Final Cut Express - AVCHD question

So I had a 4 gig memory stick from a Sony CX7 camera (records in AVCHD) and I'm logging it into FCE and after the first three clips (of 250) its already taken up 2.5 gigs. Is this format really that compressed on the card and does final cut have to completely uncompress it or what?
I saved the project to an external hard drive but still when I start the logging it saves the files to my computer. How can I get these to go to the external? I definitely don't have enough space on my comps hdd to import all these files..
ANY help would be great. I'm completely knew to the HD and FC world.

I had the same problem as you, clips were huge and were being downloaded directly to my computer and not to the hard drive. You need to move a folder called "final cut express documents" from you onto your external hard drive (use finder to locate it and then click and drag the entire folder onto your external hard drive. You will need to delete the folder and its contents off of your computers harddrive after you move them so make sure it worked before you delete it). When you open your project in final cut again it will say that your media is offline, and you need to recconnect it. Then locate the final cut express documents folder on the external hard drive and the files will reconnect themselves from the new location.
Pm me if you need any more help!
