Smoke photog question

so i was thinking of this wicked artsy shot of smoke curling up....so here's my question
when would be the best time of day to photograph smoke(in the summer), for some reason i think it would show up better at night time idk what do u think?

probably at night the flash from your camera would reflect in the smoke. just like falling snow.

i know one way you could do it is if u have a darker room in your house (used to do it in a basement room that had two small windows)...  and u make sure theres no other light on or coming into the room and you have to wait until the sun is shining through one of the windows... then close the blinds but open then so ur letting sun in between the blinds... then blow smoke through the sun rays that are coming through... if done properly u can get some really cool looking 3D smoke designs...

just do some backlighting shit with it.

for example   x = light , y= subject and smoke, and z is the camera.

x..y........z

rumour has it there is an edit with smoking in it floating around on the internet that you can get that idea from.

inside, controlled lighting, solid background. you can shine colored lights through the smoke too.

Lighting from underneath works well too, I had some buddies blow hits up through a lampshade and this is how it came out.

It's white smoke shot with a black background. he just shines colored light through it. the first one is inverted colors.

high ISO and wide open aperture with a fast shutter speed.

He doesn't use any photoshop effects. Only levels, normal photo correction stuff.
