There were a few people walking around today with these shirts advocating the legalization of concealed firearms on college campuses. Just curious what everyone thinks about that?

I guess my main argument against firearms on campuses would be in regards to the nights when there's huge parties. It's well known that in university or college you're gonna get shit showed every once in a while, throwing a few arguments together along with concealed weapons could turn out quite badly.

People use guns to kill people, and having concealed guns at a party where there is mass drinking and raging insecure college frat dudes is just a terrible idea waiting to happen. Why the fuck would you need a gun on campus anyways other than if you like hunting? Even if you did like hunting, its differnet because you don't carry the gun around with you. One could argue about the VT shootings and stuff, but i think people getting killed by people wiht guns at parties would far out weigh this

Creeper frat guys will do anything to get in a girls pants, and if they had guns they would kill girl's boyfriends.  So that is just dangerous.  But on the flipside, we could kill all frat guys.....Wow you know what...that doesn't sound half bad.  Yay to concealed guns!!

thats an awful idea.  anyone who has fired a gun knows its not as easy as it looks.  but somehow, with all that adrenaline pumping and cold fear washing over you, you wont panic and have perfect aim...yeah right.  thats just what we need--firefights on campus.

and like everyone else said I have seen so many fights between drunken jackasses.  just last night, I saw a guy almost fight another guy for throwing a raisin at him, and they knew each other too.

Sheesh. We're not talking about colleges handing out guns at frat parties, we're talking about allowing people who have Conceal and Carry licenses to have concealed weapons on campus. You guys act like every drunk frat guy you've ever met has a Conceal and Carry license.

I agree.

As soon as i turn 21 i will get my CC license in OH, and NH. That lets me carry in most of the eastern states.

All of the mentioned scenarios do not occur on campus (proper) frat houses/parties/bars are not on the actual campus, so it is a moot point.

Its not like universities will be handing out pistols at orientation.  You have to apply for permits, take classes and submit to a background check to get a concealed weapon permit...and that doesn’t ensure they will issue you one.

it is a good idea but the problem is that when people go to parties things will most likely get out of control. however, think about if someone pulls a gun on someone and then in an instant everyone else pulls theirs on that person. usually someone wont do shit if their life is in danger but at parties its just not a good idea.

I'm glad to see all these replies.
Even though I doubt most of you are old enough to own a handgun or carry a concealed weapon, you're getting educated. The fact is that DCs handgun ban is extremely unconstitutional. And the "gun free zones" are just ridiculous. Criminals are the ones to worry about, law-abiding citizens with CC permits are the people that will put their own life on the line 9 times out of 10 to help someone else being mugged, taken hostage, etc.
If someone gets the permit, there is no reason they should not be able to walk on to a campus with their weapon. The ones who go through the training and get the permit and gun legally aren't the ones who go and cause mass damage, they are the ones who are trying to prevent it.

thats just not true. Where I go to school, the vast majority of partying is on campus, as are almost all the fraternities. Completely depends on the school. And even if it were true, do you think somebody would stop carrying a gun as soon as they left campus? No. They would take it with them to off campus parties as well

Your response does not make sense. "They would take it with them to off campus parties as well" 

Those individuals can already legally carry in that (off campus) situation... The question is whether that privilege should be extended to campuses, which is the exception.

Have you REALLY been to many parties where everybody has pulled out guns? And if you have seen this happen, did the people pointing guns have CCLs?

A conceal and carry license is not a license to kill. Nor is it even a license to have the gun in public view. These are still illegal.

no i have been to a party ever where anyone has pulled out a gun. but think about it for a second. if your life is in danger you are allowed to use all necessary force in self defense. if it was legal for these people to carry on campus and they had a firearm with them and a situation arose anywhere on campus where someone had a gun people would have a way to fight back against the attacker. do you really think if a person is gonna break a law by shooting someone they are gonna care if they aren't supposed to have a gun? let everyone carry that has a permit and these situations can be handled better IMO.

but my friend has told me about two parties at his school where people have.  bottom line: we dont need drunken college students carrying guns.  END OF STORY.

ive had a knife pulled on me at college, as well as brass knuckles.  you gun nuts can fuck off.  i support second amendment rights, but this is just ridiculous.




leave you fucking guns at home you nutjobs.  you have more of chance getting killed by lightning than a college shooting.

You act like it's your judgement call to make...and you act like you speak for a collective.
The "bottom line" if there is one, is that constitutionally, someone legally allowed to own and carry a concealed weapon should be able to, regardless of whether or not you think they should because they are or are not in college. I'm in college and don't drink, so you're making a generalization as well.
But why stop there, let's not have anyone who has ever been drunk allowed to own a firearm or carry concealed...or maybe only people older than 27 but younger than 34, with at least 14% native american indian blood, between 5'7" and 6'0" and less than 165lbs (if you're heavier than that you should be able to handle yourself without ever needing a weapon, right?)

Be realistic. The fact that someone is in college does not change a constitutional right.

And Klazo, I'm sorry about your friends. But let me ask you this:
Was the shooter a legit concealed carry permit holder? Was the gun purchased legally?
I don't know if you know the answers, but I'm betting no on at least one of those...like I said before, the fact is that those of us who are owning and carrying legally are not the people who shoot up house parties, etc.

The process for getting a CC permit decides who is responsible and who isn't. All of you guys who are making these kind of arguments don't understand that the state governments dont just hand out permits to anyone who wants them. The laws vary, but in most states you need to pass a firearms safety course, write a letter justifying your need for carrying a weapon, be fingerprinted and pass an extensive criminal screening before you can even think about carrying a gun around with you. Not everyone on campus is going to go through that, especially if they have no experience with handling firearms. The people who would be carrying are not going to shoot someone at a kegger. It just doesn't work that way. I'm all for allowing students that have CC permits to carry guns on campus. In fact, I probably would if i could. Anyone who wanted to shoot up a classroom would think twice if their classmates could be packing.

realistically, the odds of me having a multi-platinum album in my lifetime are higher than you preventing a college shooting with your gun.

also, your argument can go both ways.  should people be able to carry guns in high school?  I know you can't obtain a handgun at that age, but you can get a shotgun.  should highschoolers be able to keep shotguns in their trunks?

Well that certainly is a fun little statistic isn't it...I'd be interested to know where you retrieved that from.

This is getting slightly off-topic, but...
What we are discussing here is the Constitutional Right to keep and bear arms...and the fact that it is being taken away (DC ban is one example).
Now consider the other issue at hand, namely: Concealed Carry Permits...since it is impossible for a high-school student to obtain a CCP, this should be a non-issue, but since you went there...is it legal for a student (or anyone else) of legal age to have a firearm in the trunk, front console, rear seat, etc. of their car? State laws vary, but if the firearm is owned legally then I doubt it. Why then should it be a problem to park the car in any parking lot (school included) and have the firearm present?
Having a shotgun in your trunk doesn't change the chances of violence one way or the other.
Airline Pilots are now allowed to bring firearms aboard their craft in case of terrorism, what's to say that schools are safe from this threat? Maybe we should allow Teachers to arm themselves while in class.

None of that is very relevant though...the question here is: Should law-abiding citizens, who have been through extensive background checks, had handgun training, and passed a government exam to legally carry a concealed weapon for defense be allowed to do so on a college campus? The answer is yes, plain and simple.

One thing I don't quite understand is why you think having a shotgun in your trunk will not affect the chances of violence! Loading and pointing a weapon at someones head who's pissing you off is so much easier than using your god given knuckles, add a little booze, possibly some intense pressure and bam! you've got a recipe for sending a mother their kid in a body bag. You could have just beat the shit out of him or called the cops!

I could see teachers being armed though because it seems way more responsible then allowing a possible 100 kids to have guns on campus. If shit goes down, ie. some wackjob taking a gun to school, if there's a 100 kids with handguns someone is going to get accidentally capped by another confused student and it would make the polices job of identifying the shooter way harder.

If you can't tell I don't agree with having a concealed weapon out in public whatsoever, as far as i'm concerned your constitution is incredibly out of date and it could use a bit of revising.

prove that statistic wrong.  how often do you hear of a civilian using a gun to stop a shooting spree?  never seen it in my lifetime.  maybe you could be the first, but I doubt it.

and for the record, I think guns are fine as long as they are used for what they are intended.  a gun in a bad area makes sense.  college campuses are not ghettos.

And one other thing. Handguns would be what people carry round right? What's the purpose of handguns? To kill people or I geuss you could say 'self defense.' Like some other guy said, whaen have you heard a civilian shooting that bad guy? Hardly ever.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not against guns, I go hunting as well but I just see it unnessecary to have to carry one around

The funny thing is that I am a gun nut, I am rather obsessive towards shooting and carrying weapons BUT I am more aware of the dangerous potential they have in the wrong circumstances.

No matter how many times I try to justify carrying arms in public I come up with more reasons not to then reason to. In my life I'd like to keep it that way, my guns will not leave my hunting grounds because I often have poor judgment in shitty situations.

I have absolutely no problem with hunting, target shooting, or self defense.  if I lived in a bad area I would definitely get a gun.  but I just dont think guns are necessary in college, thats ridiculous

I don't think it's right to have a concealed weapon in any part of society but college and university are just a stewing pot of emotion, problems, stress, and copious amounts of drunkenness. This is all present in society but I like to believe that by the time you leave the education system you're a bit more level headed. Also in society you've got many different people of different ethnic and age groups to keep you in check. In university you're surrounded by people of a relatively same age with varying degrees of emotional instabilities that will probably level out later in life.
