agriculture recalled 143 million pounds of frozen beef. The recall dates back to around February 1st 2006. “The great majority†of the meat has probably already been consumed said Dick Raymond the undersecretary of agriculture for food safety. The Humane society of the United States accused Westland/Hallmark plant in Chino, California of mistreating downed cows.
This was discovered after a disturbing video was released showing people kicking, jabbing, ramming the cows with a forklift and shooting high intensity water up their noses in attempts to right the downed cows. Federal inspectors halted operations at the plant in early February 2008 after finding "clear violations" of USDA regulations.
These video clips are too disturbing to play on public television, so in your best interest we will not be showing them.
The bulk of this beef was headed towards school lunch programs and other federal nutrition programs since October 2006. Doesn’t make you think too much of the average school patty anymore now does it?
On a better note, California prosecutors announced in February animal cruelty charges against two former employees of the plant. Since then, swift action has been taken to ensure all employees follow the humane handling policies and procedures.
