wide angle does create some distortion, but not as extreme as a fish eye.

Fish eye = shaped lens that causes everything to spread out.
Wide angle = lens that creates something similar to a shorter focal length.
A really wide angle lens is just a different lens on a camera that has a shorter focal length than a normal one. But a real wide angle would cost alot of money and you'd have to have replaceable lenses like 16mm cameras do and higher priced cameras do. So technically every lens you buy and a attach to your camera is a fish eye.

Basically fish-eye lenses are not corrected for barrel distortions. So, for example, straight lines that don't pass through the optical centre of the lens end up appearing curved. Some extreme fish-eyes give a full circular image, some don't... I believe that is all dependent on the lens design. Wide-angles are "more or less fully corrected" as I most commonly hear people say haha (like the rectilinear ultra-wide angles such as the Canon 14 mm EOS EF L).
Fish-eye add-ons can be a cheaper alternative to getting the same effect, but I personally do not like them. They really bother me. But like I said, that's a personal preference. Also, use the search bar on here.. there are quite a few threads on fish-eyes vs. wide-angles where a lot of people give some good advice.
