Okay so I am trying to register for courses at the U of Calgary. I am going there for my Bachelor of Sciences and enrolled in the Biological Sciences program.
I've been sitting here making up a schedule that will work. Here are my courses:
Biology 233 - Lecture and Lab
Chemistry 201 - Lecture and Lab
Math 249 - Lecture, Lab, and Tutorial
Physics 211 - Lecture and Tutorial
Psycology 203 - Lecture and Tutorial
So I sat there and looked at the times that the website said these courses were offered (ex. Math, Tuesday and Thursday at 3:30-4:45 and Wednesday at 12:00-12:50 with the labs at other various times) and I arranged a schedule. I say schedule but I really can't call it that. What I suppose I could call it is a method with which to slowly (well maybe not that slowly) kill myself. Here goes, if your in a University science program, please read on, I'm gonna talk to my adviser but I can't until Monday and that is the day that I have to register for my courses. This schedule seems RIDICULOUS. I have a friend here now that is a doctor that says that this is simply too huge of a course load for anyone to take but I don't understand where I've gone wrong or what I don't understand.
Monday
Physics from 8:00-9:00
Physics tutorial from 11:00-1:00
Chem from 2:00-3:00
Bio from 4:00-5:00
Tuesday
Bio lab from 8:00-11:00
Math lab from 12:00-1:00
Math from 3:30-4:30
Psych from 5:00-6:30
Wednesday
Physics 8:00-9:00
Math from 12:00-1:00
Chem from 2:00-3:00
Bio from 4:00-5:00
Thursday
Chem lab from 9:30-12:30
Math 3:30-4:30
Psych from 5:00-6:30
Math tutorial from 8:00-9:00
Friday
Physics from 8:00-9:00
Chem from 2:00-3:00
Bio from 4:00-5:00
So fuck. Friday is my only decent day IMO. I'll barely have time to eat 2 meals a day with that schedule let alone study and do homework. I must be doing something wrong. Anyone want to tell me what? Please? KAAAAARRRRRRMMMMMMAAAAA+++++++++++++++++++++

i don't know how university courses work in canada, or medical programs for that matter, but you're taking like all lab classes. labs fuck you over and usually people don't take more than 2 a semester. are you a freshman (dunno maybe you said it, i forgot already)? that might make you have shittier timeslots than everyone else. i'm going to be a junior next year and i only have class tuesdays and thursdays. also, it depends on how tough of a school you're at. calagry, i have no idea the prestige involved in it, but if its like ivy leagues in the US, i know kids that go to some and they're always fucked for work and classes.
anyways, good luck to ya, shit sounds hard a fuck.

Those are all second year classes.. and this is your first year... as all ready stated.
You should be registering in 100 level classes.
Tutorial - A useless class that is "mandatory" to go to. Usually in math they are about an hour long and a TA just goes over examples on how to do stuff. Midterms and exams are usually held during the tutorial hour.
Lab - The is the practical part of the lecture class. Most are 3 to 4 hours long, but don't always take the full time. For a chem lab you'll be doing experiments, bio labs are generally pretty lame. You look at pictures, do simple experiments, fill out the lab manual, ect.
***Heads up on this information, I could be totally wrong since I don't know grade 12 course names***
Okay, I have no idea about U of C, but I'm sure its same as my university or any else in Canada. So I'll give you a hand. I'm assuming this is your first year and I looked at the Calendar details for a Biological Science Degree. The courses listed for this program are all second year courses and above that require prerequisites from first year courses, which you need to take..
- For example, in order to take Bio 233 you need to have a pre req of Bio 30 and Chem 30.
- Chem 201 requires a pre req of Chem 30, Math 30 or Math II, Math 31 is strongly recommended.
- Phys requires Math 30 and Physic 30.
So either these 030 level courses are grade 12 courses or courses that you need to take in the first year. This I'm not sure about, but you'll be able to let me know about this. Send me a message if you need a hand, I may be able to provide some help.. If these 030 courses are grade 12 courses then you have chosen the right classes; if not you've got to reconsider your classes...

Yo I'm going to U of C first year Health Sciences Program for Biomedical Sciences. Are you on Scholar's Advantage?
I did my course registration and timetabling on Monday. Your schedule is kinda messed brah, you have massive gaps in between courses, which will presumably make your day long and hellish.
I'm taking:
BIOL 231 Lecture + Lab
CHEM 201 Lecture + Lab
MATH 251 Lecture + Lab
MDSC 203 Lecture
PHYS 211 Lecture + Tutorial
quick questions bout u taking physics 211 and math 249, those are classes for people who don't have 70% or higher in Physics 30 and Pure Mathematics 30 and 60% or higher in Mathematics 31, that's the reason for the tutorials attached to that course. Otherwise, take PHYS 221 and MATH 251, then you don't have tutorial classes to attend.
my schedule is blocked that I have 10-30 minutes between each class, maybe a little more for lunch, only have to stay till 5pm on tuesdays and thursdays, MWF im gone by 12:50 or 2:50, oh and none of my classes start before 9am. If you can reduce the massive (1-2hr) gaps between classes you wont have to be at school till 9pm.
Have you done your scheduling for Winter Semester yet?
When in doubt, attend the spring orientation session or email your faculty advisor, they're super helpful and nice people.
BWAH that was a long ass post... hope I have been of help

The ones in Vancouver (UBC, SFU) start with 100's, then 200's...etc, so the first year -> 200's isn't the norm in Canada. At least on the west coast.
As for labs and whatnot, usually those are on alternate weeks
ie: week1 lab week2 tutorial / free time
week3 lab
...etc
so it's not as nightmarish as you think. but if it's different for Calgary, then I hope you sleep well, heh.

you just have a lot of breaks in between each class...which you will have to make the best of by studying and/or eating during them.
All times are Eastern (-5)
