Is this a good camcorder?

The Samsung SC-DC164 DVD Camcorder.

Does it only burn onto the DVD's or is there a way I can put it on the computer to edit?

Basically give me the good and bads about this camcorder, let it all out.

dvd cameras are not good. end of story. look into MiniDV tapes

Eh. I'd say no to HDD as well... especially for something like skiing. HDD just isn't suited for bumps and thumps and stuff you get in skiing. And plus, a lot of HDD camcorders have 'drop detection' which shuts off the cam it thinks you're dropping it... which sucks for follow cams and such. Formats aren't always great (AVCHD???) or MPEG-II.

DVD will be a pain for editing with, not to mention... actually nevermind. Just don't go with a DVD camcorder, let alone Samsung.

Go for MiniDV or if you really must, a solid state (flash) camcorder

HDD will also not work at high elevations..i believe its 10,000 ft.

dvd cams burn to dvd, then import DVD then edit? DVDs arn't as cheap as Minidv (i think) and wayyyy bulkier. Seriously, the only cams worth looking at are minidv, unless you go Prosumer and get a flashbased real nice one

From what i have read, dvd's arent good for editing because

1) they are difficult to edit with
2) they are built more for the soccer mom and dad: by this i mean that they record what they want, pop it into the dvd player and bam, theres the video



just from reading reviews on cnet, and trust me i did my research when i just bought my new cam like a week ago, mini dv is what you want for editing.  the other guy did bring up a good report on hdd.  i previously had one and it was simple to get clips with but they may be a little bit more tempermental in cold weather.  (i had it say once too cold to record)  but this was in the middle of the night at almost 0 degree farenheight when i was out with the groomer and park crew.

although it may seem like a good camcorder and a good price,

save up the extra few bucks for a mini dv for editing purposes

HDD's are ok, some people love them/hate them.  just make sure to do some research before you buy the camcorder.
