... if you feel its okay to download applications like Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premier. I dont personally develop for apple or adobe but if you torrent on mac or if you're an advocate of Safari/Webkit youre probably using something I worked on but (although alot of us do it for free and on our own time) no software dev is making it big. The only people who make substantial bank are the Web 2.0 startups. So If you guys are preaching how unethical it is to download ski movies, dont go saying 'hey can I get a serialz or [k] for this?'. Sorry its just been getting on my nerves and needed to rant this. Also im not saying its bad to download apps and shit, because most devs realize its gonna happen no matter what and theres no point in fighting it, but then why can't someone download Idea or something and if they like the movie then they buy it?
/rant
haha good times though.

I think the price difference plays a huge role it in.
Also when you buy a ski movie, you watch the whole thing start to finish and get your moneys worth. Sometimes kids just want to dl an application or software to mess around with, or use one or two simple features.

the ski movie market is much smaller than the potential market for software so it hurts the film makers more. i think it is wrong to download software, music, movies, etc.. but thats not to say that i dont do it. it is just so easy and tempting.

Being very active in the filesharing community myself, normally I would spout off about how downloading is merely contributing to the revolution of how we buy and consume media etc etc no more media bottlenecks blah blah, but with ski films they already are selling direct and I believe its a good thing to support something you feel so passionately about~

Kids can afford a $27 ski movie. $800 software is another story. Im not saying its right or wrong or anything, just an observation that its much easier for kids to buy ski movies than expensive programs they may not use much. Can I really afford autocad 2008. No. Do I NEED it for college. yes. that can pose a problem to poor college students.

No, you could afford it if you rearranged your priorities.

Are you serious? The price range? People here are dropping like 600$ on a pair of skis, 400$ on boots and then another 500$ on a ski outfit and another 700$ on a season pass and its out of their price range to buy a couple o hundred dollah app?
And also under your reasoning, if I only wish to watch Believe for Tanner's, and Seth's and maybe Callum's parts im not obliged to buy it then and its perfectly reasonable for me to download it?

The ski movie market isn't any less big or small than the want for people to have high performance software and you know it.

Gear is a different story entirely. A lot of the guys on this website won't make a full length movie. Sure, they might bust out a few edits and have fun with it, but I doubt they will really use final cut to its full potential. Not everyone is out to make some money off final cut, they just want to impress their friends and put an edit together. Gear on the other hand puts in major work. Every time you go out you depend on it, everyone here knows how much quality gear helps you when you are skiing. You can't really compare the two in this instance.
I also think the numbers you give on ski gear is a bit overblown other than the boots, but okay.

Yah this is because they are good at skiing and know the money spent will go to a good cause. On the other hand if someone has no idea what they are doing with video editing and just wanna mess around with Premiere or something than no duh they are gonna just DL it to try it out. I mean seriously would you spend 700$ on something you just wanna try out? I'll admit that I downloaded Premiere the other night just to try it out and I had no idea what I was doing but it's just fun to mess around.

I agree, they do spend a lot of money on ski stuff and other things but I think the reason they download the software for free is because they can. Its a lot harder to get skis for free/steal them than it is to download something.

I remember reading somewhere that even some people at Adobe dont care that much about it, Beacuse if i couldn't download the trial, use a crack or keygen. If I couldn't get it for free Would i buy it? No, I would go use GIMP or something else thats free. So im not a lost sale. They obviously care about people downloading it. but most of there revenue comes from buissnes buying thousands of licenses.
and the classic quote by Bill Gates
"Although about 3 million computers get sold every year in China,
people don't pay for the software. Someday they will, though," Gates
told an audience at the University of Washington. "And as long as
they're going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They'll get sort
of addicted, and then we'll somehow figure out how to collect sometime
in the next decade."

Would you rather support super rich corporate companies (i.e. Apple, ect.) or skiing companies?

Thats a new one to me, software is marketed for far more people than there are even skiers, let alone skiers who might buy ski movies.

I think the only difference is that people have a personal connection to skiing. Maybe somebody met Iberg at a premiere or something and they were like wow that guys cool we should pay for the DVD so he doesn't lose money on such a good product, but nobody cares if Mac or Adobe loses money on their product, because they figure a bunch of CEO's and software developers are rich anyway. Plus, its really rare that you get something worth a lot of money completely for free in the way that downloading software gets you expensive shit for free. It's really tempting for anyone.
