Surviving the breakdown of civilization

Me and my friends talk about this occassionally. What would you do or need to survive if society was no more? I used to think people who prepared for stuff like this were a little nuts but now that I think about it, a small investment of a couple hundred bucks is not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things. also, I already have a lot of this shit anyways
Here's what I'd make sure to have:
1. nice tent and sleeping bag
2. lots of lighters, lots of matches
3. a good cooking pot
4. a couple of bags of rice and a lot of salt
5. lots of multivitamins
6. a compass/mirror and a map of the U.S.
7. some seeds for berry bushes/corn and a hoe
8. a survival rifle with scope, and lots of .22 ammo
9. a good first aid kit and toothbrush
10. a slingshot for when I run out of ammo
11. a good bicycle
12. potassium iodide pills (only way to survive a nuclear attack, prevents radiation poisoning)
13. all my heavy winter clothing (parka, gloves, boots, thermals, etc)
what else would you take? what would you do? I'd prob head for the hills and try to avoid the initial looting, because that's your best chance of getting killed and I dont really need a plasma tv. after it dies down I'd check it out, but very carefully. I've heard in these situations some ill-prepared people get pretty hostile.

First thing I'd do is steal a big ass cube van and then rob a grocery store for non-perishables and lots of H20. .22 ammo is a solid choice for hunting or whatever but it'd probably be a decent idea to carry either a larger calibre rifle also or a sidearm in case someone gets in your grill, .22 isn't really a human stopper unless you get the person in the head...
I'd probably steal a bunch of cigarettes also because that'd probably be a steller bartering tool for food and goods, lots of addicted people out there!

First i would go back home on my sister's farm. We have pigs, cattle, chickens, and full gardens. SO pretty much set for that. We have a wood stove in the house for heat. LOTS of guns ( 12pump with slugs, .306, .22) Close to a lake for fishing. I know a few guys who can make their own bio diesel, so we have our own fuel from crops.
Plus we get our power from an electric damn right in the middle of town. Plus we are SO far north, any killing, or wars that would be going on would be pretty fucking far down. So i pretty much i would just hop into my truck, drive 10 hours north, and home i don't die from nuclear weapons and the such.

screw the .22.
get a scoped 30.06 for hunting and an m4 for defense. or maybe just a tank.

screw the .22.
get a scoped 30.06 for hunting, an m4 for defense, and a pistol for a last resort. make sure you have a lot of ammunition though cuz it would suck to run out.

I would try to avoid fighting if possible. while its true the .22 probably wouldn't cut it for self defense, I can't really afford anything else. also the survival rifle I'd buy is a shotgun/rifle combo.
I'd prob just get my friend in the marines to handle any fighting. if he had an assault rifle we'd be fine.
oh I left out a few crucial things:
hatchet
knife
fishing rod
weed seeds

Unfortunately KI only prevents you from getting radiation poisoning from radioactive Iodine. Chances are, the end of civilization will be caused by us and there will be such a huge nuclear fallout that no matter what you do you will be screwed...but trying to be prepared is always a good idea I guess.

For people bashing the .22, keep in mind that its the most common and readily available ammo you can get. It's also easier to carry more of it. It probably wouldn't hurt to also carry a gun with a larger caliber, as a 9mm or a .45 are generally a minimum for stopping people. But keeping a .22 is smart.

If we're talking serious end of government and law and order and shit, I'd just take over a fuckin' walmart. That store has everything you need to survive for years. Plus, easily barricadable and defensible entrances, guns and ammo, shitload of food, movies, tv's, generators, gas stations nearby, space for cars and everything else. This is supposing it's not a nuclear war that causes this, cause then everybody would just be fucked.
