I choose not to drink or smoke...

Smoking will never cause you to go blackout and yell at/hit people you care about. It will never cause a car accident. It will never make you forget what happened the day before (although sometimes it gets a little hazy haha). It will never make you lose control over yourself and your emotions. It will never become such a huge part of your life that you can't walk away from it if necessary. No drinking? Understandable. But smoking will bring you nothing but joy. If you choose not to, I'm not here to judge, just to tell you what's up.

yes, unfortunately drinking is considered a 'part' of the skiing lifestyle. I know a professional skier who i want to name so badly but wont who used to progress so much year to year it was crazy because he wasnt drinking, was focused, and wasnt hungover. Since he has started drinking he has lost sponsors because of missing competitions due to hangovers, partying incessantly, but more importantly has influenced kids into thinking that they need to party and drink... It's a shame. Think about it: have you ever said "I am so glad i drink, it is a positive thing in my life." I hope not. I myself drink, but responsibly, probably due to my age, so don't get me wrong- having some drinks is fine. Being a wasteoid is not.

Haha yes, but I have a broken jaw right now because of it. Its so easy to pick up hot drunk girls at parties.

i wrote this in the other alcohol thread too but i figured i'd leave it hear too.  it's about alcohol but it pretty much applies to smoking too.  they  may be fun but they really don't offer anything positive to this world.  my following rant was really long.  sorry.

alcohol is a waste of time.  it does more bad in our society BY FAR.  it's simple: the negatives outweigh the positives.  don't agree?

NEGATIVES
it's not good for your body
it leads to people doing stuff they'll regret
it leads to people doing stuff they won't remember - but everyone else will
it leads to more abusive homes/relationships
it's NEVER solved the problem that caused a person to turn to the bottle
it's addictive
it's costly to society
drunk drivers
deaths caused by drunk drivers
repeat drunk drivers
it leads to millions of "i was drunk" excuses for anything and everything
when i'm out camping or at a lake or anything how many of the cans/bottles are soda cans/bottles? ya the type of people that drink out there are the type that don't give a shit about this planet we live on and like to leave the evidence of the "good time" they had.  THERE ARE BEER CONTAINERS EVERYWHERE at lakes and camping areas.
more fun has been had on this planet sober than wasted

i love how nowadays party=alcohol.  ya so waste your time doing meaningless crap you won't remember.  there are simply better ways to chill out and relieve stress.  it didn't relieve anything.  take a nap you're just as unconscious of your troubles.  drinking just compounds it because then you're impaired and you are more likely to NOT do anything to help your troubles and make your troubles bigger.  whatever they may be.  as far as getting laid...sweet you took advantage of some girl.  congrats.

this is just my opinion.  it really sucks to see all the bad that comes from alcohol when if people were actually honest with themselves they'd most likely see that theres not really anything positive about alcohol.  answer these questions...

has alcohol EVER made anyone a better person?  on the flipside, has alcohol ever brought out the bad in someone and made them a worse person?  

when was the last time you heard someone say, "i'm so glad i drank alcohol, it really helped my life go so much better and i'm more successful and happy because of alcohol.  thank you alcohol."

again the flipside, how many lives have been ruined by DUI's, injuries and/or deaths caused by them,  unwise choices made while intoxicated (including embarrassing yourself, taking advantage of others, being taken advantage of, hurting others, hurting yourself, getting hurt, being hurt, wives that are beaten, CHILDREN THAT ARE BEATEN, and even those lives that were ruined by the addiction. 

why are there  so many people and so many in the limelight that seem  to have it all that are trying to rid their lives of this substance?  BECAUSE NO GOOD COMES FROM IT. 

anyway, that was a super super long rant and i didn't plan on it being that long but i guess i feel pretty strongly about it.  i don't drink and life is and has been plenty fun for me.

I drink a lot as a student in college, because its fun to go to parties and get trashed and everything.  I dont smoke too much, but its fun too.  I think that if anyone gives you shit about not drinking and smoking then it just shows you how immature they are, so dont listen to them.  I think it would be hard for me to get into drinking if I had an alcoholic in my family too, so I understand where you are coming from.            I respect you basically, lol....

i drink occasionally but i have no intentions of getting hooked on it....i was pretty bad this winter but i have gone 3 months without drinking and im feeling good about it.

3 months ago was january, which is basically the beginning of winter

I know, don't fear something that man has enjoyed since the beginning. Self-control and self-discipline.

so has killing, stealing, raping, etc.... im not comparing drinking to these, im just saying that just because its been around for ever doesnt always mean its good.

I have a lot of respect for people like yourself. Especially people like you who don't do either and still don't hate on the people that choose to smoke/drink.  I definiitely wouldn't fuck with drinking if I were you. I don't drink all that much myself because of my experiences with cancer as a kid but smoking (not ciggs) is amazing.  If you ever try it, make sure it is on your own accord and not someone else pressuring you into it like alex_g said.  smoking mary jane is something i think everyone should try at least once. it's not for everyone though.

man i didnt think this thread would be such a hit.... there is some really good debates about it. i just hate how drinking changes someone so fast... it sounds sad but i miss my dad... he never the same hes always mad at me for like not going to his fuckin house and when we do hes passed out on the couch so why the hell go ya kno... whaterr.... i just have no respect for the guy anymore and its sad it really hurts... but i just live my life and try to stay happy and not let him bug me to bad...

have you ever tried confronting him about his drinking problem? maybe telling him you refuse to go to his house until he sobers up? sorry if you already talked about that, i haven't read the whole thread.

If that was my dad I would get yoked and beat the shit out of him. Luckily I have crazy respect for my dad. 53 years old and we still surf double overhead waves together, its nuts.

I don't drink and I don't smoke.  It's a personal choice.  I'd rather live my life on my own accord.  I have plenty of friends that smoke dope, drink, and/or smoke cigarettes.  I don't care, good for them.  I used to think "Wow, what fucking morons, how could you _________ (smoke pot, cigarettes, drink) and be okay with it.  They must be addicted.  Now I realize that people do this shit b/c they want to.  Fine.  I'd estimate about 80% of the European population smokes, and thats fine.  Sure, they may be physically addicted, but it all comes down to the fact that people do these things because they want to.  Do what you want, but remember that the choices you make, whether sober or not, can affect you for the rest of your life.
