Ok so mom said I had to do some research for which camcorder to get so I have narrowed it down to two option...
the first being the Canon hv20 http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=14869....
and the 2nd one being a JVC Everio GZ-MG330H http://camcorder.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028244&pathId=119&page=10...
sorry if the links don't work but any advice or suggestions on what to get or any other camera to get that are under 600 would be greatly appreciate and so would personal experiences with them..thanks guys!

Go with the HV20. Solid, and you can't go wrong with tape.
I've used my friend's MG-330, it's a hard drive cam, and it's built pretty flimsy. It's basically just some plastic covering the inner parts.
The HV20 blows pretty much every aspect of the MG330 out of the water, I don't know what you're even doing comparing it to the JVC MG330.

Does the HV20 use those tape things or does it use a harddrive?

tapes. i dont htink you can record onto the hard drive tho, but it does have a slot to put a memory card in for pictures and stuff

Tape. Hard drives are a pain in the ass when filming skiing. Not to mention tape has superior quality to hard drives/flash drives.
Under $500? Good luck finding something decent. You'll probably want to spend $600+ for a decent camera, but for $500 I'd take a look at the Panasonic GS300
