Jackson Hole's Season

Does anyone know why they close so early? It seems like they could be open 100% for at least a few more weeks then only have the upper mountain open and shuttle skiers up and down with the gondola. There web cams make it look like they have great cover up high, there is even patchy snow around the base. Hell even Snow king has snow still. When the new tram opens they should leave the double chair in and you could ski Rendevous Bowl late in the season.

it's no longer high season for tourists, therefore they are losing money when locals with passes are the only ones skiing

yeah, but it seems like it could be plausible. snowbird and a basin do it but they are obviously closer to large population bases. I wonder if it could be supported by the local population and small amounts of tourists?

Bridger still has just about the best coverage they have ever had and they've been closed for almost a month now.  There just isn't money in late-season skiing, so go grab some AT gear and get it while nobody else is up there!

they are starting to build the tram so thats one thing. But yeah they got sooo much snow this year, but its melting real fast now though

ya but are they really going to be able to work on the upper mountain until the snow melts? from what i understand all they have done is pouring the concrete pads for the lift towers

well right after closing day they plowed a big ol road all the way to the top so they could start working up there, they did have tons of snow so it seemed silly that they closed, but that may have been they reason, there always is one

damn, thats pretty crazy. when i was there in early march there was so much snow on top that they had to close areas under the double chair because if some skied under the lift they would probably clip someones skis

oh yeah, i was there from the 20th of mar to the 4 of april and it was retarded how much snow there was, every day was powder day this season for them, haha

I've heard from many that the main reason they close is high insurance costs. Thank you American legal system and lawyers.

I thought it had something to do with the lease they have from the national forest service. They have to close in april no matter what.


But who fucking cares, go hike some good shit in the tetons. There's tons of stuff to ski.

nail on the head- pretty sure thats why almost all areas close when they do. that and something to do with insurance.
it is frustrating, though, looking out my window at this huge tantalizing, snow-covered mountain and not being able to shred. and at my mountain, they fine you (like 500 bucks!) if you are caught trespassing.
hence me going golfing today, i guess...

its not because of lawyers...  everyone is so freaked out by lawyers on this site.

as someone mentioned before, it's because of their agreement with the forest service... which has a mandatory closing date. my good friend who works at jackson mentioned that the date is heavily influenced by animal migration.

that would be sick. ride the tram up in the morning, and have a summer camp up on rendezvous bowl and run the east ridge double chair.

but the whole forest lease kinda screws that idea

ya that would be so dope if it happened. there would be tons of bc access as well. i rode the lift with some 40? year old local who said he has heard rumors this might actually happen but i dont know if he was just talking out of his ass or what

You can take skis up the tram in the summer to access the backcountry, but technically your not supposed ski inbounds. There's really no one to stop you though. The old park director wanted to do a summer camp in cody bowl, but the logistical side never panned out.

Its the same every year. They lease the mountain from grand teton national park, and the agreement is that they close somewhere around april first every year. but its so true they had over 600 inches this year (thats over 50 feet). they could have a fuckin sick summer camp in cody bowl. it makes me excited just thinking about it. and in like 2018 when you little cousin is going to CPC (Cody Peak Camp) you know who thought of/established it.

kind of a ridiculous post. i understand there's a general hate for lawyers in america but it's horribly unfounded. lawyer's are the reason why we have change in our country. white and black people would still be drinking out of separate drinking fountains, those in the criminal system wouldn't have someone to defend them or vice versa they wouldn't get a sentence they deserve, rich white men would be the only people who can vote and most importantly your parents would still be married. also, lawyers provide more pro bono service (free legal services to further change in our country and for those who cannot otherwise afford a lawyer) than any other professional group.

haha and a corrupt legal system? you need to check out any other country and see how well our system works compared to other countries. move to china and see what kind of justice you get.

sorry to rant... but lawyers don't just sue ski mountains to make money or to drive up insurance costs. they do it cuz someone got seriously fucked up because of someone else's mistake.... if a lawyer tries to bring a frivolous lawsuit they get disbarred (their license revoked). i'm not saying that our system is perfect or that every lawyer is a saint but if youre going to criticize the legal system you ought to do it in a more intelligent manner than you did.

Thanks for bringing up examples of good things lawyers have done. I realize their not all bad. In fact I know some great lawyers. I know some real scum bag lawyers to. Oh and please leave my parents out of this debate. My ski area used to have an amazing park until some kid broke his neck and sued and won. The wreck was completely his fault to. The insurance costs went up for my mountain and we have a shitty park now. That isn't my main reason I hate lawyers. To make a long story short, My dad was a pilot for an air medical service, he crashed and everyone on board died. A family of one of the nurses decided to sue the company he flew for. The company managed to weasel my mom into it as the estate holder for my dad. So we had to hire a lawyer to protect our estate so my dad's former company can't take it for compensation. Lawyers are real fucking great.

People in the US need to be more like Europeans and quit suing people for stupid fucking reasons, you know how much better our skiing would be here?

This year would have been a prime time to keep the mountain open no arguments there but think about last season by march the snow was absolute shit...slush everywhere with just a thin line u could take down the whole mountain so because of the varying conditions its usually a safe bet to be closed by april in case you have something like last year which would have just been a complete waste of cash to stay open for that long

It's because the people who own it are on contract with the national park and they are required to close that early. It's horrible because it's closed to the public but the ski patrol ride it out like another month. But it is always hikablse, except right now. Right now there is no snow.

Real question?.... It's amazing nothing compares. Except maybe Crested Butte. but still nothing compares. Check it out for sure. The BC is as good as the lift lines.

We had mountains around here close with upwards of 140" base. Baker had probably over 200" when that shit closed. They used to be open til 4th of July in the 70s my dad said. Depressing they close in April now and its a winter wonderland.
