Newschoolers in japan, 2009

Yo, I'm tentatively going to be spending most of the season in Japan in 2009. I'll be spending time in Sapporo/Hokkaido and time in Hakuba as well. I'm not sure how my time will break down yet, but I'll be around.

Where are you headed?

im planning on flying into sapporo then going where the wind takes me, but def. in hokkaido.  maybe hosteling/couch surfing.  do you have ur living shit figured out?

Nah, not yet. I'm headed to the arctic to work on a science vessel (and hunt jaguar sharks) in about a month. When I get back in late October, some friends and I are going to move to Beijing and get an apartment for a month or two and do a bit of traveling through China and dip into India for a few weeks. When the winter is going, I'm going to hop over to Japan. I'll probably go to Tokyo and make my decision around that time. I'll either go to Sapporo to visit a friend and then off to Niseko or I'll go to Hakuba and schralp there.

I don't know if you'll have a lot of luck couch surfing. I'm going to look into getting an apartment for a month or two in the Niseko area but I have no idea on the dates yet.

Oh, also what I think I might do is get an apartment in Tokyo and a season's pass at Naeba. Naeba is about two hours from Tokyo via shinkansen (bullet train) and an express bus. Naeba has one of the best parks in Japan and there is good free riding at another hill connected by gondola. The snow is not as good as Hokkaido but it's still really good from what I have read and heard.

I love cities and enjoyed Tokyo when I was there. Living in a city and being able to ski whenever I want is perfect for me. It's also easier to get a part-time job in Tokyo. Unfortunately, rail travel is pretty damn expensive and I don't know if it would be worth commuting everytime I want to go skiing. You can get a rail pass which is good for 7/14/21 days but they are pretty damn expensive. But for ~Y57,000 you have unlimited travel in the country for 21 days. Not bad if you want to check out other resorts or just see the country. I'd still go to Nesiko for a few weeks if I lived in Tokyo.

I'm just applying for ski instructing jobs now, I'm probably going to be in Niseko, but I am also really liking the look of Hakuba.

I'm going because I didn't get my visa for the states this year, so was pissed to start with, but I'm actually getting stoked on it right now, the snow looks absolutly insane.

Well, I'm coming over. I booked a ticket to Seoul and will be living and working during the fall. I'll dip over to Japan once the snow is down.

I am in Niseko from late Nov to the end of season, can't wait!! Just been watching all the ski movies with Japan in that I could find and am so stoked.

I'm heading to Hakuba on Dec. 22 - Jan. 3. I wish I was going up to Hokkaido, but I've got to save that trip for powder season. If anyone wants to ride message me and I'll give you my kaitai number so we can meet up.

I will be in Niseko, Hokkaido from 3rd to 8th Japan. Also planning on heading to Akita at some point and somewhere else on the 19th Dec. Also wondering if anybody is going to be heading to the FIS World Ski Champs in March? I should be there tagging along with the GB squad and it'll be cool to meet up with some fellow skiers at any of these times if people are around, as I don't know many skiers out here in Japan. If you want more info I'm sure I can get some as I know a couple of those dates are rather vague. If can't meet up then no worries, enjoy the winter!

im there in early february for a week, dont hav enough cash to stay any longer, but will probably need some people to show me around the backcountry and best spots.

im goin to be in Hokkaido for about 2 weeks frrom the 20th Jan. Me and a buddy are goin to a few of the renowned backcountry mountains around the island, spending 4 days just out of Niseko at Moiwa, then moving on the Furano for 8 days and hittin up Asahidake and a few others. On the hunt for the steepest deepest freshies Hokkaido has to offer pretty much. If any of you guys are into that hit me up, one more shovel and tranceiver in the crew be awsome!

alright boys i just found out i'll be stationed in yokota which is kinda southwest japan. ill be there til june and will def be lookin for people to ride with.

might sound like a dumb question. but r the transiever frequencies at the same standards over there?
