I'm going to Glacier this Saturday. Who's coming with?

I'm planning to try to hike into Sperry Chalet from Lake McDonald lodge on Saturday. My grandparents flew over the park the other day and said it looked like there was tons of snow up there.

I'm going to be working there this summer, so I'd like to get an idea for the terrain and topography. And of course, do some skiing. I'd like to leave the lodge at 8:30 or so. We will be doing a bit of hiking on dry ground at the beginning, and it is something like 6.5 miles in on the trail (probably less as I'll just go straight up where the switchbacks would be).

If you are interested, let me know. Make sure you have avie gear, as I have no clue to the stability back there. If it looks sketch, I'm turning around.

you skinning up there dave? thats a long ways back... going up to mt brown might be more fun... maybe? well anyhow... im heading of to new zealand on the 31st so id like to go out b4 i leave... you working now dave?

Nope, just finishing up school. Writing essays right now, as a matter of fact.

I'll be home Friday. And I know it will be a long walk, but I don't care.

Based on some intel I received about snow levels being at 5000 ft, I'm a bit worried it will be very sketchy back there.

And unfortunately, I'm not going due to possibly really sketchy snow conditions as well as there is no safe zone in the valley to stay away from runout.

I don't like avalanches.

I can't say anything for your part of the state, but going by my observations from skiing the other day I'm not going out again anytime soon.  Skiing Bridger thursday it became pretty clear that the older snow was relatively solid now, but the new stuff that just came down hasn't had a good chance to bond yet.  At the time I went up there had not been a freeze yet, so it was just a super heavy 8" layer of snow on top of corn--with basically a layer of water in between.  I triggered one slide on a 32ish degree slope, and although it was moving pretty slowly I'd rather not be out when that's happening.  Wet slides can tear you apart.  I'm waiting for more warm weather to settle things out, then I'll be doing some more skiing (probably around Lookout Pass if anyone is interested).

My mom is camping up by St Mary and she called me today and said the mountains around have lots of snow and it was snowing hard and accumulating at a rate of about an inch an hour. They also saw a baby black bear in a tree and got some pics.

hahah i want to go up there when the pass opens... its not open yet is it? Cuz that will be some rad skiing, we could jib baby black bear too..

The pass won't be open for a while, they got two feet at Logan pass, and that will only slow them down.

The Flathead river basin is at 198% of normal snowpack right now. WOW.

showdown handrail invasion this weekend?? Pat said they got two feet of snow on top of the somewhat solid base and people were skiing it today.

hmmm okay you talked me into it.... but there is one thing... im a pussy when it comes to handrails... but i will sacrafice my body, the worst that could happen is i get hurt and miss work.. oh well..

i was riding my road bike up from west glacier as far as you can go... and i come some little slides, but no giant avalanches... i would test the snow before you go.

Check % of last year...upper yellowstone is 155% of average and 496% of last year as of june 1 (so minus the last 2 big storms)
