Microsoft Access

try micrsoft office online  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/training/HA102262291033.aspx.  it might have somthing in there.  my company ended up sending me to a $500, 2 day course and I still don't quite know how to work it, i can do some extreme basics but that is about it...great tool if you know everything about it though

It appears to be set up similar to Excel but what the hell is with the programing aspect?

yea it is similar to excel in the fact that access is a database and excel can be used like a database but with access it allows you to add in the programming as you would if you had macros in excel.  access is also helpful if the data you are working with exceed 65536 rows (which I run into on a daily basis at my job) also I have to run numerious vlookups and pivot tables so with access it combinds all of those steps so you just have to import the raw data and then simply write a query.  I need to learn it extremely bad and I have begun working in it.  Once I master it i will hit you back if you have any questions

Yeah the tables I have to work with are anywhere from 400 000 rows to over 6 million rows. Fucking crazy!

Could you briefly explain what you know about the Modules section? I see that you can write code into it but what kind of language does it use? What as an example of the purpose of the code? Is it a more complex way of querying the data (more advanced calculations)?

The design view is where you set up the database, and the database view is where you enter the information, pretty much all i know

The language that you use in there is Visual Basic,  This is what my access book says a module is:

"Modules provide a more discrete flow of actions and allow you to trap erros - something you can't do with macros.  Modules can be stand-alone objects containing function that can be called from anywhere in you application, or they can be directly associated with a form or a report to respond to events on the associated form or report."


so it sounds like modules are a form of a query but it is a little more advanced but I wouldn't say it is a way for more advanced calculations.  To me it seems like a way you almost check you work.  I have never worked with them so this is all I can help you out with...


I picked up a book called Microsoft Office Access 2003: Inside and out.  It is put out by Microsoft and is writen by John Viescas.  It has been very helpful for me with helping me understand things that my teacher didn't explain to well.  I would recommend picking it up but it is $50 though
